Can anyone recall the worst version of a particular song that you have ever heard??

For example, there is a House version of Love wont let me wait by an act who calls themselves
"Dem Hoze"
There is also a version of the song by the Anita Kerr singers "elevator style" that makes a Kenny G record sound like Charlie Parker!!
There is a bad C&W version of Sideshow complete with a pedal steel guitar!!
There is also a Swedish version of Sideshow complete with the "barker intro" that sounds like it is playing backwards.

Now go ahead and you name some!!!!

I always respected Pat for his honest friendship with Ozzie Osborne. Not exactly two peas in a pod.

Hello everyone,

I bought the Lakeside LP just for that song. Oh well, to each's own. Anyway, I'll have to nominate Billy Idol's version of William Bell's "To Be A Lover". Yikes! The music was cool but Billy's singing, er, uh, never mind!

Peace!

Let's just say I hope there will be no further cover versions of "The Shoop shoop song (it's in his kiss) anytime soon. I love the Betty Everett original and it was painful to hear her song "retouched."

Hey Charmedes:
I guess I better not mention Cher's version of "The Shoop Shoop Song" from the movie "Mermaids".....:)

Anyway, here's my list.....

Rita Coolidge's versions of "Higher & Higher" and "The Way You Do The Things You Do" (sorry,
Rita - stick to "We're All Alone").

I have the Pat Boone CD of him doing big band versions of heavy metal songs - talk about tongue placed firmly into cheek!

Where was I.....oh yeah:

The Temptations' version of "Hey Jude" from "Puzzle People" - way too fast, guys!

Chicago remade their hit "25 or 6 to 4" in 1986 to a synth-pop/hip-hop beat - my "radio-only" pressing had a date with a brick wall, then the garbage can....

The entire Ethel Merman Disco Album...

Whoever recorded the disco version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in 1979 (I'm not even gonna bother researching the name - it's really bad...)

I hated the horrible version of "My Guy" by Sister Sledge(sorry Sister Sledge fans)..I did enjoy the "Greatest Dancer" song that they did.I always liked the Gladys Knight & the Pips version of "Grapevine" the best(although I like the others by Motown artists NOT the Creedence Clearwater Revival version.)

Top of pageBottom of page   By Reese (12.15.169.254) on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 - 02:46 pm:

Kev,
I think the disco version of BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER was done by Linda Clifford. I only remember hearing it once, but thinking it was a stupid idea to turn it into a disco song. But back then (1979 or 1980), it seems any song warranted a disco version. I even remember when Shirley Bassey did a disco version of her classic THIS IS MY LIFE.

One cover version I hate is the Supremes and Tempts' version of THE WEIGHT. First off, their version is almost a note for note ripoff of Aretha Franklin's version. Second, the Tempts do most of the song. Diana is absent for much of it.

Thank you, Reese. Linda redeemed herself in my eyes when she recorded "Runaway Love"!

I do remember the Supremes/Tempts version of "The Weight" and the Tempts do most of the work. That's why I stick with "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me."

Hi Kev,

Just so happens that I played on Linda Cliffors's album that included Bridge Over troubled Water.
It was produced by Gil Askey at Curtom Studios in Chicago.
The other musicians were Keni Burke, bass,
Dean gant, keys, Chester Thompson(genesis) drums, Ross Traut second guitar and Henry Gibson percussion.
The song, due to its length was recorded in three sections and edited together on the multi-track by engineer Roger Anfinsen.

I remember Gil standing in the middle of the studio, (after a few nips during that cold winter day)) music flying everywhere.

After that session, we literally had to dig our way out of the studio in order to walk down the street to get some food and drink!!

FYI, Runaway Love was on her previous album which I also played on.

Ever heard the Bing Crosby version of "Hey Jude"? YECCH! (and I love Bing Crosby, but this was too much for me)

Also, I have heard numerous polka versions of Buck Owens songs? What did poor ol' Buck ever do to those guys?

Best,

Mark
