Well, I'm not in the Detroit area; I actually live in South Carolina but this has been the first classic soul/r&b forum I've been able to find that seems to hit on my interests!

I'm pretty much a fanatic about any r&b from the 50s to the early 80s. I love classic reggae and classic jazz too.......but soul is number one for me. Glad to be aboard! I don't know too many folks as into this stuff as I am, so soul talking is welcome!

Favorite solo artists:
-Curtis Mayfield
-Marvin Gaye
-Bobby Womack

Favorite groups
- Isley Brothers
-Earth Wind & Fire
- Temptations
-Frankie Beverly & Maze

Welcome Galactus from a fellow South Carolinian. Are you a "Silver Age"(ie. 60's) Marvel Comics buff too? Whenever I hear Galactus I immediately think of the Fantastic Four and those iconic Jack Kirby drawings. Galactus was, I remember, this uber-villian who kept gobbling up universes and always seemed just on the verge of making a meal out of the Earth!

Yep, I'm the planet eater himself!!

Actually, I'm a cartoonist/graphic artist.....and a huge Jack Kirby fan. Since his work was such an inspiration to me and my career, I always use this handle on any internet board (sorta my lil' tribute).

Yep. Listening to soul music and reading old Marvel Comics......as Sam Cooke would say "That's Heaven To Me!!" ....lol.....

Galactus,

Welcome aboard to our little family!!
May the soulful force be with you!1

Top of pageBottom of page   By john dixon (205.188.209.109) on Thursday, July 24, 2003 - 07:21 pm:

Yeah, G-man, I was just the right age for those Marvel comics to be a major influence (early to late 60's) and there was a reason they called him King Kirby. His influence in his chosen arena surpasses any other. Maybe we can get you to draw us a Kirbysonian figure lettin' his backbone slip one time to some good ol' soul music!

I'm with you on the classic reggae too. For me, it's gotta be within the parameters of about 1966 to 1978. I prefer early, pre-Island Bob Marley, the stuff he did with Lee "Scratch" Perry. I also enjoy Perry's dub, instrumentals, and production efforts.

But, from South Carolina, you couldn't help but cut your soul teeth on the Tams, must have seen those guys over a dozen times. Then on to Motown, Chicago, New Orleans, Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Philly, pretty much in that order.

Welcome again Galactus, planet-eater, the people here certainly know their stuff and they never bludgeon you with their knowledge. I've learned alot and really gotten invaluable tips on music I needed to buy and books to read. Enjoy..

John:

You sound EXACTLY like me as far as tastes. Lee Perry is great.......I take it you've got that 3-CD "Arkology" set?? I wear that one out......The Heptones, Burning Spear, The Meditations, Bunny Wailer, Freddie McGregor, Gregory Isaacs, etc........if it's classic reggae I'm there. About the closest I get to dancehall is Cocoa Tea or Half Pint. But I dig the older stuff.....as well as rock steady like Alton Ellis.

A Kirby "soul' toon, eh? That could be done. Did you know Kirby once drew a love comic called "Soul Love" with all-black characters? It never saw print, but I've seen reproductions of the original art. Kirby wasn't exactly hip to the current lingo, but it's interesting anyway.

Stubass:

Yeah, Otis was great too. There were so many great ones......but if I had to pick three those I listed above would be the CDs I'd take to that desert island.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Looking forward to some soulful conversation.

Galactus,
An extended handshake and a warm welcome goes out to you... again welcome!

Since I've 'discovered' what 'soulfuldetroit' was really all about, hence... I've come to realize that right here, education is a basic progressive discovery of our own ignorance.

And a gentleman by the name of Ambroce Bierce had once made the statement that "education is that which discloses to the wise and disguises from the 'foolish' their lack of understanding."

I guess at my ripe 'ole age I just don't want to fall into that catergory now, since this site there is just so much you can really learn from, and some more besides.

It has just been a previledge to be 'educated' right here, every day, on "soulfuldetroit.com"... so yes, I think that is rather cool....

Top of pageBottom of page   By Galactus (207.144.253.114) on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 04:13 pm:

Well put, Jim. Well put. So few people share my enthusiasm for this genre (that I know personally, anyway), it's a true blessing to discover this talk board. I've met some folks here and there who are into it a bit......but not to the degree I am. You guys here sound so much like me, though,.....it's eerie (in a good way!!).

That's the amazing thing to me about classic soul, jazz and reggae. You said it best. It seems like the more I learn about it, the more I realize I NEED to learn about it. I can never get enough......because I truly, truly love this stuff.

And I guess that's how it should be.

Well,STU - To be honest I was going to say "Alistair Campbell" as that guy's the real Spinner par excellence.....you guys reading/hearing about him?
Tony's heart's probably in the right place but,to be honest, from being politically unassailable at the last election(due in no small measure to the Opposition having nothing better to offer) he's contrived to lose credibility and probably electability --- if George ain't careful he could follow Tony down that path,too......
This is DNN "Live in London"....

Top of pageBottom of page   By Des (81.152.238.59) on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 08:56 pm:

Hey STU / I'm sure you know there's a lot more to politics than foreign policy but Tony's forgotten that for some time now. It's as much to do with lack of delivery on commitments made 7 years ago as well as an increasing disdain for the political process born out of landslide victory(almost two landslides - the second being apathetic and not won on a wave of public enthusiasm) and he/New Labour are alienating themselves -- with their only saviour being an inept Conservative Opposition.
Tony's got time to turn it around, but it's going to be interesting to see how......maybe if those nice G.I's find a huge cache of dirty weaponry and I don't mean unwashed.......
