on my last trip to london, an electronics store had just received a batch of these gadgets and i managed to grab one ( without knowing too much about it ) before they all walked out of the store

you can fit 7,000 songs on one little box and i've started to record my cd collection onto it in preperation to my exile onto a desert island , it's going to be tough - last night i managed to get the temptations down to just 40 songs and will try to get marvin gaye done tonight....

anyone else going through a similar exercise ?

Not me personally, but a good friend of mine's doing that selfsame exercise....he ain't got many cd's and,of course, don't help on the vinyl front.
Quite a high profile item in UK,but strikes me uncomfortably in its additional de-personalisation of my music collection.....hey,I am an old fogey, after all !!!!!
I'm gonna do this exercise with cd-player-sized machine that provides @ 7000 hours of low-compression recordability and is Vinyl-friendly....costs around usd2500 now,but will drop and drop in the next year or so....I'm being kept advised on this machine by a hi-fi sales guy who installed my Linn Knekt system a few years ago and when he gets the smaller 3000hrs machine,I'm going to audition it.....phew,almost sounds like I know what I'm talking about, huh?

I see folks here in NYC with these devices - the sound quality is quite good but I don't think I have time to download 7000 hours of music!

Hey Kev/ Is that a "dig" or said with a smile on your fingers??
7000 hours is one hell of a lot of music,I agree.
In an ideal world I'd like every second of my 3500 vinyls,@800 cd's and a few hundred 12"rs on a machine that's flexible like a jukebox....what joy and digital home compilations for my car/parties etc
Once u leave an album/cd recording onto this machine u can revisit it and delete whatcha don't need(the i-pod will allow this,too)....7000 hrs gives yr collection room to grow, don't you think(smiling fingers)

I was playing with a pal's ipod over the weekend. It's amazing.

But it won't hold 7,000 HOURS of music...just 7,000 SONGS.

Still, that's a heck of a lot. And the fidelity is outstanding!

Save time digitising your vinyl by purchasing a 48-speed turntable, now available as an internal 5.5" SCSI format - listen to that baby spin! Cassette reader available soon!

PS - the I-Trip, which sends music from an Ipod unit to a domestic FM radio receiver - has just been declared illegal here in the UK.

I've got an Archos Jukebox .mp3 player with 200+ albums on it and it is not even half full yet. I must add that I could fit even more on there if I lowered the sound quality resolution.

I also have a seperate hard drive with over 6,000 (yep, six thousand) songs from the early fifties to late sixties on it, Doo-Wop, Pop,etc.
