Happy Birthday!! George Clinton 63 today.

In celebration of Clinton's 63rd birthday, Judy Adams on WDET ended her show with a great set of obscure Clinton material covering the entire 35+ years of his career. My question is, when will we ever see a re-issue of the original Parliments material from 66-67?

Hi!
Didn't Clinton kick off his career in the mid-50s with the first set of the Parliaments?
Anybody know, how to contact him SOON - so far, no luck!
Best regards
Heikki

publicimageltd:
The folks at Goldmine Soul Supply did reissue a Parliaments collection years ago called "Testify -in" (sp) which included their Golden World & Revilot releases.

"(I Wanna) Testify" is available on a compilation by MCA/Varese Sarabande produced by radio dj Dick Bartley. Here's the URL:
http://www.varesesarabande.com/details.asp?pid=302%2D066%2D186%2D2

Otherwise, it's up to the estate of Lebaron Taylor (owner of Revilot) and the gang at Universal Motown (Motown bought out Golden World in the 1960s) to put together a Parliaments collection and release it.

Kev;
Do you know whether the Goldmine cd is legit ?
I've had it for several years - it's the original Goldmine issue , titled "Parliaments Classics - I Wanna Testify" ( I've since seen another version with the infamous '67 Parliaments photo on the cover. This version has the '69 "Good Old Music" era photo - ALMOST counterculture - on the front)
Anyway, the back cover says 'liscensed exclusively to Goldmine/Soul Supply ' but I'm quite sure at least a few tracks are mastered from vinyl. Any Info?

Steve:
Goldmine is a do & don't - they do get permission to use some masters and they don't for others.

Any licensing credit line should read "licensed courtesy of (the owner of the master)." For example, if I were to license Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" from Motown Records, the credit line would read "P & C 1971 Motown Record Company. Licensed courtesy of Universal Motown Records & Universal Music Special Markets"

I'm curious to see who "licensed (the Parliaments) exclusively to Goldmine/Soul Supply". That line smells fishy to me....

Kev;
Re: that Parliaments cd - There's also a note on the back cover that says "American Recordings made by Groovesville Productions" ; kind of an odd turn of phrase , eh? However the liner notes thank Don and Will Davis ; also the Golden World tracks ( "Heart Trouble" and "That was My Girl" )don't appear on this release as they are 'not Groovesville productions'. However, those tracks are on the later release ; hmmm..........

Jim Vitti ... P-Funk engineer extraordinaire, whose mob contributions are well known by hardcore maggots ... I have a question for you.

How did you get a writing credit for "Much Thrust" from Bernie Worrell's All the Woo album?

I don't mean to be offensive or come across in a demeaning in way at all, as I assume that there are no royalties at stake. I'm just curious because the sound & credits seem to indicate its a Eddie Hazel & Billy Bass jam from around '77. Just trying to sneak a peak into the mind of Plainfield's most famous barber.

For those who might find the suggestion unfounded ... There's another Eddie Hazel / Billy Bass / Tiki Fulwood jam from '77 entitled "Field Manuevers", which was included on The Uncle Jam Wants You album where the writing credit went to Donna & Darryl Clinton, two of George's kids as a gift. I believe George gave the writing credit for another cut off the Uncle Jam album, the Junie Morrison & GC penned "(Not Just) Knee Deep" to another of his children (GC Jr) as a HS graduation present.

Not trying to start nothin', just curious because it sometimes looks like GC's paying debts, making gifts or returning favors with some of the song-writing credits.

Peace

On a related note to Rich's question, I know that sometimes songwriters list their children (especially their MINOR children) as writers to obfuscate the tax situation. Not that that's what's going on here; of course....

By the way, I see that the BMI site lists Phillipe Wynne as co-writer with George Clinton the 3rd on "Knee Deep". Someone could do a book with nothing but corrected P-Funk related writing and performing credits.

Rich:

During the creative process of recording a song, there are many ways for some one to contribute to that process. It just so happened that they liked some of my ideas,-- used them and gave me credit for them! In other words - I earned it! No one gave me anything!! Also - royalties were and still are at stake. On the Uncle Jam album - I have co-writers credits with George on the tune "foot soldiers", which I also earned.
There were many songs during that era, that I recieved credit for -- and many songs that I should have - but didn't - for whatever reason.
George didn't just give songs away!
As for the George Clinton/George Clinton Jr - Riddle - I suggest you check out the BMI web site and see what comes up under either name. You'll find that George's body of work will be under George Clinton Jr.!!
BTW - while your there - type in my name and see what you get.
I hope this helps clear things up a little for you.

Best regards, Jim

Jim I certainly appreciate the time and the answer. "Move it Move it Move it" Yeah, Foot Soldiers is another great cut. I'm sure I'm mistaken and have over-simplified, but I thought Armen had pretty much tied up all of GC/Funkadelic's royalties for himself. An incredibly valuable catalogue, but I didn't think that many of the people actually involved in the creative process (George included) got much of anything royalty-wise.

Happy Belated GC - a much appreciated body of work as well as keeping the bus on the road and twentys-some musicians gainfully employed.

I just wanna add I saw P-Funk last night and it was a great time! Unfortunately it was a short 90 minute set, being slotted into an outdoor stage at the Toronto Star Bluesfest. They're still my favourite active live band, nobody elese come close to them on one of their good nights and their off nights are still better than just about everyone else's shows... at 63 or whatever age he is, George still has more energy than guys performing who are a third of his age!
