Russell Thompkins co headlined a show last night here in Philly with The Dramatics who were the headliner. Let me just say Russell is back and he is kickin ass. He did 50 minutes plus and ran over to where he could not do "You Make Me Feel Brand New". He performed everything he has recorded with the Stylistics and his new single "Jealousy". The Emotions and Enchantment opened up and were good but every musician in Philadelphia who played with the Stylistics or with another Philly act that has toured or performed on the same bill as them was in attendance. Billy Paul was in attendance performed and impromtu rendition of Me and Mrs Jones with the Emotions Band. But Russell is back...Mr. Eli you missed this one.

Someone please refresh my memory. Somewhere I read that Russell left The Sylistics in the first place to pursue his education. I know he also hoped to do some solo recording. After his many years on the road, I can appreciate his wanting to go to school and be with the family. Was there more to the story that I missed? Glad he brought the house down at the concert. With talent like his, it's tough to imagine him NOT performing.

He took about 2 or 3 years off. He did pursue his education. He did leave the Stylistics and they replaced him with Eban Brown who has sung in other groups such as Wilbert Hart's grouping of the Delphonics and Eban was singing leads in that group.
But Russell made his solo debut in his hometown and rocked the house at The Robin Hood Dell East. I believe he is available for dates...

I found it interesting that the single was a Thom Bell/Linda Creed composition(originally recorded by Dionne Warwick). I hope he will be able to find comparable material to that in the future.

Russell does have a CD out and it is called Russell Thompkins Jr A Matter Of Style...The single is called Jealousy and he actually remade his own song in People Make The World Go Wrong.
