Here's a pic to make collectors choke!

This is Graham in Bob May's shop on 8 mile Road.

If only you could see what's behind Graham. Bob is seated on the left.

Well worth a visit.

It looks just like Bob Mays' other place did 20-25 years ago, on the other side of 8 Mile!

Looks pretty much like it did when I visited, do those stacks of 7" records get moved?

Hello All:

Yes they do get moved by me quite a bit. It would amaze you the things I have found in Bob's shop.
Since I have moved to Detroit (1998), Bob and I have gotten to know each other quite well. He actually gave me a book of poetry he has written over his lifetime. There are some poems written when he was a teenager.

I do love digging in his stacks and stacks of tunes. I have meet people from all over the world in that little hole in the wall shop of his.

I learned a lot about buying and selling used records just from hanging out at Bob's shop years ago.

I remember his earlier shop on 8 mile too, I think most used record stores have a certain funk...especially stores that sell 78s.
Cappy's place is another classic.

I'm really glad to know that he's still in business, and I'll definitely visit there next time I'm in Detroit. Now nearly everything ever recorded is available on CD, but when I discovered May's, in the '70s, it was literally like finding a source of lost treasure.

I've said it privately many times - now I want to say it on this site Bob Mays always treated me more than fair and I purchased 100's of records from him and I'm glad he's still doing ok. he believes records should be sold at a fair price not held for ranson like some dealers he would say I sold it for just a dollar but hell I only paid 2 cents for it so I still made good money. Bob was never afraid to sell a record' another store is always concered that he might sell a $50. dollar record for only $20 dollars by mistake and you'll tell everybody about it 'now Bob never cared about things like that. KEEP ON KEEPING ON BOB

Hello All:

I was in Bob's shop last week and he told me that the Detroit Free Pess is going to do an article on his shop.

Will let you know when it comes out.

The post about Bob are right on, he is truly a fair individual who is really a treasure from an other period. Most of the 45's he sells are for 40 cents a record. I have bought things there that I know other stores would have jumped on the internet and try to charge what Manship or GEMM think a record is worth. Bob has been so fair to me that when I occassionally buy records that I already own, I do have a large collection (been at it 30 years sometimes I forget! lol) I just bring them back and give them to him. I know I have made out in the past and will make out fairly in the future with him.

If ever any of you soulies from the isle come over to the Motor City you must check out his store!

Bob is one of a kind. This photo was taken around August 1999, but I'm sure it hasn't changed very much. I always visit him when I'm in Detroit - David and I went last time we were there and I bought a dozen 60's Motown LPs which Bob was selling for a dollar each. They were in VG + condition and they'd be over ten dollars on ebay - for sure.
Right on Bob!
Graham

I'm going to Vietnam next week and wonder if there are any 45s left from the US War days? Saigon here I come...

When I first met Bob back in 79 I spent three days in his shop and met Ollie McLaughlin, a guy calling himself "Lovegun" who said he'd worked for Big Top and someone from the Sunliners.
On the second afternoon Bob took me catfish fishing. By the time Bob's ride arrived he was "Merry" to say the least as he'd prob. drunk enough to kill most people.
On the way there the chicken livers we were using as bait came out of the container and being on the rancid side caused us all to heave and exit the car asap. Bob just threw up.
Once at the lake Bob tottered arond the bank for some time and then fell in.
I caught a fish and we had it for breakfast the next day.
Now that's what I call record collecting.
