"Prince!" LOL!

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=MISS70307121504&sql=B4ucyxdkbjolg

Seriously though - one day, will Prince be considered the greatest "Whatchamacallit", type singer by some of the younger set that's out there today? Let's remember, that some of these younsters have never truly been introduced to what we call the best musical era.

How should Prince be classified? Some have called him a genius and a brilliant Artist. Too bad I can't make his Artist sign. LOL!

Sam "The Heartstopping" Cooke.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ralph (209.240.198.62) on Sunday, July 13, 2003 - 07:22 pm:

Ya gotta give Prince his due. When he first came on the scene I thought he was a twerp. One day while expressing these views to Rare Earth's Pete Rivera he said " Oh no...listen to him " . So I did and I began to change my unfair opinion immediately.

I've stated on the initial "GREATEST SOUL SINGER" thread and I'll say it here one more time-- Sam Cooke.

Now the "GREATEST" group that ever defined the meaning of 'soul', well... that would be another question, wouldn't it?

But my here nod would have to go, first and foremost... with the IMPRESSIONS.

There is a little spill on all of the "SOUL" singers that were mentioned in the initial title thread and this one.

I have read up on every artist - and then some, and I'm tired now. For instance, if you click on one name - you'll find some artists not listed on the initial page of the link. I'll say.

Stu....
....I'm not saying Ben E King is IT. If you remember, I happen to agree with you. But, Ben's solo creer spanned 15 or 20 years, from the early '60's until the late '70's, producing hit after hit, and although I don't think he's Number 1 (Otis to me showed more musical range), Ben E King is worthy of serious consideration, and I would rank him above Brother Ray, and he would push Sam Cook VERY hard.

Top of pageBottom of page   By douglasm (68.113.13.31) on Monday, July 14, 2003 - 11:52 am:

Actually, no it doesn't get very difficult, a lot of it depends on what you the listener like. Remember, I'm the guy who defends Gary Lewis.
As to Marvin, I can't disagree with people who make that choice--openminded fellow, arn't I? He went through some terrific style changes over his career, and pulled them all off excellently. His atristic development over his career would be hard to match. But...
....the trouble with lists like this (and others) is that you could name 20 or 30 or more artists that would be worthy of nomination, all of them having valid points for being at the top of the list, as the posters have all shown. It makes discussions like this very informative, and a bit frustrating, because people bring up valid points that make me question my original choice. Maybe a top 10 would be more valid.

Having said that, I still stick with Otis Redding. It's not that I'm looking for a good car deal that I'm agreeing with you (well, maybe....), but I just like his style, and everything he sang brings me pleasure.

And check out the below wonderful sentence about Sam's stint w/the "Soul Stirrers."

"The first Soul Stirrers 78 to feature Cooke, "Jesus Gave Me Water," was a major hit, and with his good looks the young singer made an instant impact with female audiences, in the process becoming the gospel circuit's first sex symbol."

LOL! Lordy but - I can imagine.

I've got to purchase that Legend DVD. I just may go today. I believe they have clips of him singing gospel, and someone told me that it was said the ladies would shout and faint when he sang. (LOL) I would have loved to have seen him in person singing gospel. Just think, a gospel sex idol. :o)

He said "That's true." Lord - but did his voice sound fine and sweet saying them. He would have pulled me w/no problem. LOL! I do sound pityful I admit - but I loved his voice. And, I most certainly could see the Sista's in the church audience and choir pushing each other out of the way in order to get a clear shot and view of Sam "The Fine As Wine", Cooke. They were like - "We might be religious - but we ain't dead from the neck up or down." LOL!

NICE LIST IRVMILNE!!!...I WOULD THINK THAT IF YOU TOOK ALL THE CRITERIA TO DETERMINE THE "GREATEST" SOUL SINGER OF ALL TIME...ONLY JACKIE WILSON COULD POSSIBLY HAVE THE CREDENTIALS TO QUALIFY FOR A RUN AT THE TITLE!!!...KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE ARE AND WERE MANY GREAT SOUL SINGERS...BUT ONLY ONE CAN BE THE BEST...AND MUST STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD FOR ONE SIGNIFICANT REASON OR ANOTHER!!!...STUBASS

HEY IRV!!!...MY BEST GUESS IS THAT IT WOULD BE AS DIFICULT TO REACH A CONSENSUS ON THE "GREATEST SONGWRITER" AS IT HAS BEEN AGREEING ON THE "GREATEST SINGERS"...HOWEVER...IT COULD MAKE FOR SOME INTERESTING DISCUSSION!!!...MY SUGGESTION...SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE TOPIC MENU...AND FRAME YOUR TOPIC!!!...

You're welcome SisDetroit, and I miss Otis also. I figured STUBASS had already seen the site - after reading that Otis won the local talent show 15 straight times, as I remembered STU posting that fact. LOL!

I found all that I reviewed on the site truly touching, and I got teary eyed upon reading the article below. I find it fitting that Otis's statue was placed on a dock in Macon, GA. Boohoo.

I also find it touching that Otis's widow never remarried either. Bless her heart.

OTIS REDDING STATUE CAPTURES RIGHT 'VIBE'

LOCAL SCULPTORS HELP MACON PAY ITS R-E-S-P-E-C-TS

Gerald Ensley, DEMOCRAT SENIOR WRITER

Tallahassee Democrat (FL)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LAMONT --- Otis Redding is famous for sitting on the dock of the bay. Soon, he'll be immortal while sitting in the park by the river.

Two Jefferson County sculptors are nearing completion of a life-size bronze statue of Redding that will be placed in a park in Macon, Ga., which Redding considered his hometown. The park is at the foot of the Otis Redding Memorial Bridge, which spans the Ocmulgee River.

Redding, a legendary rhythm-and-blues singer, died in a plane crash Dec. 10, 1967, just three days after recording his most famous hit, "(Sitting On) The Dock Of The Bay."

The statue by the father-and-son team of Bradley Cooley and Bradley Cooley Jr. depicts Redding seated on the pilings of a dock, picking a guitar with his famous song's lyrics on a pad beside him. It will be unveiled to the public during a ceremony in August.

The $50,000 statue was commissioned by NewTown Macon, a public-private partnership established to revitalize downtown Macon. Redding's statue will be placed in Gateway Park, which is part of a seven-mile greenway under construction and close to several downtown attractions, including the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

Though Macon is famous for its music heritage, including Little Richard and the Allman Brothers, none of the artists was more notable than Redding, a singer-songwriter whose death at 26 cut short an already prolific career. Redding recorded 15 hit songs, including "Try A Little Tenderness," "These Arms of Mine" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long." In addition to "Dock of the Bay," Redding wrote Aretha Franklin's famous anthem "Respect" and many other songs.

"When people come looking for Otis Redding, there is nothing," said Conie Mac Darnell, president of NewTown Macon. "He was such an important artist who influenced so many other artists. The idea of (his statue) sitting on the dock, overlooking the Ocmulgee River, seemed like an idea that needed to happen."

Family of fans

The statue, which has been completed in its clay form but will be formed in bronze at a Colorado foundry, already has five ardent fans: Redding's widow and her four adult children. Zelma Redding continues to live on the 300-acre ranch north of Macon, "The Big O," left by her husband; three of her children still live in Macon, where Otis Redding's family moved when he was a child.

"It was a matter of (the Cooleys) catching a vibe, and I think they did," Zelma Redding said. "My family and I are so excited and so grateful. We think this is something that was well-deserved."

Redding and her children visited the Cooleys' studio in Lamont, 30 miles southeast of Tallahassee, on Friday. It was their second visit since the project began eight months ago, and the Cooleys have kept them apprised of progress with weekly e-mails.

The Cooleys studied hundreds of photos and watched videotapes of the singer-songwriter to create their clay model --- though they drew much inspiration from Redding's family. The statue's lips are modeled after those of the singer's oldest son, Dexter, 41. The statue's ears are modeled after those of his daughter Karla, 39. The hands holding a guitar are modeled after those of his youngest son, Otis III, 38.

Zelma Redding, who adopted another daughter, Demetria, 29, after the singer's death, chipped in with suggestions about her late husband's hairline and weight.

"What helped get us the job is that we like to get what the person looked like, and (the Reddings) had seen that in other pieces we've done," said Bradley Cooley Jr. "The trick is, well, there is no trick. You either capture the person or you don't."

Years of work

The Cooleys work in a sun-filled studio on the family's 130-acre estate outside Lamont in Jefferson County. Bradley and Linda Cooley, plus their daughter, Andria, 32, and son, Bradley Jr., 31, moved there in 1975 from Tampa and built a log cabin that the parents still occupy.

Bradley Cooley, an artist since childhood, was a tropical fish dealer who sculpted wildlife and Native American figures in his free time. He traveled to craft and museum shows to sell his artwork and eventually turned his sideline into a full-time job. His son, who was making intricate clay models by the time he was 5, joined his father's business in 1989.

The father and son specialize in figures of Native Americans of the southeastern United States. Tabletop pieces by the pair adorn homes, businesses and galleries from California to Massachusetts --- though Bradley Cooley said it took years to build a clientele.

"I tell parents that as soon as they see their child pick up a pencil or crayon and start drawing, they should pick up a ruler and rap their knuckles," Bradley Cooley said with a laugh. "An artist has to go through a lot of lean times before he becomes successful."

The Cooleys moved into heroic-size (1 1/2 to twice life-size) sculptures several years ago. They created six pieces for the Chateau Elan golf resort near Atlanta: bronze statues of golf legends Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead and Kathy Whitworth, as well as a woman dancing on grapes in the fountain at the resort's entrance. They did a bronze statue of golf legend Bobby Jones, which stands at his famed Augusta (Ga.) National golf course.

The Cooleys are currently working on a 14-foot-tall statue of legendary Seminole Chief Sam Jones surrounded by symbols of the eight Seminole clans Jones led to refuge in the Florida Everglades in the 19th century.

Jones, a spiritual leader who was born into the Miccosukee tribe near Tallahassee, is credited with saving the Seminoles from extermination in Florida. The statue was commissioned by the Seminole tribe, and it will be placed on a 60-foot mound at the tribe's Big Cypress Swamp Reservation in South Florida.

Yet the Cooleys acknowledge the Redding statue will "probably be seen by more of the public than anything we've done."

"It's an honor, really," Bradley Jr. said. "He wrote a lot of songs for other people, and his songs are still played constantly today. He was very influential."
