Hello All:

Fayette, you mentioned you remember some clubs from Atlanta. Which ones where they? I worked in Atlanta 1977/1979 for a while, Casbah, Krazz's, Backstreet, VIP. There was also some club out in Marrietta tha Dan Miller use to spin at?

I am originally from Boston so I remember spinning at The Surf, Friends, Yesterdays, Zeldas,Jacob Ladder(Jimmy Forneia), Mirage (Joey Carvello), Elephant Room, Lansdowne (Danae Jackavidis) and the other clubs I remember where the Other Side, 1270 (Jimmy Stewart), Rhinoceros (John TC Loungo)

Also did some guess spots in NYC, Limelight, Danceateria, Roseland Ball Room and I remember going to the Billboard conventions and going to a whole slew of clubs in NYC: Hippo, Funhouse, Gentlemans club, 54, Stringfellows, 12 west, garage plus to many just vaguely stuck in my mind some where.

Finally I spun for a while in Pittsburgh, 2001, VIP, Heaven, Happy Landing, BYM.

Does any one here know what the Detroit and Chicago scene was like then. I spun a little in Chicago put that was the 90's and I live in Detroit now.

Hello Bobby:

Yes Eddie B is a very good friend of mind. Eddie bing a little older than me and him being into the soul more than disco stuff, he would only come to the clubs now and then (no ride was tuff)

I talk with him and look for records, and buy records and talk the crap with him every now and then.

Great Soul Eddie is.

Soulaholic

He knows me as Brian H. from Revere

Hey Chef;
One of the times when I was at the Cheetah with Smitty(Manhattans), George Clinton and Parlament-Funkadelic were on the same bill. That was the first time I ever saw George Clinton in his get-up and he scared the ____ out of me (He-He-)! The start of a new era. I hated those strobe lights at the Cheetah, they were blinding!

Geez...being from the not-so-soulful city of Rochester NY there weren't many "hip clubs" around when I was growing up but here were some "hangouts" that did exist during the soul era:

The Pythodd Club (owned by the Fraternal Order of the Pythodd; mainly a jazz/blues club in a large converted house - Chuck Mangione "cut his teeth" playing there)

Tiny's Bengal Inn (located near Lake Ontario & Ontario Beach; R&B bands such as the Brass Buttons and Wilmer & the Dukes played there)

Club 2-On-2/Club 747 (aaahh...disco comes to the Flower City)

Rochester Community War Memorial Auditorium (James Brown played here several times during the 1960s & 70s; Parliament/Funkadelic showed up with the Mothership and the city wasn't the same since!).

That's all I can remember....for now...

hi, most of the clubs mentioned are obviously geared with live artist/group as the main entertainment, a big differance to the clubs in england, although there were clubs putting on acts it was nearly always as a special night, unless you lived in the big cities, maybe this is why us brits know so much about the record side of things as this was the only way of getting any information on the groups, scouring the label for any info as opposed to chatting with them at the bar before or after a gig as you seem to be implying is what happened. If i saw a group of any stature it would be at big theatre or hall where in reality you had little or no chance to speak to the artists, which is why it is fascinating reading your tales on the forum.
