I'm a new poster and constantly on the lookout for cd replacements of some of my vinyl from 1970 onwards. KevGo enlightened me on The System yesterday, now I'm throwing a coupla different Artists in the pot and wld be v.impressed if anybody can fill me in on their subsequent lives and if cd's are available.
Easy start - why hasn't Bill Withers' Sussex albums made the remaster roster(particularly +justments --- "make a smile for me" - gorgeous).
A guy called Frederick released one album(that I know of) in mid-80's on a small Chicago(?) label.
Coupla Track titles(paraphrased) "Callin'"(ends with his girl hanging up the phone on him) and "Feelings"(a duet with an unkown female vocalist).
Mataya Clifford : one album on RCA Victor called "Road of Life" - next to nothing on the Net about him.Wld love that album on cd (great tracks called "Morrison","Kings Road").
Hey,Kev - I read another thread u commented on Phoebe Snow w/Mike McDonald blasting a great version of "at last" -- u heard her doing that on the Donald Fagen-led 'new york rocknsoul revue"cd from early 90's??(with MikeMac on there, too).
Any light shed on the foregoing will be awesome....I gotta hit the sack (it's late here)...

Hi Des,
I realize that you must be living somewhere outside of here, the United States, the focal point being what you had stated in your initial opening thread (the last line) about "hitting the sack (it's getting late)."
Therefore, I became curious from what part of the globe you may be refering us to, with the time factor, that's all.
Anyway... as they say welcome again, matey!

I know I'm being a bit selfish here, but has nobody got anything on Frederick or Mataya Clifford? I've got both albums on Vinyl (gathering dust in the loft, unfortunately),but I'd love to find out if cd's ever appeared or what happened to either/both....Oh,and a happy 4th to everyone in the U.S of A.

Des are you referring to "Gentle (Calling Your Name)" by Frederick and the late Janice Dowlin from Cleveland, Ohio? If so the record was recorded in Cleveland and put out by Heat Records in Akron, Ohio. Or, is this another Frederick?
By Des (217.42.15.137) on Friday, July 04, 2003 - 05:47 pm: |
RD/ That's the one. Like I said above,I've had to store my Vinyl away(compromises of Fatherhood and new house move etc etc) -- it's been a while since I played or even thought about that album. This site is new to me and I'm enjoying the exchanges....great to find like-minds etc.
For sure this is the guy I'm thinking of -- RD/D'you have any further info on that Frederick and if that album ever made CD??? BTW,just the fact that u know the album makes me feel strangely happy - weird, huh?

Frederick's album never made it to CD and you're right it was his only LP. He put out a 12 inch record a few years later but most of them remain in his possession. "Gentle..." was a modest hit but Frederick never got any thing out of it; the whole thing (business wise) was really a big mess and was the cause for Heat Records going out of business. On my LP the two females he duetted with are identified. He worked at the VA Hospital in Cleveland when the record came out and continues to do so, unless he just recently retired. He was gigging on weekends with Eugene Ross' group (playing the conga) a few years back but I don't think he does now.

Des, "Gentle (Calling Your Name)" was released in 1995 on "Slow Jams: Timeless Volume 4". Check CD Connection (or German Music Express.) I believe they have the best search engine. Select "Search for any fields containing" and type whatever you are looking for. If they have it, it will appear.

Des, the single "Gentle..." has been issued on a couple of comps but I thought you were talking about the whole album.

BTW, I also liked "Games" off that Frederick LP.

Y'know I'm getting info on records I loved in the 70's and 80's that got zilch coverage in UK - This is great to discover. However, stories like u describe on Frederick are saddening.I would like to have a legacy of that one album if I were Frederick, but I hope he didn't get too emotionally or financially burnt by the experience.Although I always thought the production was a little murky, the songs (largely) were of a good quality and I also thought that with a little marketing,it would have found an audience beyond the cognoscenti (to which I gladly belonged in the 80's).Janice Dowlin couldn't have been particularly old and I'm almost loath to ask how she passed away - hopefully not another "tragedy"?

I forgot how Janice passed--people from East Cleveland will remember her as the girl who worked at Doll's Rapids Creations a popular record store in E. Cleveland--but it was from natural causes. She was a pretty, plus size lady at the time the record came out while Frederick stood about 5'6" and weigh 135lbs. IMO Janice made that record; I always loved her singing. "Gentle..." was played a few times on one of the popular daytime soaps (I can't remember which one). The guy who wrote "Gentle," Gerald Mims, is the brother of Terry Mims, a cruiserweight who fought some of the top light and heavyweight fighers, including Evander Holyfied, Dwight Qawi, Michael Dokes, Carl "the Truth" Williams and Randall "Tex" Cobb.

The Heat label was distributed by Montage records in Philly at the time.
Their other claim to fame was I need a Freak by Sexual Harrassment in 1983.

You're right Eli, I always forget about that record as being a Heat Recording, DJ Lynn Tolliver had a lot to do with that group. A long lawsuit between Heat and Time Traxx Productions, which TTP won ended Heat.
Heat always had Heat Records and Filmworks on their recordings but I don't know of any film they ever produced.
The Chicago Gangsters was also a product of Heat.
The funny thing about the Frederick recording is that it was produced by Time Traxx Productions in Cleveland and leased to Heat. Frederick never signed with Heat, he was with TT, but Janice signed with Heat. Frederick and Janice didn't tour together because of the conflict between TT and Heat. Each went on separate tours to promote "Gentle"; Frederick with Evelyn Wright and Janice with Johnston Brown.
"Gentle" was a demo that DJ Jeffrey Charles played on his For Lovers Only show one evening and got endless phone calls requesting to hear the record more and asking where it could be purchased. The same demo that Charles got from TT and played on his show is what was released.

Eli, one of your favorites, Snoop Doggy Dog sampled "I Need A Freak" in "Bring It On," which he produced on Suga Free and Kokane.

RD....
Is Lynn T. still on the air?
When Luther first covered Love wont let me wait, he fedexed an album and cd long before the official release date.
A true giant of radio.

Eli, when Radio One purchased WZAK (where Lynn Tolliver worked), WENZ and WERE in Cleveland, Tolliver was let go or fired. This, despite the fact that Tolliver and the station was aways in the Top 3 and often number one in the ratings. Tolliver was not only a jock but had become a part owner of WZAK.

That is just such a travesty!!
Tolliver was the consumate radio man and I do hope that he comes back.
Isnt his son on the air somewhere??

You're speaking of Dave Tolliver one half of Men At Large, he's Lynn's nephew.
Good question though as to whether he's still on the air. I don't know. Haven't heard his name in sometime, he revamped Men at Large when Jason Champion left with a guy name Gemini from Chicago. The pair's one CD on Rival Records in Lorain, Ohio did nothing.
