Here's my 2 cents worth on this topic:

We are talking Detroit here, and the year was 1965....
Ric-Tic's own J. J. Barnes almost sounded quite like Motown's very own Marvin Gaye.

Anyone ever noticed both of these R&B vocals and of their close similarities, in there?

Esther Phillips sounding like Dinah Washington on "What A Difference A Day Makes".

Nancy Wilson sounding like Jimmy Scott on "When Did You Leave Heaven", "Someone To Watch Over Me", & "The Masquerade Is Over".

Gerald Alston sounding like Sam Cooke on "Ä Change Is Gonna Come".

Sonny Turner sounding like Tony Williams on the classic Platter's songs.

JJ Barnes and Steve Mancha
Donnie Elbert and Freddie Hughes
Sam Cooke and L.C.Cooke.
Frankie and the Classicals and The Mylestones.
Johnny Taylor(very early)and Sam Cooke.
Bobby Hendrix and Clyde McPhatter(only on drip drop)
Bob Brady and Smokey Robinson.
Ann Sexton and Rita Da Costa.
The Remarkables and The Incredibles.
Charles Perry and Jimmy Huff.
Bobby Patterson and Willie Hamilton.
The Oracles and The Orientals.
Mickey Lee Lane and Mitch Ryder.
The 4 Tempo's and Archie Bell and the Drell's.
The Combinations and the C.O.D.'s.
L.C.Cooke and Willie Hightower.
Bobby Coleman and Spooner Oldham.

Before anyone starts to rant and rave and disagree these are my personal opinions on some 45s that I have or have had over the years.

On the majority of the listed they only ever sounded similar on just one track whilst listening.

I always thought for example that when the Drifters did the classic "drip drop"
on Lead to me sounded a lot like Clyde McPhatter on that one track.

And the same with the others
all very reminiscent off each other,to me anyway.

Then again I thought Kell Osborne was in the Distants and not the Primes
so what do I know.

A somewhat obscure british female singer named Polly Browne who had a minor US hit in the mid 1970s with "Up In A Puff of Smoke" sounds very much like Jean Terrell on this track. She could also sound a lot like Dionne Warwick as evidenced on a track she recorded as part of a duo called Sweet Dreams. The song in question is called "Best of Everything" and it is actually an imitation of the Dionne/Spinners' sound on "Then Came You."

Anybody else famoliar with Polly Browne and noticed the similarity of her voice to Dionne Warwick & Jean Terrell?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Nish (66.119.33.170) on Saturday, June 28, 2003 - 01:11 pm:

The Dionne Warwick-Jean Terrell comparison is right on. Jean is my vocal idol!!

S.S. - you done went and named one of my favorite renditions of "Ooh Baby Baby." Clarence sounds fantabulous. I also love the song done by the ESCORTS, HONEY CONE, PERFECT BLEND, and the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. I'm always puzzled at the fact that no Motown rendition of "Ooh Baby Baby" has been unearthed yet. I thought perhaps Brenda or the Tempts could have possibly covered the song.

I agree with you on your list of underrateds, Tony Drake, Linda Jones and Jimmy Scott especially. I'd also have to add Patti Drew and Freddie Scott to the mix.

RE: Jimmy, I hear so many of my favorite tenors just borrowing copiously from the book of Jimmy, same with Nancy Wilson and a host of other jazz singers. He's got a phrasing style that is just out of sight, ALWAYS in the groove of the song, ALWAYS, but still creating his own time and playing around with the melody.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Soul Sister (68.73.167.246) on Saturday, June 28, 2003 - 01:57 pm:

Hi Nish;
Your right on, what Jimmy does with time & space is uniquely his own. Behind the beat but always right on time, immpecable phrasing, clear as a bell voice, angelic, other worldly are phrases used by many to describe his style.
Have you heard the album produced by Ray Charles, "Falling In Love Is Wonderful" ? Or the "Lost & Found"CD ? Any of the Savoy stuff, or in recent years the grammy nominated "All The Way"CD ?
RE: Clarence Burke,Jr. I think his voice had a very special quality about it, lots of genuine feeling for a 16 year old at the time. They too(Stairsteps)should have got bigger & much more recognition.
Good Listing,
S.S.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Nish (170.224.224.38) on Saturday, June 28, 2003 - 02:05 pm:

One thing about the five stairsteps - when I listen to them, I never think "young group." They don't sound like teeny boppers. I can only think of one song that has a teeny bopper slant to it, "Playgirl's Love." And Clarence Burke's voice is just precocious. And my heart completely STOPS when I hear him sing "If you really love me, let me be your fool." I mean, siiiigh, that is just a well sung line from "Come Back."

"You Waited Too Long" was the 1st. song on the radio I ever heard by them, I went right to the record store and bought it! Loved the B-side of the 45 too, "Don't Waste Your Time", then after "World Of Fantasy"came out and the LP, I went right out and bought it.
I went to a show at the Apollo and at a theater in Elizabeth, NJ who's name I can't recall or maybe it was Newark, we were in a huge shared dressingroom sitting right with them. The kids were running around acting like typical kids do, then they'd go onstage & perform like saavy adults. Only Papa Burke was there at that time. When Mama was at the Apollo show the kids seemed more quieter. Guess a mother's presence keeps kids on their best behavior! It was fun to watch them.

Smokey comparisons

Dont Wanna Play Pajama Games....I think G C Cameron sounds more Smokey than Smokey!

I also constantly imagine Smokey singing when I hear Mary Wells on some of her early Motown productions.

Brenda Holloway is virtually mimicing Smokey on "My Baby Moves Me"

Even Martha Reeves gets close to Smokey on her versions of Tracks of my Tears and Give Her (Him) Up (the song on the Special Occasion LP). Martha has a very soothing sexy quality when she sings in that style

Fontella Bass (remember her?) her "Rescue Me" sounded amazingly like Aretha. In fact, I've won a couple of bets with people who actually thought it *was* Aretha.

When you really think about it the list is endless. Here are just a few:

Syreeta and Diana Ross voices definitely do have a sameness in vocal quality. I've always thought this, but in a contest, Syreeta would take Diana down. Sweet-sounding as her tunes can be, one listen to her "Tiki Tiki Donga" proves Syreeta can reached down deep and rustle up some serious GRIT! Never heard Diana get gritty.

However, today's pop singer Maya, is Syreeta's musical twin.

D'Angelo mimics a damn good Al Green.
Maxwell does a decent Smoky.

Lots cats are staring to sound like Donny Hathaway; though Musiq (Soulchild) comes closest.

New soul crooner Bilal sounds strikingly close to Prince.

And Jahiem seems to channel Teddy P. to the point where sounds like Teddy just spit him out.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Eli (205.188.209.109) on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 12:07 pm:

I grew up with Teddy and played on all of his hits with and without the Bluenotes, and IMO Jaheim sounds nothing like him.
He sounds closer to Miles Jaye and Christopher
Williams. He sounds "watered down" to me.
He only wishes he could sound like Teddy.
T.P. had MUCH more power in his voice, closer to Marvin Junior of the Dells who Teddys first songs were originally written for.
I have explained this on earlier threads.

I know that Teddy is Jaheim's idol but.........

You must admit that was a good catch Moanman made with Fontella Bass and Aretha Franklin. I never would have thought of it, but in retrospect it's obvious.

Going back to what someone else posted: the first time I heard RESCUE ME(during an oldies TV ad), I was sure it was Aretha Franklin. I'm sure a lot of people got confused over that. It couldn't have helped when Aretha did record a version of RESCUE ME (retitled DELIVER ME) for her Pizza Hut commercial.

Top of pageBottom of page   By moanman (24.44.218.110) on Thursday, July 31, 2003 - 03:40 pm:

The odd (or maybe really interesting ) thing about "Rescue Me" is it was recorded in 1965 (I believe), & Aretha was at that time, a hitless "pop" singer on the Columbia label, & not yet the Atlanta Soul Diva she was destined to become. So maybe Fontella "did Aretha" before Aretha did.

I know Philip Bailey always said Eddie Kendricks WASN'T his primary influence, but it's amazing how alike the two of them sound at times, both equally good. There are a lot of falsetto soul singers throughout history, but those two sound more alike than any other two falsetto singers I can think of.

Stevie Wonder was clearly influenced by Donny Hathaway's early records.......particularly on "Talking Book" and "Innervisions."

I agree Norman Johnson sounded a lot like Levi Stubbs. Know who else sounds like Levi? The lead dude for The Village People. I never cared for the Village People and the way they presented themselves, but I always thought it was a shame the lead singer didn't get a chance to just cut some soul music. He actually had a classic soul voice. Kind of a waste, really.

BTW.....plenty of reggae singers were influenced by soul acts, too. Bunny Wailer at times tries to imitate Curtis Mayfield's approach.......and Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals sounds a lot like Otis Redding on some of the Maytals' hits.

Hey Stu/I love The Dan and they're not about his vocals in a technical way - more about the fact he developed a stylised performance that suits their smartass/genius lyrics and way cool musical style.
Tell me it was just for the gag?
BTW,Maybe you know he was a reluctant lead singer, but partner Becker(not Ted Danson) and he decided he 'fit' the songs better than a more technically gifted but less 'knowing' vocalist.....on the tv documentary 'classic albums'(Aja) when they're listening at the mixing desk and isolate a track of Fagens' vocals on (from memory) 'Peg' - Fagen himself jokes that this was his 'Jerry Lewis period' - even more appropriate than Daffy Duck methinks !!!
Having read yr post re yr brothers' achievements and catching some of his resume on Internet Movie Database(imdb.com),I can't believe he feels same about The Dan - if you are, indeed,'serious' in yr crack at Fagen....and that makes me hope/think yr just ragging on Fagen for the joke????

Stu/ I hear you...seems you're in the 'don't like The Dan' camp - that's ok.I appreciate you've heard all the arguments and they're not for everyone,I guess.
On a musical kick,in additional support of The Dan - with relevance to this Forum,I've always noted that they've employed some exceptionally funky musicians and,in a way,put them in a different environment, whilst letting their gifts permeate what some still perceive to be 'soulless' and slick music....wow,that even pains me to write that - I'm thinking Bernard Purdie/Ed Greene/Chuck Rainey/Paul Griffin/Wilton Felder and on the Two Against Nature cd - Ricky Lawson(was awesome to listen to on the dvd that partnered that album).
I do believe that there's much soul to discover in The Dans' craft....and probably there's the rub, their music is sooooo crafted that it probably takes a lot of listening to finally 'get it'.....and that's not meant in a high-faluttin' way,it's just them's the facts,IMO.
To anybody who has failed to find funk or soul in The Dan - pls give it another attempt - 'tis there, honest.

I remember countless occasions I had the same problem.I eventually got to the stage with a Record Store in Glasgow (Listen Records,Renfield Street) that I often had to tell them that the batch of a given album ,most likely had the same fault and, unless they paid my rail fare each time I took a replacement and had to come back,I was going to burn their store down(a joke).....they knew I bought a lot and relented - I'd pick another album until they got a new batch in on the problem one!!

Joe Stubbs is deceased, Walt. When he was alive I hear he did fill in for Levi from time to time. You asked Scratcher but I'll answer "She's Not Just Another Woman" by Eighth Day is the exact track and singing that first appeared on 100 Proof's album. Steve Mancha is singing the lead not Joe Stubbs. They put it out as a single by Eighth Day cause 100 Proof already had a hit on the charts and they didn't want to intefere with it. There wasn't even a group assembled as Eighth Day when they put the single out "as buy them." When the tune started hitting they put a group together with Melvin Davis and others.
