Hal Davis / West Coast Motown

Top of pageBottom of page   By Lonnie Cook (198.81.26.170) on Thursday, June 26, 2003 - 03:06 am:

When Motown made the move to create and produce in Los Angeles the initial heads were Hal Davis and Marc Gordon. They were in the building across the street from the building where they eventually had three full floors at Sunset and Vine. A studio on the West Coast came about many years later, all they had was a piano and tape recorders. Why is it that Hal Davis seems to be left out of 95% of the accounts of Motown's history? He produced many of their megahits, why no mention? Where can I get good pictures of him?

I knew Hal was deceased, I am here in L.A. where he died. Still, of all the documentaries and tv specials I have ever seen about Motown, Hal Davis's name has only been mentioned once. He produced Michael Jackson as a solo, 95% of the Jackson 5 hits, "Don't leave me this way" by Thelma Houston, "Love hangover" by Diana, and countless others. Why no mention? Where can I find pictures of him? Please e-mail some if any are available.

I saw a pic of Hal and Brenda Holloway once but I can't remember where, probably a Motown book. Hal was a brown skinned guy with a football players' physique (fullback or linebacker).

There's a pic of Hal & Paul Petersen together in J.Randy Taborelli's(sp?) Motown book.

Peace!

It's no secret that I was never thrilled with Motown's West Coast operation. However Hal Davis was a completely different story. Hal was talented and definitely not caught up in the Hollywood BS. I didn't know Hal very well but I liked and respected him. He was a true producer.

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Thursday, June 26, 2003 - 12:09 pm:

Lonnie:
Check out Motown's "Hitsville USA" boxed set. There's a great picture of Hal Davis & Marc Gordon mixing a Marvin Gaye session (Marvin & Anna are in the photo as well).

Hal seemed to have been mentioned in Berry Gordy's book as the producer of "I'll Be There" and Barry White acknowledged him in his autobiography "Love Unlimited."

I recall an anecdote given by Hal Davis that I believe was published in Billboard's Book of #1 R&B Hits. It was regarding the Jackson 5's "Never Can Say Goodbye" and the complications Hal had encountered in getting the song released. So, when Gordy was in his LA office, Hal went next door and played the acetate (?) at full blast. Gordy ran into the office and asked him why this record wasn't out. After Hal told him that Motown's QC was holding up the release, Gordy himself gave the single the green light and the rest is history.

There's also a great photo of Hal Davis in Weldon McDougall's book "The Michael Jackson Scrapbook: The Early Years of the Jackson 5." The photo includes Michael at about age 13, Suzee Ikeda, and Hal Davis wearing a fur coat and leather hat in the studio. Must have been some air conditioning system operating then!

If it's okay with Mr McDougall, I'd be happy to scan the photo and post it here.

When the Spinners did their last Thom Bell produced album,we did the tracks at Armin Steiner's Sound Lab studio in L.A.
Armin shared a lot of stories with us'
Across the hall in studio b was Phillip Bailey wirking on a project.

In fact, whenever I produced records in L.A. there was always someone decent in the next studio wherever we were.

When I did the first Atlantic Starr album at Hollywood Sound, either E.W.F. or P Funk were in the next room.

Ahh, those were the days.

Lotta stories about "Never can say goodbye" written by Clifton Davis. Hal was on the board at NARAS at the time and quit it because they did not give his song 'Song of the year'. He said it out sold and and was played more than B. J. Thomas's "Raindrops keep fallin' on my head". Hal was a man of conviction. Any of you ever have his 'Motown Slush'?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (205.188.209.109) on Friday, June 27, 2003 - 11:04 pm:

As Scratcher tried to explain -- everyone who posts from America Online in roughly the same time period is funneled through the same ISP. It's a peculiarity of AOL that it has a set number of ISPs, and AOL users go through a variety of them. If I post late at night, I may come through a different AOL ISP than when I posted at 9 a.m. But if I'm posting at the same time as other AOL members, we'll have the same ISP.

I am not STUBASS, nor am I Bobby Eli, or Jim G or Dennis Coffey, yet I know those folks also come through AOL because often we have the same ISPs.

So STUBASS is STUBASS. Everybody has a different style of posting, and we can generally tell when someone's trying to pull a fast one.

Hal was notorious for inoffice meetings at three or four in the morning. He had an orange juice, vodka, and rum special concoction that he offered everyone that was guaranteed to "break the ice'. I cannot tell you what it tasted like because I always refused to accept it. He never told me what the amounts of anything were but he talked about it all the time. I thought some of you guys may have had the pleasure.

I started this topic because I could not find anything anywhere on the internet about my old musical compadre. I decided that I would design a website about Hal whenever I had enough material and backing so I came on asking for pictures to start with. Now I will broaden the solicitation to include anything that may be of interest. Hal was indeed a one of a kind selfconscious, but proudly creative musician. In case none of you knows he sang in groups, solo, duets, produced, managed, composed, sat on Boards (Consoles and organizational), seemingly worked 24+ hours a day, and was on call 24 hours a day to Berry Gordy Jr. He kept his job everytime the axe fell at Motown no matter what. He needed a secure place to keep that slush!!!!!!! Motown was never the same after his departure and we all miss the first 'Babyface' Hal Davis.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Lonnie Cook (198.81.26.170) on Thursday, July 03, 2003 - 11:27 am:

Hal had his personal favorites as far as singers for background, instumental musicians, engineers, and songwriters and invariably he would use these over and over. Arthur Wright, James Gadson (another Kansas Citian), and Melvin Webb (formerly of Bloodstone and also K.C.)to name a few. I will never forget the time I worked with him on a song I had written and wanted to release because everything that transpired was typical of him but mostly foreign to me. He would never let his left hand know what the right was doing so as to be the one everyone had to rely on to get things done right. At four in the morning we met on the seventeenth floor at Sunset and vine and I sang the lyrics and arrangement as Hal taped it. That was the last of my involvement until I went into Appolo Studios to do the vocals. James, Arthur, and Melvin were all on the track he had recorded and I was elated to think that I was finally going to get what I wanted out of a recording session. When the track started it was apparent that each of the verses was 4 bars shorter than what had been dictated into the tape recorder. Hal had obviously allowed Arthur to do the rhythm tracks at his studio and me thinks Arthur thought that I had made a mistake, but I had not. Rather than scrap a song that I was so up on I restructured the lead vocal to fit what I was given to work with.

I would like to have more info on and pictures of people that worked with Hal on a regular basis so that when I do the website it will be more interesting. More stories would be nice, also.

I am still waiting on at least three good pictures of Hal. I am definitely going to put up a page for him and will need at least that. Any factual info you can provide would be nice , too.
This will include his musical existence premotown as well. I do not know where he was born and was reared (I think L.A. ). I only know whatever Hal volunteered to disclose. Kevin Goins reminded me of a story Hal told me once about how he had to provide clothing for Barry White when Barry was down (never out). Hal decked him out with Sunday, go to meeting, threads.

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Tuesday, July 08, 2003 - 02:55 pm:

Lonnie:
In Barry White's autobiography, he does indeed mention Hal going through his closets and giving Barry his suits, ties, dress shirts since they wore the same size - "the coldest threads (Barry) had ever seen." Hal also told Barry that turning his wardrobe over was "the hip thing to do" in the LA circles (is is still hip? :)). Barry said that Hal's genorosity helped boost his confidence at a time when he was struggling.

Kevin,
Still waiting to hear from you on the side but to answer your ? I never heard tell of anyone in Hollywood being altruistic or caring enough to share with someone like Hal did, and most people would not be caught dead wearing someone else's identifiable gladrags. So I think it was a dual purpose gesture for if anyone saw something on Barry that was that distinctively a hand me down from Hal it would have been perceived as an advertisement and would have bolstered Hal's career. Hal had no crappy clothing. Did you ever meet him? He dressed to dwarf an affliction. Bottom line is I think Hal shot one over someone's head if he in fact said it was the in thing to do.

Lonnie:
I've seen pics of Hal Davis dating back to the early 1960s and he was indeed a sharp dresser. Hal was indeed built like a linebacker (like our dear Mr. White) so for he & Barry to wear the same size is no surprise. Barry did describe in his book that Hal had some of the "coldest threads" he had ever seen and the clothing was indeed tailored.

When I have enough info and pictures I am going to build a webpage on him, I really do not see any harm in that objective. When I searched all of the Motown related sites I could find no mention of him and to me that stinks. He made a helluva contribution to this business. If there is some reason that I am not aware of that would make that a bad idea just let mt know.

Thank you, Ralph, my skin has always been impervious to insult. Sometimes that hurts more than retaliation. For the record I am not here to upset anyone, but I have nevertheless.

Doowop/Lonnie,

Forum members are here to help each other in their quest for (constructive) knowledge. If there is anything that a forum member can help you with, they will gladly do so.

"Treena",

The forum has been been back to its FAMILY atmosphere since your hiatus. I beg you to please crawl back under your rock!

Vonnie

Hal Davis and Rene Hall worked together on the Jackson 5 sessions, back in the day......hey Vonnie, thats not nice! I live above ground just like you.

Play nice, or I will get ugly....I was asked to help, check the names on the posts.

Treena:
Your negativity - which you displayed from the git-go - is no help to anyone and any attempts of you "getting ugly" will only result in removal from the Forum.

Good luck Lonnie, I sent you what I have and you can use all the pictures you want.

Treena baby,
You get ugly on here and I'll be all over you like a cheap suit. Once and for all..Hal is revered here. Unfortunately he is not as well known by the forum members as other producers are. Hopefully we can help the forum get to know just what a exceptional man Hal was. ( remember..I speak from experience ) So don't get cute Treena. I'm being dead serious on this matter. Things are running smoothly and pleasently here since your last " visit " and I will tolerate no bull shit.

Observer:
First of all, we have warned this woman to behave herself out here - she has not.

Second of all, your post regarding SD not having an agenda is way off base. David Meikle - one of the founders of this site and someone I know personally - has a goal for this site and that is to show people, especially our youth, the musical contributions made by one city. He has not only done that but allowed room out here on the forum to discuss other cities and contributors to soul/R&B.

Finally, the reason why "address" Treena is the same reason why we address each other - we don't let any post go unanswered.

Having said that, let's move on from this discussion of "Treena" or Carol Kaye or whoever she wants to call herself this time and focus on the music of Detroit.

Just sent you a pertinent e-mail.

Did you listen to the sounds?

BassLand
Why did Paulie have 3 shoes?
Must be over my head or before my time.
Is that a Sopranos reference?

I'm trying my best to keep a low profile, but junk like this riles me no end.

Start reading the webisodes, that's what SoulfulDetroit's about.

Please remember that those who like to stir it up will go away...... if ignored.

Someone asked about the Brenda Holloway association and how close they came to matrimony, I, for one, have no definitive response on that issue. All I know for sure is that he did some serious duets with her, guided her career in the early years, and was there for her, throughout, while he was alive.

Where is Mona lisa Young, Nolen and Crossley, Thelma Houston, Diana Ross, and Michael J? Do they ever have input on the forum?

We need to compile a list of all the artists that he worked with, it will come in handy for the website. Put your thinking caps on, go thru those records, and you industry icons remember that , even after going to work for Berry, he was a notorious moonlighter. He worked with many artists during that period that were not signed to Motown, I was one.

FrancisT,
I am due to be on stage during that allnighter weekend so you will see me. They told me that LaMont Dozier, Gladys Horton (Marvelettes), and Chris James, the Natural Four lead, will be among the 40 artists on stage at one time or other.

Still looking for a lot of answers and contact with artists that Hal produced and recorded. Where is Arthur Wright, Eddie Summers, and did you know Melvin Webb (deceased), from Bloodstone?

Hey hey Paulie, i gotta tip for you

Let me help you with your Bball fundamentals, in this case your dribble. Next time you can further perfect it by not using the word pole behind your classic nort'. Overall it takes a fair degree of genius to construct it, in the first place, so don't think I do not appreciate it. Thank God for the art of language. I must admit though that ??#$%^&*( says nothing to me. Let's have some meaning to your leaning, and think of Hal and figure out how to get him back in this thread as you review what you said.

Julian,
Gerry Diez ia a very famous doo wop collector and he deals with some very high priced merchandise, so if you have other things you are looking for do not hesitate to ask him. He was on my computer when he responded to you but is not accustomed to using it. His wife helps him with the computer and you can send him a message or a want list thru her and the live e-mail on his post.
