Well Stu, that's a good question. In the San Francisco area that could be a number of places. There are a lot of docks in the infamous Pier 39 area whch is a large tourist attraction. Tour boats leave there to go to Alcatraz and points across the bay.
Anybody's guess I suppose.

Stu:
Make sure you pick up THE VERY BEST OF OTIS REDDING or THE DEFINITIVE OTIS REDDING on Atlantic/Rhino. These CDs used the original mono single masters and the remastering is very good.

You might be on to something Stu. Where were certain song writers when the inspiration for a particular song hit them?

I didn't know that about "I'll Try Something New"! Such an odd start for such an elegant song.

Stubass:
Are you sure it was Kenny Nolan who wrote "Rag Doll" for the Four Seasons? I've read on two separate accounts (one of them the book "Behind The Hits" written by WCBS-FM's Bob Shannon) that Bob Gaudio came up with the idea for "Rag Doll" when he was driving home to NJ from Manhattan. He saw a young girl washing car windows along the street leading to the Lincoln Tunnel (en route to NJ) yet when she approached his car, the smallest amount of money Bob had was a ten dollar bill. So, Bob gave her the ten dollars and as he drove away, he saw her smile in his rear view window. When he got home, he wrote "Rag Doll", which became the group's fourth number one hit.

I think somebody told me, possibly at the Stax Museum, that the the idea for "Dock of the Bay" came from somebody else after he got back to Memphis and was telling them about his experience.
