Hi Soulmates!

I found two singles in my collection by a singer called Sam E. Solo. The A-side is called Tears Keep Falling on Imperial.

Solo1.jpg

The other single is hmmm It is the same single but released on another label Ruby the B-side is called Love Is Not A Game. It is a Pied Piper Production, not mentioned on the Imperial release.

My question is: Who is this guy? Any other records by him? Is Ruby a Detroit label? I dont have to mention that both sides are great.

Lars, Mr. Schawrtz has an address and phone number in B.M.I., it's a Michigan address.

Lars, Ruby is a Detroit label--the Wonderettes were on it as well. The Sam E. Solo 45 was a hit in Detroit and was picked up by Imperial. But I think Love Is Not a Game is the better side--great stuff! I don't know anything about Mr. Solo--it's odd that he cut one record that had so much success locally, but apparently didn't get otten another opportunity to record. There's sure nothing wrong with his voice.

Bob Schwartz was a Detroit area promotion man and Sam E. Solo is Sammy Wheeler(I think that is his last name) from(and still) Flint,Michigan. he recorded his first record in 1962 on the Rip Cor label in Flint called "Jackie Please" B/W "Goodby My Love" Rip-Cor 6001

Wow, Ron, I've got that Little Sammy and the Wheelettes single on Rip-Cor--it's great--but I had no idea it was Sam E. Solo. Many thanks for that info.

Scratcher, Joe, Ron and Mel, many thanks for all info! Interesting stuff! Mel, A-side of the Sam E. Solo Ruby single also has that "The Gem Side" printed on label, but Bernad Schwartz is not credited as producer as on the Imperial release.

Sam had another 45 on Ruby called "Bad Bad Whiskey," although he's credited as Sammy Solo (# 5090).
The Ruby catalogue numbers correlate with the (Detroit) Enterprise label.

David, the only other bits I can add are the Rip Cor label's address - 1606 Avenue. Flint. Mich. and that I think there was at release on Ruby by Chuck Wallace. Keith

I need help with quite a few bits & pieces, I've asked on the forum before about London Fog & the Continentals on Gold Stars `Trippin'` It is an organ led instrumental. The reason why I asked is because a guy came on the forum using the name London Fog but he never appeared again. I bought this from John Anderson and it's pretty accepted that they are from Detroit but was the label do you know? (For info. London Fog is the name of a quality outer garment company from Baltimore. Their trade mark is Big Ben.) Also Funco (Fun Company Records) does anyone know any artists please? PS I've got scores of questions like this!!!! Keith

Ruby seems to have part of Enterprise, the Ruby
numbers fit in the Enterprise number series.

I seem to remember reading that Bob Schwartz died
relatively recently.

keith: are you talking about "trippin"/"easy mover," which came out on imperial by london fogg? i didn't realize there was a detroit connection or a local release...

Top of pageBottom of page   By Joe Moorehouse (205.188.209.109) on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 12:33 pm:

Matt, Keith is talking about Trippin' b/w Easy Mover. Before it was issued on Imperial, it was on a label called Gold Stars (gold with black print). I've owned it in the past, and have always been sure it's a Detroit release--but I don't own it now, and can't remember WHY I've been sure it's a Detroit release. Maybe it says Detroit on the label; maybe it's an Archer pressing; maybe there was a familiar Detroit name in the credits; I just don't know.

Sammy's other release on Ruby is indeed 'Bad bad whiskey(Davis) b/w Baby baby (Toombs- Ivy) but his name is not spelt 'Solo' but'SOULO'. Baby baby is the 'A' side incidentally.
