Having had a difficult week at work, I hadn't been on the site since last weekend and was therefore rather surprised / shocked to read David's apology. So I looked through various threads to catch up. Why have things gone like this? Without patronising anyone I would like to mention a few FACTS about folk who contribute to this site; David Meikle, while I was writing a book about the most influential Soul club outside of the USA, David spent HOURS helping me and his contibution to the project made it a success. John Lester, I met John almost 30 years ago and he is the most selfless person I have ever met. He cares about people and Soul music he DOSEN'T care about money & ego, John had a crisis in life sometime ago and the dignity he showed made him a man in my eyes. Lars Nilsson, in the early 70s there were only a few of us who were specifically interested in Detroit Soul and Lars was one of them and he used to help me and others out at great cost to himself. If I needed a record Lars would help me find it. John Smith, Keith Hershell, Francis T, Gary Cape, Ady Croasdel...they are all committed to Soul music. They are all old friends. I have also `met` some great new friends....Davie Gordon, Reg Bartlett, Richie, Melandthensome, JimG, KevGo, etc. Koolcat (Graham) and I both have a book in the pipeline and he could well be quite hostile to my questions but no, if I ask him anything he tells me. Soul music is our common language, not egos. Why all of this arguing? In Britain. in the 60s the Stones, Beatles etc dominated but some of us wanted to hear American Soul music and you guys around the world need to understand that we became obsessed with Soul music, we fought, lived, divorced, tatooed ourselves with it. It can't be compared to the Carolinas Beach Scene interest, we are SERIOUS. Please stop arguing. I am 53 and black US music has influenced and enriched most of those years and I cannot allow this site to go down the pan because some people's egos are bigger than `What's in the Grooves`. I have just played the Servicemen, `Are You Angry` it makes the hairs on my neck stand up and I am not going to let David jack it in because of some `wassaks` as we say in Yorkshire. Keith

A small question, Keith. Is a 'wassak' similar to a 'wanker' or a 'tosser'? And, if so, which is at the top, or bottom, of the heap?
A scale of 1 to 10 would help clarify things.
As a failed wanker, I'm curious to know if I still have a shot at the bigtime.
When people think you're a tosser, they know you're nothing but a downgraded wanker. It's tough sometimes.

Hi Keith

Thanks a lot. I know exactly what you mean.

However I still have to learn when not to over react.

I made a snide remark to Vandelron. Someone else came in, compounded things and it exploded.

The episode lasted about 30 hours and became extremely embarrassing.

As for me jacking it. That's my third attempt and probably not the last (realistically).

I think I will be here for the duration however, still trying to act with more maturity.

David
PS to those who received a copy of a certain Magazine in Detroit, as I explained at the time it was from this particular Keith.

Some of the mags were also sold at the event at Keiths request and brought in some additional income.

Keith thanks again for your unselfish gesture.

Well said Mr Rylatt
and then some.
I for one am most certainly in debt to David
for this fine sight.
Having been a collector and still a club goer
and still collecting with the same drive and ambition as I did way back in 1971/2
I never ever thought I would be talking to the artists that were all on the various mega-rare soul 45s that I was finding hard as hell to get on a tape let alone own one.

And here I am 32 years on still an avid collector but corresponding with legends whom if I was to say in 72 that I would be doing this would most certainly of been sectioned and in a padded cell
cue Mr Misery on Toddling Town Records.

And I owe it all and a lot more to
David Meikle
and co. but to David at this end
of the line and for being very open and enabling me to sensationally talk to a lot of the afore mentioned artists.

also getting to know various names from the scene but never actually knew personally.

And a lot of great and knowledgeble guys and chicks from over the pond.

So
always keep to the beat
keep away from the heat
and instead of jibbing people that dont tally to your way of thinking at times
just put a clamp on it.

Nobody knows it all and were all here to learn from the people that were there at the time etc.

So Keith Rylatt
I am with you all the way mate.

It's true Mel, we have many knowledgeable folks here from the home of Soul, the United States of America.

Thanks to you all for sharing.

Ralph. I applaude you for not censoring Eddie. Web site forums / chat rooms are often frequented by inadequate people and the world would be a sad place if folk like Eddie were not allowed to vent their frustrations. In my youth I recall the Teen Queens & Heinz singing about a guy named Eddie. Eddie, listen to the Persuasions, `It's A Thin Line Between Love and Hate`. Keith

Keith, you are completely wrong. I've spent years being invisible, but never inadequate. I would have lost my job as Assistant Chief TuneViewer years ago if I were inadequate!

The world needs more Eddies Keith. In fact, in honor of the fact that OUR Eddie seems to be a gentleman, I nominate him Chief Wanker of Soulful Detroit. See Eddie, you're no longer invisable pal. Congratulations. Make us proud. Wank on.

1Wicked. Sorry, had just returned from `The Old Plantation` and 5 pints of Greene King IPA. (India Pale Ale) for the uninitiated. Have been known to get my own name wrong at that stage! Keith

The Persauders/Persuasions thing just kinda jumped at me because I've had a dialogue with Jerry Lawson (Persuasions) about the possibility of getting a couple of out of print LP's done on CD. If there is money for the artists to make (if the artist has ownership), I'd rather buy direct than use "alternate" sources.

Keith...sounds like u were feeling no pain !! LOL
I remember THOSE days quite fondly.

Keith:
Thank you for your post.

When David told me what his mission (or one of his missions) was and is with Soulful Detroit - to make sure young Black kids knew their heritage - my respect for him increased many-fold.

He and others have done an excellent job in keeping the soul/R&B flame alive.
