R&B, Arthur Lee Maye never sang with the Platters to my knowledge. But being from their stomping grounds (Los Angeles) it's possible he sang with some of the members before they hit big. He sang with his own group Arthur Lee Maye & the Crowns; he either started as a baseball player or embarked on both careers at approximately the same time.

To answer your question, nearly all. Most recording artists unless they were entertainers too and actively played gigs couldn't survive and had to take 9 to 5 jobs. Many worked 9 to 5 jobs while they were having their biggest hits and never quit their day jobs to go on the road fulltime.
