Well I thought it might be interesting for those who might be technically inclined. : - )

Jay,
Sorry pal, I just now got around to reading the thread. We weren't ignoring you. Yes, very interesting. OK you want a cookie now? :>

I'll take the geek bait. One annoyance with this specific approach is that for some reason (disc space perhaps?), the amusing "Steely Dan Confessions" featurette is 10 minutes longer on the DVD/CD combnination than it is as an extra on the DVD-Audio. Technology is fun, but I suspect those music biz marketing folks are now trying to make me buy more than one copy of the same material on the very day it is released. They used to make me wait a year or two for the remasters. :)

Regards,
Ken

STEELY DAN IS ONE OF THE BEST *MUSICAL* BANDS AROUND...GREAT PLAYERS...BUT THEY TOTALLY LOSE ME ON DONALD FAGAN'S VOCALS!!!...IF FAGAN IS SINGING...I THINK I'LL PASS...BUT IF THEY EVER GOT A LEAD SINGER THAT SOUNDS LIKE A CARTOON CHARACTER OTHER THAN DAFFY DUCK...I'D SURE GIVE IT A LISTEN!!!...STUBASS

Your wish is "The Dan's" command, Mr. Miller. Walter Becker takes the lead on one track on the new album. He sorta talk-sings it and resembles Droopy Dog. :)

Ken

Thanks for the cookie!!!

A few years ago SD received their long-overdue grammy. for a piece of uninspired protools-overprocessed, sterilized dung called "Two Against Nature".

This award I believe was a long-overdue payback from all the years where they had used the industry's finest session musicians and turned out some truly remarkable tracks.

Hey Stu
Even Fagan places his vocals WAY back in the mix.
He probably hates his own voice too!
On KCET public TV an announcer referred to him as looking like a combination of Ray Charles and Dracula when he sings!

I just thought that the new multi-format release strategy was interesting both artistically and technologically.

I am just glad they a promoting better quality formats than the existing CDs.

You all dont like Don Fagen's singing? He is not the greatest singer in the world but I think his watery underwater sounding voice fits the music especially on I Got the News on the AJA album..I thought it was hilarious in Hey Nineteen when he said "Skate a little slower now"/.....LOL Russ is right that junk they won the grammy for was a sympathy vote I would have rather seen them get a Lifetime Achievement Award they do deserve although they are mainly a studio band...

STEPH...JAY...AND ALL!!!...I THINK THE REASON THAT I GET ON DONALD FAGANS CASE SO MUCH IS THAT DESPITE THE FACT THAT I THINK HE'S A HORRIBLE SINGER...CERTAIN FRIENDS OF MINE ARE ALWAYS GETTING ON MY CASE BECAUSE I DIG "THE BEACH BOYS"...AND THESE FRIENDS ALWAYS RAG TO ME ON HOW THE B.B'S NEVER HAD A GOOD LEAD SINGER!!!...NOW WHILE MIKE LOVE IS NO "PAVROTTI"...HE COULD CERTAINLY BLOW DONALD FAGAN RIGHT OUT OF THE WATER!!!...AND BRIAN WILSON WAS NO SMOKEY OR EDDIE WHEN IT CAME TO FALSETTO...BUT THAT CRAP SEEMED TO WORK...AND THEIR BACKGROUND HARMONY WAS SIMPLISTICALLY BEAUTIFUL...IN ADDITION TO USING A LOT OF FINE MUSICIANS...SO I'LL TAKE "THE BEACH BOYS" OVER "STEELY DAN"...ANY DAY!!!...STUBASS

BTW, I like Donald Fagen's voice for what it is. Heck, I even like Walter Becker's voice on the track he sings. I think the new albums is a big improvement over the previous one, but not quite at the level of, say, Aja. I'm not exactly an SD expert though.

BTW, steering almost in the direction of the forum's subject, has anyone heard Fagen's singing on the "New York Rock and Soul Revue: Live at the Beacon Theater" album? He sing's lead on a versions of Ray Bryant's "Madison Time".

Also, the "Steely Dan Confessions" bit where they are riding around Las Vegas in a Taxi with various passengers has got to be the funniest bit of electronic press kit promotional material that I have ever seen. Especially when the girl starts talking about how she loves "Reeling in the Years" so much and then sings almost every word wrong.

Regards,
Ken
