Have any of you Detroiters heard any ads or promos about the musical "Come & Get These Memories" that is suppose to open tonite at the Detroit Opera House?I talked to Martha a couple of weeks ago and everything was "Go" and it was suppose to be a 5 day run....I just saw on Motown Bullitin Board that "Martha & the Vandellas"are playing somewhere near Atlanta this weekend so I was wondering whats up?

I recall seeing ads for this when I was in Detroit at end of May.

What is this show supposed to be about, exactly? Anyone know?
By Sue (205.188.209.109) on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 09:50 am: |
I uh, wrote about it a few weeks ago.
Running a week. Las Vegas style review; young performers impersonate the Supremes, Tempts, etc. Martha headlines.

Sorry Sue, a few weeks ago, I was kind of in a pressure cooker, and missed a lot - haven't had a chance to fully catch up. My fault.
Thanks for the summary.

Nish,
No fault to you. I didn't post it here, but wrote about it in my day job. Usually somebody posts links to Motown stories at detnews.com but not lately.

This musical starts tonite, right....but I see where Martha Reeves & the Vandellas are booked 6/21/03(Sat.)in Mableton, Ga. at the Mable House Amphitheater & 6/22/03(Sun) in Baltimore at the Pier 6 Concert Pavillion.
By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 01:32 pm: |
Right now whether or not the original Vandellas -- Annette and Rosalind -- will perform in this week-long run in Detroit is highly doubtful.
By TonyRussi (68.210.7.184) on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 02:21 pm: |
Thanks Sue, I was under the impression that it was just Martha in the musical BUT I guess she won't be in it Sat. & Sun.(?)
By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 03:13 pm: |
She's in it every night, not sure what you mean.
By TonyRussi (68.210.7.184) on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 04:06 pm: |
Well, I see Martha Reeves & the Vandellas are booked this Sat. & Sun along way from Detroit.
By TonyRussi (68.210.7.184) on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 04:10 pm: |
Ofcourse maybe these 2 dates are daytime events(?)I just assumed they were at night and she can't be 2 places at once.
By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 04:26 pm: |
That is a mystery. No, Martha is set to appear June 18-22 at the Detroit Opera House in this show, she's an integral part of the show.
Either those dates aren't happening or ...is there some faux Martha out there now?
By Tony Russi (68.210.7.184) on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 04:54 pm: |
Thanks Sue, I verified those dates aren't happening for Martha & the Vandellas...Ga. Shows a Fabian show with other acts and Baltimore shows Johnny Rivers for that show.

did anyone catch the come and get these memories opening show last night? If so how was the show?
By motownfan100 (172.138.229.239) on Thursday, June 19, 2003 - 12:11 pm: |
Saw the show last night and all I can say is a very rough start for what could be a decent show.
Seemed very disorganized and the Supremes segment was marred by the fact that they were playing a track along with the band and somebody cued up the wrong track. Why would you need a track when you have a 13 piece band onstage? Martha Reeves has never been a really good singer in my opinion and her vocal performance was downright dreadful. I did enjoy the Temptation and Four Top imitators, and the young lady that did Mary Wells was very very good.

Hello of Belgium. We are the big connoisseurs of the music of Detroit and Chicago. (Motown, Chicago Soul, Northern Soul). We organize some dancing evenings, consascred to the Soul of Detroit and Chicago with (Latino, Ska, Big Voice, Popcorn). Here are some names of years 60 that we know and that we dance again today: Curtis Mayfield, Lamont Dozier, Eddie Holland, Billy Butler, Jerry Butler, Gene Chandler, Marv Johnson, Chuck Jackson, J.J Barnès, Roy Hamilton, Arthur Alexander, Brook Benton, Johnny Nash, Major Lance, Billy Stewart, The Miracles, The Spinners, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, The four Tops, and again of other. Someone could answer me and could give me news of Williams Otis and Dennis Edwards (The Temptations) and possibly of Smokey Robinson and Jerry Butler. The Soul music in Belgium always existed since more than forty years and it continues to make to vibrate us and to shiver. We dance in couple on music in mi-tempo. This style of dance one only finds it in Belgium. I will like to have an answer or of some people answers concerned by this style of music.
In a friendly way Paolino & DJ: Giuseppe!!!!

Paolino and Giuseppe,
Have you seen the film "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" yet? Be sure to see it ...it'll tell you a lot of Motown history.
Berry Gordy is well, living in Los Angeles, and recently attended a party for his former songwriters Holland-Dozier-Holland in L.A. At that same party he saw the Motown band, the Funk Brothers, for the first time in 30 years.

Does Freddie Houston always live in the Cleveland, does he appear that he sells disks?
Is Billy Butler him again in life?
Thank you

Thank you for advance!!!!!

Yes the Ford 100th bash just wound up this past Monday (with a wild party and Harry Connick concert I attended), but no Motown acts.
You can visit the Motown Museum/Hitsville, absolutely, it's one of Detroit's top tourist attractions, if not "the" top one. And you can walk through the snakepit, the recording studio.

Count,
I didn't see you but I saw your handiwork ...nah I wasn't at Toby Keith. Funny thing is, Harry Connick kept taking shots at him (and making jokes about the Ford family too) -- it was very funny!
I wanted to talk to you well before Dream Cruise so call me ...

I just heard that this show should be titled "Come and get these calamities" and has been cancelled. Any show headlining Martha could not be expected to draw flies but that's just my humble opinion.

MOTOWNFAN I AGREE WITH YOU, CAUGHT THE COME AND GET THESE MEMORIES SHOW WHICH WAS INDEED NOT A MEMORY. THANK GOD SOME NICE PERSON GAVE US SOME FREE TICKETS JUST BEFORE WE WERE ABOUT TO PURCHASE
TICKETS WHICH BY THE WAE WERE SUSPOSE TO GO FOR $31.50 BUT WHEN YOU WENT TO PURCHASE THEM THE PRICE WAS $36.50. THE PERSON WHO GAVE US THE TICKETS MADE AN EARLY EXIT AFTER HEARING MARTHA AND HER SISTERS SING THEIR FIRST NUMBER. IN MY
OPENION THE SHOW WAS NO WAY COMPARED TO A LAS VEGAS STYLE SHOW. WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED. ONE THING MISSING WAS THE ORIGINAL VANDELLAS VOCALS
ATTENDANCE WAS VERY LOW AND REEVES WAS DEFENTLY NOT IN GOOD VOCAL TO ME THE SHOW WAS TOO LONG AND TOO SLOW PACED COMPARED TO A MOTOWN REVUE. BY THE WAY THE SHOW WAS CANCELLED.

Sue mentions Hitsville as being the top Detroit tourist attraction. Is this something that is growing and growing and growing?
I get the definite feeling that the Classic Motown music is becoming stronger and stronger. Probably the result of a dearth of any enjoyable popular music.
