"A Girl Can't Go By What She Hears" was recorded by Dee Edwards when she was part of the D-Town/Wheelsville/Premium Stuff labels.

The Sanders Section may be Williams "Sonny" Sanders conducting the band (which often included moonlighting members of the Funk Brothers).

I wish we could see a scan of this label Mel.

Is there an address on it?

Sorry David,
cant help you there as I only have what I asked above.

Mel, can't say I've ever heard of a Tainx label.

The Sanders Sect single was issued on Premium Stuff 10 - the b-side I've seen listed as "A Girl ... - pt. 2" but I suspect it's actually the instrumental backing track.

Dee Edwards version was on Premium Stuff 9, b-side
was the instrumental version.

Haven't heard them but it wouldn't surprise me if they're all the same basic track with different vocal tracks.

Davie
I saw the record on an american list quite a while back but cant think why I havent got more info about it,
I will have a look and see if I can find the list but will be like looking for a needle in a haystack as I have literally hundreds of american lists alone.
Many thanks anyway.

Sorry Mel, I've never heard of this label - but my guess is it's a typo and it should be the Premium Stuff 45 that Davie's detailed.
Cheers,
Graham
BTW - It's Dee's birthday this week!

More than likely Graham,
apologies to one and all if it is.

Hi Mel,

I have not heard about the label you mentioned, but I can put some light on the Premium Stuff singles. This is the instrumental B-side of the Dee Edwards single on Premium Stuff 9:

PS9B.jpg

and this is the instrumental A-side of the Sanders Sect single on Premium Stuff 10:

PS10A.jpg

The B-side of Sanders Sect is called Part 2 but all three instrumentals are the same recording. (Master No. 14) Anyway the song is great!

Mel I agree with the guys, almost certainly a typo. Typos are the bain of anyone's life who is trying to plot the bottomless pit of Detroit's music scene. Little Sammy Ward on P-C for example, (Personal Choice Recording), I saw this on a Martco (Martin Koppel) list in the 70s as P-G, a simple typo but had to wait till I actually saw one to realise the mistake! There are a few T labels vaguely similar; Tanya, Tank, T.E.A.I. etc. Keith

Cheers Keith,
still feel a bit of a plonker though.
When will your book be coming out Keith?
would appreciate it if you could keep us informed regards your progress.
many thanks

Mel. Tried to post this yesterday.....I agree with the guys, must be a typo. They are the bain of anyone's life who is trying to map the Detroit music scene. For 20 years I was looking for a record by Little Sammy Ward on P-C (Personal Recording Company) but because Martin Koppel had hit the wrong key, I always thought it was on P-G ! (A copy of the record lives not too far from me if anyone wants details). Keith

Mel Yesterday's message has belatedly appeared, It IS `Personal Choice` by the way not `Personal Recording` (it is only 7am!). Thanks for showing interest in the book, I HAVE to give the publisher it by end of July but as you may know, the time they take is a law unto its self. Am negotiating a colour photo of Willie Kendricks at the 20 Grand for the cover, hope I can secure it. Keith

David & Mel. As I don't own the record I can't tell if the owner will scan it but he will let me give full details for the site, for the record there are other releases on P-C, Alley Kats & Sax Kari. I know that lots of the site devotees will know of them but I would like to introduce a few unknown labels / artists soon, Clix & Givhan labels for example. At this point I would love to launch into a (UK) North v South debate about Detroit records but must resist.... Keith
