And - "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" & "My Cherie Amour." Wow! And Jr. Walker & The All Stars'- "What Does It Take." I was in Germany jamming for real when that came out. And the Jackson Five's hit "Who's Loving You." That was a beautiful slow song we used to tune up on the jukebox?

SB,
Welcome to the forum. You seem to have done well with this first thread of yours. Good one. I have always maintained that my all time favorite slow song was done in the 50's. ( Now who is showing ones age? ) " For Your Love " by Ed Townsend.
By SB (205.186.130.223) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 08:01 pm: |
Carl - I loved "The Language Of Love." And let's not forget - "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted." And - "Western Union Man." (send a telegram) LOL!
By SB (205.186.130.223) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 08:07 pm: |
Thanks Ralph, I appreciate it. "For Your Love!" I love that song. Now you don't want me to pull some Sam Cooke out of you do you? LOL! "A Change Has Gotta Come." I love that song. And - forgive me - but I am still too thru that he is no longer here, and that his life was cut too short. And of course - we can say that about all of our lost and departed angels. Yet - they are still with us indeed, in our hearts - minds - souls and spirits.
Thank God for Music, lyrics, notes and chords.

One stands out above all the rest for me.
"I Do Love You" by Billy Stewart.
It has the most dynamic opening!
By Pogo (66.129.43.61) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 08:22 pm: |
Hey I got one more,
"Always & Forever" - Heatwave
By Nish (66.119.33.170) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 08:24 pm: |
SB - I forgot to welcome you! My fault. I might as well add "Confessin' A Feelin'" By Slick Sly and Wicked as well as "Sly Slick and Wicked" by the Lost Generation. And since John did us all a favor by mentioning my beloved Ralfi Pagan, what about "Make It With You" and Tony Drake's classic "Let's Play House?"
By SB (205.186.130.223) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 08:31 pm: |
Pogo. You said it. Thanks you for reminding me of that song. "Ooh - I lovayouso right now. Neva - neva gonna let - gonna let you go. No-no-no!" LOL! Billy was trying to hurt us w/that song.
Btw - thanks to you all. 'Cause you know what? I am going to print out this thread and look for some of these songs. And thank God for the Internet. LOL! We have a better chance of finding anything we wish to look for because of it.
By SB (205.186.130.223) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 08:38 pm: |
Nish thanks. I love "I Want To Make It With You." Talkin' 'bout classic. I thoguht we would run out by now - but it seems as if there is a bottomless well of classic slow numbers.
I love me some slow songs. Remember the house parties back in the day - and the slow dancing w/the lights off?
And - "Turn Back The Hands Of Time?" And - "I Second that Emotion. And - "For Once In My Life."
By Nish (216.148.244.38) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 08:56 pm: |
Pogo - If you're gonna do Billy Stewart, you gotta do the trilogy - "Cross My Heart" "Sitting In the Park" and then the one that started it all that you mentioned "I do love you!"
"I Only Meant To Wet My Feet" by the Whispers is another goodie.
SB - slow songs are just the grooviest creations. ahhh, those days of the infamous house parties. No, I don't remember them actually. That's just one of the ways I've been cheated in life... NOT BEING THERE (the others are being born into a world where taxes must be paid, and not being 5'8" what's up with that?).
By Thommygirl_70 (64.12.97.7) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 08:59 pm: |

By SB (205.186.130.223) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 09:39 pm: |
Wow Nish - Billy Stewart's "Sitting In The Park." That was a great song. I was trying to think of some of his songs - and the Manhattans, and Gene Chandler - but I couldn't think of any straight away. You say you were too young - but you seem to know the realeo/dealeo, as it pertains to classic slow songs from back in the day. You are hanging tough w/us oldies but goodies. Thanks for your input.
Thommygirl_70 - you help yourself. I love all the songs you mentioned. I used to love Aretha's - "Baby - Baby - Sweet Baby" & her "I Got To Find Me An Angel." I do declare! And Barbara's "Yes I'm Ready" (Are You Ready), was the song I was trying to think of when I thought of Hypnotized. We used to also slow dance off that one. And why was it, that we thought, we should sing along w/songs like that? LOL!
Don't even mention Curtis and the Impressions. Curtis is one of my all time favorite singers. I love(d) "I'm So Proud." That song used to almost make me cry it was so beautiful to me. Did you ever see the movie "Bronx Tale?" It came on a few years ago. It was about a young Italian guy growing up in the fifties that idolized this ganster. Robert DeNiro played his Pops. Anyway - this guy fell for this sista. They went to the same high school. When they first kissed - "I'm So Proud", was playing in the background. It was too much. Matter-of-fact - most of the soundtrack was soul.
And two more - "Reunited" & "Together" (Together baby - baby just you and me - ohhhhh - how happy we'll be yeaaaaahhhhhhh) LOL!
By Nish (66.119.34.39) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 10:31 pm: |
Gene Chandler's "It's A Groovy Situation" - always a goodie. The Five Stairsteps "Danger She's A Stranger." Yeaaaahhh, God those slow-midtempo grooves are something else.
If we cheat and go back in the way-day, I'm kind of sweet on "Heart to Heart" by The Dominoes featuring Clyde McPhatter with Little Esther and Harvey and Etta's "My Heart Cries." (Sounds just as good by the Romancers)
Also, "I Loved And I Lost" by the Impressions.

I think we should think about getting a petition together to send to Baby Face, Russell Simmons, Quincy Jones, and the like, about the lack of slow tunes in the music industry today. I am serious about that. Although I know we could never bring back those songs and days. And in this is why, I cut the date off at the early seventies. There may be some classics post 1975 or so but suffice it to say there wont be many. And that is too bad.
I also realize, that I need to get over it and stop crying in my beer about it. I had my day. Now it is my daughters day. But it is a shame that the slow songs of yesterday are gone. Yesterday, is also a lovely song. Even if some of the singers of today would remake or remix some of the olden golds they would not be the same. Some would still touch me but never in the same way so maybe the petition is not a good idea. I guess Ill just have to purchase those Slow Song Anthology CDs. And believe me Ive decided to do it. The music of today just does not do anything for me. I am not moved by any of it so Ill have to do like Curtis sung I Got To Suffer. (Suffer) LOL!
Can you imagine though, if someone was to remix Im Your Puppet? Or I Stand Accused? Not to mention, the countless others. Maybe there should be a show along the lines of Star Search to see who could sing the slow songs listed here the best.
Soul Sister you go girl. You just knocked my little list right out of the water. I dont remember all the ones you listed but I do remember many of them. I used to love Its Gonna Take A Miracle. So the name of that CD is The Soundtrack of my 60s life? Ill have to get it.
Eli I used to love When Something Is Wrong With My Baby. Wow!
douglasm how could we forget Oh What A Night? What a classic and a half.
R&B wrote: "HEY WELCOME SB, IM R&B AND I TOO HAIL FROM D.C., ARE YOU OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER THE HOWARD AND ALL THOSE GREAT SHOWS? IF SO THEN YOU CERTAINLY REMEMBER THE ETHICS AND[FAREWELL]ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SLOW JAMS TO COME OUT OF THE LATE SIXTIES.AGAIN WELCOME HOMEY!"
Hey R&B. My homeboy! How you be? Of course, I remember the Howard and the Ethics. Im not sure I remember the Farewell song though, unless I was to hear it. Can you hum a few bars? No seriously though Im sure I've heard the song but just cant put my finger on it now. Thanks for your warm welcome. I actually live in VA but claim DC and MD as my home 2. And, Marvin Gaye. LOL!
Hey KevGo. Ooooh I used to love Dont Turn Around and You & I, by Black Ivory. Thanks for reminding me of them. And MY God 5,10,15,20,25,30 Years of Love. (Arent we happy whoohoo)? I used to love that song! I forgot it was by the Presidents. Im like Handsome in that - I thought it was by the Delfonics. And man did we all used to slow dance off of that one. Yall are slaying me here.
Waltbaby I loved My Baby Loves Me, by M&TV. Wow!
Here are some others. Now you all have to forgive me for not putting the artist(s) name(s) by the songs. I know most of them but not all and I didnt want to error and get embarrassed like I would have w/the 5,10,15,20,25,30 song. LOL!
Stoned Soul Picnic
I Gotta Do Wrong
Tell It Like It Is
Please Please Please Please Please Please - Please - Dont Go. Remember when James Brown used to drop to one knee, and we knew then, that the cape was coming out to be draped over his shoulders? LOL!
Check It Out Tavares (sp?)
Youll Lose A Good Man (may be part of the stanza)
Knock On Wood
Not On The Outside
Keep On Pushing
Call Me Aretha
I Fooled You This Time
You Dont Have To Say You Love Me
Lean On Me
And I see no one got that Peaches and Herb hit. I finally thought of it. Remember Love Is Strange? And P&H used to chitchat during that song. Herb: Peaches how do you call your lover boy? I Win! LOL!

Didn't Mickey & Sylvia have a version of Love is Strange?
I did like Peaches & Herb's "United".

SB:
It's folks like yourself (and my heroes) that inspired me to start my own record label, serving music "for grown-ups" like ourselves. Don't give up the faith - the good stuff will come back with a vengence. I know of several young people (I'm 36 and I'm referring to those my age and younger) who are listening to the classics and wonder who the hell is doing this kind of music today. Between myself, Bobby Eli, Clay McMurray, Ralph Terrana (who is overseeing the career of a very good singer named Teddie Morrow), Weldon MacDougal and others who are still out there doing their thang as well as the young 'uns who have a clue, to paraphrase the late Sam Cooke, "Good music has GOT to make a comeback!"

Seems like I gotta do wrong is The Whispers
Love Is Strange was first done by Mickey & Silvia in the 50's. I liked the original DC girl's voice Peaches, Francine ? Didn't think the other voices messured up to hers.
HELLO SB;
I agree with you 100% I'm right there with you, lets bright back those sexy, hearwrenching, true to life SLOW love songs, PLEASE!!!!!!!
You got great taste and glad you'll be around here.
Hey! I use to go to the Howard too in the 1960's, all would stay at the Pitts, and go to a nearby chicken joint, then afterhours to Blly (The Fat Boy) Stewart's night club. What crazy, fun times it was! N.W. D.C. 15th. & Avenue U.
Its good to hear from you, I liked everything you had to say, its all good!!!!!!!

Handsome & Soul Sister - I may have heard Mickeys & Sylvias Love Is Strange, but it was P&H that I remember singing it in 1968. And of course their United, was bad too. U 2 sure knows your stuff. Handsome - you got all the names of these artist(s) down pat. Thank you for enlightening me on the different artists that sung the Same Old Songs. We know Berry & Motown would do that on principle. LOL!
KevGo thanks for your inspirational words. Like I said I had my day. I can console myself by listening to and remembering the slow songs of the past. And I even enjoy listening to some of the fast songs of the past. Ive always loved them both. But the slow ones are just in my blood. And I hope youre right about them making a comeback. Yet I just dont see them coming back in my lifetime because from what I can tell - most of the singers of today want to make fast songs and hip-hop type songs. They want all of those backup dancers in their videos and what not. They think that is where the money is. They dont think the percentages are there in them making slow numbers. And are they wrong? Do the folks that go to the concerts clubs and parties even care about romance and slow dancing? It does not appear to me they do. And the question begs to be answered why?
Folks can say what they will about Michael Jackson but that boy knows the real deal. He made sure he included a couple of slow numbers on every album he has ever made. He learned from his predecessors, and his Motown idols. He loved them and learned from them and he gave every slow song he has every sung his all.
If you say that the men you mentioned along with yourself are willing to try and bring them back then, Ill believe and have faith in you. I just dont know if I have faith in the up and comin singers. Maybe if a producer told some of these aspiring singers that they would have to sing some slow numbers just to break into the business that might work. But many of them that are out there today, want to be rappers and the like.
Thanks you Soul Sister for your warm welcome, and kind words. Please tell me the name of that 60s CD. I used to go to the Carter Baron and some of the clubs that were around back in the day. Remember the Mark 4 and the Classics? I cant think of all the others right now but I will. I remember going to see James Brown in 1968 at Howard University back during the riots. Some promoters brought him in just to try to calm folks down and he talked about it too. He was great and did the cape thing. Ill have to try to find you on the board when this thread is thru for I can tell you know your stuff, and we have a lot in common, as it pertains to our love for the good old days and songs. Plus - we used to think we were the hippest crowd. Forget the Detroit - LA, Chicago and NY crowds - 'cause we thought we were all that, and that they made those hit slow songs just for us to dance to. We need to start up a Nostalgia, thread. LOL!
Some more:
Place In The Sun
A Womans Got To Have It Bobby Womack and not Spike Lee. LOL!
Harry Hippie
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
I Cant Stop Loving You
Love Is A Hurting Thing
Too Weak To Fight Clarence Carter
Steal Away C. C.
Light My Fire
Dont Let The Green Grass Fool You
And how about Its A Thin Line Between Love and Hate. Whoa!

SB; Thats cool, but I'm not from DC but lived there for about 7 months, and been to the Howard quit a few times while on the chitlin'cucuit and one time with James Brown when I was mugged on the side of the theater for a portable record player that held the money JB had given me to pay the hotel and fare! JB had to send his man down to the precinct to retreive me & my girlfriend, demanded we came straight to the dressingroom for a lecture, boy, was that a trip!
In trouble with JB! Actually I'm from the NY-NJ area but consider myself a citizen of the world! (smile). DC was hip too, I dug WOOK, can't think of the name of the hip DJ but it will come to me.
A nostalgia thread sounds great to me~!!!!!!!

Wait a minute Soul Sister. You say - you know James Brown? Whatzzzup w/that? Are you a famous person? LOL! Did you sing w/him, and are you a singer? Do I know any of your records? Please tell me more.
I am originally for Birmingham, AL. So we do not want to go there, for I might mention my favorite group of all time. The Temptations. Did I say that? LOL. Now you know why I asked that folks picked their favorite song from the late sixties. LOL! If I would have included the early and middle sixties - I would have had to name every Tempts's song eva made - and the other Motown acts to boot. And we would be here the rest of the year. LOL!
My father was in the Military - and we moved here in 1967. We left to go to Germnay - but after that tour - we settled here - so yes - VA and the Metro area is my adopted home. But I was rooted in B'ham.
Holla back.

SB;
No I'm not a famous person or a singer (wish I did have a voice),when I was a teenager I ran away from home with The Jive Five, dated Deon Jackson, I know some of the artists from the curcuit, I was the common-law-wife of the late George "Smitty" Smith original lead singer of The Manhattans. Re; James Brown, I use to hang out at his house when he lived in N.Y., his son Teddy was my buddy. As you know other than JB's revue, there would be about 10 acts on a show at the theater "gigs", so you would meet alot of people that traveled in those circles. Today I'm with legedary jazz vocalist Jimmy Scott. I had good times & bad on the scene back then but wouldn't trade my experiences for anything today, I'm glad to have the good memories. I sometimes have mixed emotions about going back down memory lane but I'm pretty much an open book about my life, the good, the bad, & the ugly! I can amuse myself about it all today. I'll tell you, one of the nicest persons and best singers this world has ever know was Jackie Wilson. Tomorrow I'll be leaving for a "gig", we'll be gone for about a week, I plan to take my laptop wqith me, tho'I never use it, and time will be limited, I plan to try to keep up with Soulful Detroit and soulful everyone from everywhere!

My - my - my - Soul Sister. I hear 'ya!
I agree that "Memories", are one's riches. My grandmother taught me that. And the "Memories", song by the Tempts is one of my all time faves. I'll say!
Memories are partly why we're here right now posting on a message board. And there is no question, that we have to live w/the good - bad and ugly ones. But they are forever - and they can't be taken away from us. For if they were to be - then we would have no past. I used to have on my notebook in high school the phrase - "Don't let the past catch up with the present and interfere with the future." LOL! It is a good thing to remember - but I also belive, like the Indians did - that time - is nothing but a linear line. The past is a part of that line.
So treasure those memories. I wouldn't trade most of mine for all the money in the world. (Notice I said most of) You have a safe trip - and use that laptop - or sell it to me. LOL!
Anyway - some more:
"You've Got A Friend"
"Gee Whiz"
"Rainy Night In Georgia"
"See You When I Get There"
"You Send Me"
"I Say A Little Prayer"
"By The Time I Get To Phoinex"(sp?)
"Never My Love"
"Just Because"
"Sunny"
"Bring It On Home To Me"

Wise woman your grandmother was, I have to agree with all you said, and I've been there.
Thats life's path and the trials & tribulations we all go through in one way or another, beleive me I had plenty to deal with, still do. It wasn't always glamour & good times. (HA!), I except that, I do what I gotta do, and keep on keepin'on, simple as that even tho' the situations are very complex & complicated.
Thanks for the wisdom my friend. I dig the philosophy of Native Americans too, another passion of mine. Very spiritual people.
Memories by The Temps is a great record! I dig The Manhattans version too.

Soul Sister!!! Oh my gosh! Forgive me for gushing (I'm only 5 years removed from my teens, I still got a little bit of that wide-eyed excitement thing going on, I tries to suppress it, I tries!), but GEEEEEEEE you're so coooooool! What a neat neat life! :-)
I could just sit there and listen to your stories forever. And Deon Jackson - well you know I hold him in high esteem! We'd probably have a gush-fest if we just opened up a deon jackson thread.

I love about 99.9% of the picks I've seen...but I must add a couple of under-appreciated (IMHO) gems:
"Just For Your Love"...The Memphis Horns (later re-done by Earl Klugh). 8 little words in the verse and mellow horns...simplistic, beautiful, and meaningful.
"Show Me Some Emotion"...Webster Lewis
And two fave swing-out/mid-tempo grooves:
"Never Had A Love Like This"...Tavares
"Papillon (Hot Butterfly)" Bionic Boogie f/Luther Vandross (I love Chaka...but this is the definitive version !!)
By Nish (66.119.33.170) on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 - 11:25 pm: |
Well, thanks, S.S. I'm actually 22... but who's counting, I was counting 5 years from 18. I wish I were 62 actually, then that means I would have been born in 1940, and seen all that vibrant soul unfold before my very eyes.
The deal is this, I've been on SD for about... um... hmmm... 1 1/2 years... and over those 1 1/2 years I'm fairly predictable. I WILL gush over the following at fairly regular intervals: The Miracles, the need for more Claudette Robinson awareness, Deon Jackson and my big dream to see him perform one day, and the song "Ooh Baby Baby." (Hopefully fellow SDers kinda sorta like me to the extent that I can get away with this every once in awhile). But since this is a truly musical board with a great deal of expertise NOT coming from me, sometimes I try to curb my enthusiasm and my gush-factor and talk intelligently about the topic at hand when I can. A Deon Jackson thread is directly contradictory to this effort. :-)

S.S. - thanks for the gush pass. And I don't feel like an expert when I read the information rich posts here - but I can gradually change that by doing what this board allows me to do - go directly to the sources and ask questions. Blame the hep mommy for the musical taste. Not only does she give me her love and mother's prayers, but she exposed me to my music. She's gone above and beyond.
Stu - you sound like a recruiter for the coolest frat/sorority around. The official Lawyer of the Stubass Angels and Adjunct Angel... how's that? :-)
Oh yeah on the neverending late 60s-early 70s ballad list, I should add "God Bless Our Love," the haunting "Sippin' A Cup of Coffee" by the Ordells, and "Let's Make Love At Home Sometimes" by the Escorts. To take it back to 1958 and over to LA, I have to also go for "You're My Heart's Desire" by the Fabulous Pearls on the Dooto label.

Was the Ordells record a Philly thing??
The reason I ask is that Kenny Gamble, Herb Johnson and Jack Hart of the Trammps had a late fifties group called the Ordells.

SoulSister, you mentioned the 5 Stairsteps....Do you remember this song called "From Us to You" on the red Mainstream label? I believe Billy Preston played on this song, and may have had some other input on this record.
SB, I'm nobody famous, but I have always been into music. My parents used to sit me up on a stool when I was 3 years old and let me spin records for their house parties! While my siblings were sleep, I was at my first job (at 3 spinning records, ha ha). Although I couldn't read, I had this innate sense of playing the correct side of the 45. I love MUSIC, especially music from the 60's & 70's!

I would like to commend and thank you all for the the songs you listed. I will admit that either I don't remember some, or I've never heard them before, but for the most part - I was glad to be reminded of many. It is all good.
Handsome - you rock from what I can tell. Good googley moogley - but you do possess a vast amount of knowledge of the classic slow numbers from back in the good 'ole day. For your age - you've proved how amazing your ear is for real, true and great music, that we will always love and cherish
Nish - for someone that has not even lived a quarter of a century - you too have amazed me with your knowledge. You two should start your own website. LOL! And Soul Sister just wouldn't quit - would she? Kudos to you all.
Btw - when glancing at some of these Star Search type shows, and the junior one that was on last night, I noticed the younsters from ages 9 to 15 are willing to sing the slow tunes. One young girl last night - sang "To Sir With Love." So maybe there is hope. But writers need to write more slow numbers, and artists need to have the desire to sing them.
Below is UK website I found recently. Some may know of it. It has several video clips of some of our favorite sixties Motown groups. Most of the clips work - although - I just noticed the Tempts' "My Girl", clip can't be displayed. Shoot! It displayed when I last watched it on Sunday - so I may have to reboot. The last four are coming soon. And I think one or two others won't come up - but I'm sure they'll get it together soon, and hopefully.
I think we should hold on to this site - for they are supposed to be adding many more clips soon. Go to the bottom of the page and click on -"please click here."

I know you emailed me but for everyone's information "Main Line" was recorded by Black Ivory in 1977 & released on Buddah Records. It was one of the last records to feature Leroy Burgess (he left a year before but returned to record "Main Line" with Stuart Bascombe & Russell Patterson).

Handsome: Thanks for the correction ! I knew I had a 50/50 chance on that title. (LOL) I'm not sure if Merry Clayton was on background...but it was a male lead (Deon something ??)
I remember the 5 Stairsteps "From Us To You"...same album that contained "Pasado", which was later re-done by The Pockets. Wasn't that on George Harrison's "Dark Horse" label ??? I believe this was the last 5 Stairsteps LP...."The Invisible Man's Band" project came out a few years later...then Keni's solo work.
And...Black Ivory did do "Mainline". Great song with a killer 12" !!

Ok Handsome - help me out. Who sang - "It Feels So Good To Be Hurt By You?" (or something like that) And wasn't there a song called - "Pop Goes The Weasel?"
Did anyone mention:
"Anyday Now"
"Each Day I Cry A Little"
"It Hurts So Good" (Betty Wright - right?)
"Be For Real" (girrrrrl)
"Why Do Fools Fall In Love"

Handsome - what was that Ray - Goodman & Brown hit?
Some more.
"You've Been Making Out OK" - Al Green
"How Time Has Slipped Away" - Al Green - (Lordy be!)
"My God Is Real" - Al G. (Al was workin' it)
"Ain't Understanding Mellow" - Jerry Butler & (I forgot the wonderful female's name)
"Hey Love" (All of the Delfonics's collection) (I don't think they made one fast song) (I truly loved that group - for they were right up my alley)
"What's Come Over Me" (I do declare!)
"I Only Stopped" (So we could start all over again)
"Shoe - Shoe - Shine" (Used to cost a dime - a penny would buy me plenty) LOL!
"Float On" (LOL!)
"Just As Long As We Have Love" (We'll have it all)
"Let The Side Show Begin"
"Let's Just Kiss and Say Goodbye"
And last, and as we have found out - never least - "Standing Ovation." (OMG!) (One of my all time favorites) (I used to love that song)
Too - too much. Most of the slow songs that I love(d) and remember the most, are from the late sixties, although, I do know and love plenty from the early & middle sixties. Maybe I loved the ones from the late sixties because that is when I started slow dancing w/the guys, and fantasizing. LOL!
They did indeed have their classic place.

STUBASS - LOL! Well at least the ones you are referring to are closer to slow tunes than the fasties. They are not along the same lines as the "Funkadelics" or "Ohio Players" and etc., for instance. LOL!
And as long as one can do the Bop dance to 'em then - they're still safe.
I couldn't find that song I'm a hunting - but did find another Soul Patrol hookup.

Hey Soul Sister! I just had the 45. Don't know if it was just a single or what album it came from. Maybe the experts out there can help us. I do know the Burke brothers were a little older on this tune (it came out in the mid to late '70's, I believe).
