Soundtracks are one of my things. Isaac's Shaft, Marvin's Trouble Man, Paul Riser's Lady Sings the Blues.
Some genius from Laurie Johnson, Bernard Herrman, Quincy Jones, John Barry, Dave Grusin, Edwin Astley, Oliver Nelson, Lalo Schifrin and Ennio Morricone, to name but a few.

Thanks for mentioning two of my favorite film composers - Lalo Schifrin & the late Oliver Nelson.
These two men also wrote for television - Lalo composed the themes for "Mission: Impossible" and "Mannix" while Oliver did the music for "The Six Million Dollar Man."

My # 1 fave is Waiting to exhale.
I love the way Babyface married each performer with just the right song to fit their style relative to the plot of the film which is a rarity these days as most sound tracks are "politically" slapped together and have absolutely NOTHING to do with the film.
Some of my other faves are:
Shaft
Superfly
Oklahoma
Carousel
The king aand I
South Pacific
Jackie Brown
Grease
The five heartbeats

1Wicked you took the words right off my mouth LOL
"Magic Mona" by the great Phyllis Hyman on The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh is enough to put that album in the top category...
In the Blaxploitation genre I would have to add some great soundtracks like :
Dolemite
Stony Island
The Thing With Two Heads
Solomon King
Bare Knuckles
Shaft in Africa
The fantastic but very hard to find "Countdown At Kusini"
They Call Me Mr Tibbs
Shorty The Pimp
Friday Foster
and many many more
Outside of Blaxploitation I like Ennio Morricone ('Two Mules for Sister Sara' is one of my faves as well as 'Duck You Sucker')
Lalo Schifrin
Quincy Jones
Bernard Herrman (Taxi Driver is awesome)
Tom Waits (for the great One From The Heart)
John Barry
and a few others...

Gotta mention these films just
for the certain tracks they played.
Platton.
plays Wagners brilliant piece
"flight of the Valkyries".
Dumbo.
for the brilliant scene with the ever so street wise Crows getting Dumbo to fly.
I cannot at this moment think of the guys doing the voices but man, they are something else.
Does anyone remember Sisters Love appearing in
The Mack.
in a nightclub scene they are seen and heard singing "now is the time".
And the Three Degrees appearing in the great
film
The French Connection.
Cant remember the song.
Popeye Doyle(gene Hackman)
say no more.
Now a pearl&Dean intermission

That film with Lenny Henry was just a flimsy excuse to play some great records. I thought the the storyline was really disposable until I heard "Needle In A Haystack" being played!! LOL
I am trying to think of the name of that film, was it called "Route 66".

BankHouseDave: Michele Legrand (I believe he is French) wrote the "Love Theme" (and its variations) in Lady Sings The Blues--not Paul Riser.
Hey, don't you just love James Jamerson's bass in the three or four versions of the theme throughout the movie? He's not featured on the album, only in the movie. It's so soulful against the strings. (Gosh, I believe it's Jamerson..! Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.)

I'm new to the soundtrack thing, so my basis is limited, but so far my favorite has to be Marvin's "Trouble Man".. that's nothing short of a wonderful piece of work..
I also love Willie Hutch's work.. I don't have any of the individual soundtracks yet, but his "Very Best Of." collection is great.. "Brothers Gonna Work It Out", the Foxy Brown theme.. awesome stuff!
Chic did a soundtrack for a movie called "Soup For One" which I also like.. it's not a classic, but it's got some good stuff.. "Why" by Carly Simon, "Let's Go On Vacation" by Sister Sledge ..
By Handsome (170.118.157.134) on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 05:29 pm: |
Can Can: I have Soup for One on a CHIC compilation. Let's Go on Vacation was a cut too..it sounded different because I think Debbie (the oldest sister) was leading it. As a matter of fact, all the sisters took turns leading on that album, Love Somebody Today.

Can Can & Handsome:
Geez....I thought I was the only one who remembers Chic's "Soup For One" soundtrack! It was a pretty decent radio hit in my hometown (Rochester, NY).
"Trouble Man" was - and is - Marvin at his jazziest & coolest, the perfect bridge between "What's Going On' & "Let's Get It On". Marvin had always wanted to do a jazz album and this was his chance - and a great one at that.
It remains one of my most favorite albums.

There's this crazy movie that I just love. It's got a great cast. It has a great soundtrack. Nobody really is familiar with this movie other than me and a select few (that I know of). The cast consists of: Ben Affleck, Christina Ricci, Kate Hudson, Cortney Love, Janine Galafalo, Elvis Costello has cameo roll, to name a few. It takes place New Years Eve, Soho, NY City 1982. The name of it is "200 Cigarettes". I think it's a hoot! If you haven'tn already, you may want to check it out.
