I'm not tired yet and it seems everyone else on the forum went to sleep already! so I'm calling for some advice from the AngelDaddy himself, besides I can't think of anything else. Stubass can you recommend any decent neighborhoods in the L.A. area not far from Hollywood that are priced reasonable in the real astate/house market as we are going to be shopping around this August to check it out. Of course I'd love to live at the beach but I think that is way out of the quetion. So a SoulAngelSister needs a Angeldaddy to the rescue now that Angel Nancy's problems are solved. Do you have any suggestions?

SoulSister: I'm in L.A. too...and I'd be more than happy to help with a little advance leg work (if I can). Maybe you can contact me off list with your "particulars"...like how far from Hollywood would be acceptable, etc. As far as "reasonable" real estate in California...nothing really is unless you've owned a home in New York !! (LOL)

1Wicked; Thanks for offering your help, that was sweet of you. yes, I've heard that about the skyhigh pricing. Actually we have friends in L.A. too (nice to add you to the list!) who were going to take us around to check it out, so for now I just wanted to hear some names of places as close to Hollywood as possible. We'll get down to real business down the road a little. Thank You for your very generous offer, we may inquire more later. S.S.

STU, Vickie, & 1Wicked; Thank You all so much for this good advice! STU your info. is much helpful and the direction we'd probably prefer is west, tho we'll have to see, For now everything you mentioned gives us something to think about.
Leoscasino; Jimmy has been thinking of this for sometime now. He lived in Hollywood for about a year in '62 when he recorded the Ray Charles album. Now that he's older, has arthueritis, & pain from an old injury (the Sheraton accident), the Cleveland winters are gettting rougher & rougher on him, plus he/we have quite a few friends in the Hollywood area, Hancock Park, Beverly Hills, Altadena, etc..and there are more opportunities by being there when we are not on the road. Health wise, mental and spirit wise, I, and people who know Jimmy well, feel it would be better for him, he's feeling like it would be the best move for him all around too, so we'll see.
Thanks for everyone's input. S.S.

I've known so many people who lived in and around LA (including me).....who have fled back to the midwest with hands up over heads! Prices are outrageous, traffic a nightmare, crime high, smog bad, people flaky, drive by shootings (even in nice areas) more common by the day, bizarre things on the freeways (just watch TV). I had to take such a cut in lifestyle due to the high cost of everything. I thought, where's the dream? All that sunshine comes at a very high price. But, if you go, I wish you the very best. Stay safe and wear your seatbelt!

ONE THING ABOUT LOS ANGELES THOUGH!!!...THE HOUSES DON'T SHOW THE WEAR AND TEAR THAT THEY DO IN COLD WEATHER CITIES...WHERE THE ELEMENTS BEAT UP THE HOUSES!!!...EVEN IN SOUTH CENTRAL...THE HOUSES DON'T SHOW THAT WEATHER BEATEN LOOK...AND THE HOUSES APPEAR NICER...BUT THERE ARE *NO* BASEMENTS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!!!...IT IS AMAZING THOUGH...WITH THE HIGH HOUSING COSTS...PEOPLE FIND A WAY TO BUY THOSE HOMES WHICH AVERAGE GO FOR 200-300-THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!...MY TWO BEDROOM TOWNHOUSE HAS JUST BEEN ACESSED BY THE COUNTY AT 250-THOUSAND...BUT IF I SOLD IT...IT WOULD COST ME A LOT MORE TO REPLACE IT!!!...STU

Cars last a lot longer out here also. However, the cost of housing is rediculous.
Here on the Monterey Peninsula $300,000.00 to $400,000.00 is more the norm for just an average house. It's crazy.

Not to mention the weather Stu. Which is probably what keeps me here.

Lakeveiw; I'm well aware of all those problems in L.A. and its made me hesitate before, but its probably the only place Jimmy would even considering moving to and the way certain people pressure the poor man here, I swear I think it will kill him if he doesn't get out of here again. There is so much going on behind the scenes here I truly worry for his health and peace of mind. Thats just one more part to the story, personally I'd prefer an island like Nancy but that also is expensive. Like I said we have some pretty good friends in LA too. But I miss my friends in NY & NJ area. Jimmy would never move back to NJ again. If I had my wish it would be near a beach(smiling just thinking about it!). Thanks for your input Lakeview (I grew up on a lake, I guess thats why I love the water so much & the veiws).
STU and Ralph; I appreciate your input too, its been very informative, thanks much!

Soul sister,
Here is something to think about. You might want to consider moving to the Monterey area. As I said the cost of buying a house is a joke but apartments aren't all that expensive. Not to take anything away from Southern California but the pace is very laid back and beautiful here. Since you like the water you will be surrounded by it because Monterey is on a peninsula. The crime rate is low and there are barely no traffic hassles. The clmate is moderate. Kind of like Fall all year round. Think about it.
By Lakeview (65.238.140.178) on Sunday, June 15, 2003 - 07:55 pm: |
Monterey sounds heavenly. I have never been there, but, the description sounds very inviting. I could not afford to live in So. Cal. and had to move back to the mid-west. The weather is great, but, there are so many other things that took away.....like the cost of living. Has anyone ever been to LaJolla? That's my idea of heaven.....unfortunately I couldn't afford to live in my car there. If someone has friends in the area (I didn't) it would no doubt be a big plus and a real advantage to the moving process. If you go.....think of me buried in snow come January.

LAKEVIEW!!!...I LIVED IN LA JOLLA COLONY DURING THE MID-LATE 80'S...AND YOU ARE RIGHT!!!...ANYONE WHO EVER CAME TO VISIT ME DOWN THERE USUALLY SAID THAT IT'S THE ONE PLACE THAT THEY'D REALLY LIKE TO LIVE!!!...THAT IS...IF YOU CAN TAKE THE "BORING" WEATHER...69 DEGREES VIRTUALLY YEAR ROUND!!!...LA JOLLA IS VERY EXPENSIVE...BUT THE "COLONY" RIGHT OFF THE 5 FREEWAY...IS ABOUT 2 MILES INLAND...AND WHILE VERY NICE...MORE AFFORDABLE!!!...ALSO... THE AREAS OF DEL MAR...CARLSBAD...AND PACIFIC BEACH ARE REAL NICE!!!...STU

Ralph, I've seen some of Monterey on T.V. of quaint, charming cottages with beautiful grounds & veiws, it looked very inviting but if we do make the move, Jimmy will want to be closer to his friends and the happenings. He's determinded to buy a little house and Monterey is more than he intends on spending, again we'll just have to see. I'd like to be somewhere I could swim just about any time. Of course its all just a possibility right now until we check it out in person. You, Lakeveiw, & Stu, have all, giving us plenty of food for thought, thanks again guys!

Soul Sister: For starters, try www.homestore.com
There you can check out a number of properties and even take a "virtual tour" of some. That could save you a few steps in the process.....
