I remember going to a concert where Jeff Lorber's group featuring Karen White and I believe Michael Jeffries on vocals was performing. As soon as the show started I remembered being so impressed with the drummer(Bruce Carter formerly with Pleasure) that he kept my attention the rest of the show. He really drove that band, yet was not overpowering everyone else. Does he play with anyone now? I had heard that he might have been playing with Maxwell. I also like Dennis Chambers.

I've seen Idris Muhammad and Winard Harper live at separate jazz concerts - they were both awesome.

Of all the drummers I've seen, no one was as impressive as Max Roach.
His demonstration of control, taste, power and swing was amazing.
I've seen Max three times and each time I left the concert shaking my head, overwhelmed.
He doesn't play the drums, they are an extension of his soul. Only Masters have that.

FYI.. Idris Muhammad used to be known as Leo Morris when he played with the Impressions.
He had a very unusual way of holding his sticks as I remember.

Jimmy told me these are his all-time favorite drummers:

While singing in the 40s with Lester Young's Big Band full of jazz'z best, it was-Papa Jo Jones.

While singing with Lionel Hampton's Big Band in the early 50s, it was-Fox.

Today despite all the great jazz drummers he's worked with he still prefers his own drummer as the best-Dwayne "Cook"Broadnax.

How about Clayton Cameron...the incredible, astounding jazz drummer that usually plays with Tony Bennett these days. I've seen Tony 3 times, and it was Clayton's solos that brought the house down each time.

I also have a soft spot for Ronnie Tutt, who was Elvis' touring drummer in the 70's...he had some great moments.

I would second Billy Cobhan during the "MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA" day as well Keith Moon and Carl Palmer. Speaking of drummers did any of you ever hear of a local guy named Gene Stewart (I may be misspelling his name)? I remember him as a good jazz drummer during the late sixties and early seventies.

I was really impressed watching 'Tain Watts (first name Jeff??) at a club here in Toronto a few summers ago. I saw both Idris Muhammad and Dennis Chambers at the Montreal Jazz Fest a few years ago ('98?)- Idris was with Joe Lovano, Dennis with Mike Stern. They were good shows, but I've heard recordings of them which I liked much better (Idris' version of Power of Soul, and live P-Funk tape with Dennis Chambers f'rinstance). I liked
Mike Clark when I saw him a few years ago, too. Alongside them is a local (to T.O.) drummer whose name I don't know but he floors me every time I see him. Anyone around here who's seen him agrees.

Hi boys & Girls

If you want to check out something REALLY different, look up Kenwood Dennard. This guy plays KEYBOARDS and DRUMS at the same time!!!

It is really amazing to see!!!

Currently he is playing with Maceo Parker of James Brown fame.

I dont think anyone else is doing that!!

Hi Stephanie!!

Now, Phil Collins is an unbelievable drummer. His concerts have generated millions and people love his songs. A lot of people pick with him but they dont know that he played with Brand X, which is incredible.

He just decided to also play piano and sing. This must have been a plesant surprise, because it made him into the star that he is today. But he still plays drums at his concerts and make no mistake, he kicks ass!!

Case in point, There is Buddy Rich tribute tape out that showcases Dennis Chambers and Steve Smith as well as Phil. But guess which drummer Buddy Rich chose to produce a CD for himself before he unfortunately passed away? Phil Collins. Not only that, but Phil plays the longest on this tape, and does a great job. He didnt overplay or throw his sticks up in the air and do acrobatics, but he got a standing ovation.

That is whats called a good concert drummer. To me anyways...

I Saw Jackie Wilson live
at an all-nighter around 1975 and not sure if the drummer that was in the band was the same as the drummer that features in the superb track of
"Soul Galore".

The drummer flies in as soon as the needle hits the disc and man does he go to town and back with some unbelievable work with those sticks.

As usual Jackie is flying along with it but unleashes those operetic type vocal chords all over the place.

"What she's got
she was born with

Man
if you know what I mean.

you should see the shape
of my baby
curves going everywhere,

When I think about all
of my blessings

I'm richer than a millionaire

aaagh,
but I'll make it plain

No one comes before
SOUL GALORE"

backed up all the way with one of the most demanding back-ups ever as they all hit it fast and furious with that Drummer still going head for leather.

Does anyone know who it is?

Another drummer is the guy on
Carl Douglas's stomping uk cut on the
GO label
titled
"Something for Nothing"
the band being
The Big Stampede.

I remember seeing one of Junior Walkers
many live appearances over here at the all-nighters and am sure that he was using 2 sets of drums with 2 drummers behind him with his son playing on a set if I remember correctly.

Mel;
The drummer you saw was Jackie's long time drummer Jimmy Smith. I háven't seen him since early 70's when I last saw Jackie alive, but thats his picture in Tony Douglas' book that I took of him at the backstage door of the Brooklyn Paramount before we all went in, it was not at the Apollo as book states. Jimmy didn't know how to get in touch with me. I heard he lives in Virginia(?). I would love to talk with him again too.
