Thats one of the downfalls of the great city of L.A. and what I dislike most a crowded freeway! Ugh!!!
WOW! Angelmaster can make dreams of owning new Hondas come true, must be a good feeling Angelman! If Jimmy & I move to L.A. and we're in the market for a new car we'll have to look up the STUBASS Hondas, they must be the safest car on the road coming from an Angelman.

John,
I will of heard it but a long time ago,
and will have it on tape definatly.
At the moment a mate of mine has my complete listings etc of over around 15,000 sounds on tape
which this track will be in.

I know this track was released on the flip side to "for your love I'll die"
by Sammy Turner on the
20th Century Label(no.610).

I have been very lucky over the years to be with mates that have had a lot of the acetates mentioned in one form or another.

But I am talking a few years indeed.
What I would do was tape everything I was listening to every A and B side.

Obviously over the years some are total crap
but its good to dig a tape out from an era and listen to what then was a gem but now sounds dire.

I will have a look to see if I can dig it out,
but with tapes be it all numbered etc I am lost without my 2 books with all relevent info.

I Have a vast amount of music in some form or other and as you know this kind of stuff is your forte.

I wouldnt list a sound if I didnt have it in one form or another.

Off hand wasnt there a Motown 45 by Sammy Turner called "only you".

Sorry if I am mis-leading you John,
but I would never print anything just on chance.

Anyway looking at the Label
it may well be a 70's cut which is not my thing at all.
Then again it might not.

MEL.

Hey John,
now I see why you are dubious regards the Sammy Turner cut we are talking about.
After the last couple of hours of looking through some material I cant even see his name even mentioned anywhere let alone on disc.

Mind you I have a lot more material where it may be in ,but I have it listed and catalogued as I put above.
As well as that acetate I also have another plus various 45s on Big Top,Verve Motown and the 20th century cut.
It also states in brackets by his name the Twisters.

The guy that has my full data etc is in the states on a record buying trip,so unless a miracle happens I will have to wait till he returns.

I have a lot of Hitsville and the various related acetates to do with Motown in picture form,
maybe I may find a clue in them.
Anyway John,
my head is bad enough with the rare soul 45s never mind all this mate.
Will let you know if anything comes up.

many thanks
mel.

ps
Maybe Davie Gordon or someone might have some info but I know your a top boy regards this material.

Mel, John

That Sammy Turner track is on 20TH Century Fox
(not 20TH Century) - it's from '65 - recorded between the time he left Motown and signed to
Verve. If you want more info I'll dig out the exact details tomorrow.

A House is not a Motel - Love. Arthur Lee finally left LA and is touring the UK. We're going to see him at the Canterbury Festival, where he is performing the whole Forever Changes set, complete with string and brass ensemble. Not soulful Detroit, I grant you, but the only other 60s African American psychedelic mover as big as (or more so) as (than) Jimi Hendrix. Listen to that album again, I urge you and give props. It was simply the best psychedelic album. They're locking them up today. They're throwing away the key. I wonder who it'll be tomorrow, you or me.

"Sugar Shack" was recorded by Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs on Dot Records, a #1 hit in 1963.

BankHouseDave:
Amen regarding Arthur Lee & Love. I read in a review in Mojo regarding his latest round of gigs & see that he's performing the entire "Forever Changes" LP live. That album reflected the best that the west coast had to offer in the lines of rock, folk & pop with classical florishes. Arthur Lee showed the world the beauty he had to offer through his music & saw Hendrix, Buddy Miles (Electric Flag) & Hugh Masekela as comrades in arms in the expansion/growth of pop music.

Nice to see Love getting a name check - I've got
through I think about eight copies of the "Forever
Changes" album over the years - that band had SO
many great things about it - John Echols' lead
guitar work on the album is extraordinary.

Anyone who hasn't heard it should try to - the
recent CD expanded version ( with extra tracks)
is probably the best it's ever sounded.
