THE SHOW MUST GO ON - ABC RECORDS: Produced by group member Lawrence Payton, the Four Tops' The Show Must Go On was the follow-up to their Catfish album, which included the Top Seven R&B/pop-charting title track single. The first single, "The Show Must Go On," an energetic ode to the age-old showbiz ethic, was a disco hit and managed to chart R&B in late 1977. The LP's standout tracks, though, came courtesy of fellow Detroiter Ronnie McNeir. The two-tempoed "I Can't Live Without You" is a grand showcase for Levi Stubbs' plaintive vocals. The gospel-ish/chunky, clavinet-laced "You'll Never Find a Better Man" did much to bolster the group's well-liked, regular-guy appeal. In later years, McNeir became the group's touring musical director and appeared on the group's 1995 Motown album Christmas Here With You. Other highlights are the message-oriented cuts "See the Real Me," "Love Is a Joy," and the baritone-led ballad "Candy."

I remember this album. I had it on 8-track. It is one of the few Four Top albums that has not been reissued to C.D. I don't play the tape in fear that it might break and I'll never be able to hear it again. Fortunately, last summer I found a copy of this album on vinyl. I didn't hesitate to pick it up, along with another Four Top's album (AT THE TOP), which also has not been reissued to C.D. It is ashamed ABC Records did not promote these albums well in 1977 and 1978 respectively. They both could have scored some hit songs for Levi and the Four Tops, especially the singles- I can't live without you(from The Show Must Go On) and H.E.L.P (from At The Top)

At The Top had some good songs. It was done in Philly and featured songs by Ron Tyson, Norman Harris and others. I especially liked "Seclusion," "Just In Time" and "H.E.L.P." from that one.

David,

"Unwanted Company" was recorded by Jeannie Reynolds (LJ's sister) on Casablanca.

I'll dig out my Bridges-Knight-Eaton listings
which should have most of the info. you're after
