Davie, first I tried to copy and paste the Debbie Dean link but it did not work. Then I typed the complete adress, but it was still impossible to link to that specific page. Every time I made a test, I was re-directed to a blank All Music Guide page. I don't know how that works, but is it possible that something is encoded that does not allow to link to hers or any other artist page?
In any case, All Music Guide is:
http://www.allmusic.com/
Then people must type "Debbie Dean".

Edgar,

Thanks for the link! I learned from the link that Debbie has passed away, and that it happened near where I live. If only I had known, I might have tried to look her up.

It just seems like yesterday that I thought Debbie Dean was the last word in sex appeal. This was back in 1961 at Hitsville.

The comical part is that my taste has changed such that if I had met with her near the time of her passing, I would probably still feel the same.

I was right there when those producers out on the West coast sent the master for "Every Little Bit Hurts" (Sung by Brenda Holloway) to Berry. It seemed that he had just made some kind of a deal with them, and this was their first submission for his approval.

Berry was utterly blown away by the breathtaking quality of this production. He had a special meeting in his office with all the producers and songwriters and demanded to know why Hitsville was unable to generate such a fresh, clear, utterly professional sound quality with their productions.

It would seem that he got nothing in the way of an answer to this question that satisfied him, so he did something that he rarely did: He called me, Mike McLean, the outspoken genius nerd, up to the meeting. He asked me for my opinion as to why this new tune sounded so fantastic. I expressed my view to the group:

"The musical arrangment is very simple. This allows all the parts to be heard clearly. The equalization of the various musical instruments is very well done, without excess compression and limiting, so that they all sound natural and clear. All of this attention to detail adds up to a beautiful recording."

Berry asked me what should be done to make it possible for our producers to create sound like this. Typically, I said that more education of the musical people would lead them to turn down the monitor volume and concentrate more on the quality of sound, as opposed to the pounding, driving FEEL of the sound. "You can't get more art out of a tune by trying to cram more into it" was about what I said.

Berry looked around the room and a cold look came over his face. He thanked me and sent me on my way.

From that point on, the producers were more aloof toward me.

It's the time old story. In an organization, politics is an important consideration. One who is honest and accurate is a very poor second runner.

I agree that Brenda Holloway is a fantastic artist. Her physical charms are ample, but with a soulful voice like she expressed in "Every Little Bit Hurts," I would gladly lust after her even if she looked like a human sized black widow spider. I would simply put a paper bag over her head, push back four of the legs, and whisper sweet nothings into her ears (plural: two on each side of the eight eyes.)

I loves me foward.

The best!

The Mengelberg NYP perfromance! I am floating!

More threats from the original score.

I am but a dog, because I love Richard Strauss.
