THE MOTOWN STORY 5 LP BOX SET was always Pride of My Record collection until I sold all my records and went over to CD!

Every day on Auction Sites You see pelople bidding for copies, why has it never been released on CD? - those interviews were something to treasure of our Fave Artists between the tracks.

Still would also like to see THE FOUR TOPS - ON BROADWAY ON CD

John

There were two different versions of the Motown Story. The first was the better version. Voiced by Charlie Van-Dyke and produced by Bill Drake/History Of Rock & Roll. It was a terrific overview of what Motown was all about. The production values were flawless. The second, newer version was produced by Motown and was voiced by Lionel Ritchie. I think that one is available on CD. If you are looking for the real Motown story, make sure you get the original box set. The newer version is a little more contemparary with some of the later music but the earlier version is far superior in all ways musical.(I have both and only play the Drake version when the mood hits)

Thanks Keith, I have nothing to play records on, I was asking why it has never been released on CD as a "Collectors" item.

Cheers John

Bob Marvin,

I have a bizarre copy of the original LP set that I picked up when it was released in 1971. At the time, I was in charge of technical engineering at Motown in Detroit, and I received this copy as part of an automatic distribution to "VIP's" on the staff.

It is bizarre in that it was not properly packed at the factory: Of the five LP discs, I have "Vol. 1," TWO "Vol. 2," NO "Vol. 3," "Vol. 4," and "Vol. 5." The discs are in immaculate condition, as is the booklet. The box is a little beat up, but not bad.

I have a problem: You state above that this version was produced by Bill Drake/History of Rock & Roll. As you can see below, the credits are shown on my copy of the album as produced not by Bill Drake, but by Bill Watson/History of Rock 'N Roll.

LP Jacket for Vol. 1

This bizarre copy already is haunted with the first error (two Vol. 2, no Vol. 3) that I mentioned. Could this Drake/Watson issue be a flaw that was corrected later by the factory, or did your memory fail you?

John Barry Sheffield,

I was going to offer to make you a CD of this album, but sadly, I have no Vol. 3 in the set.

That is such a shame McleanTech! and was a kind thought, I just wish I had never sold my MOTOWN BOX SET, okay I have the CD sets which where released covering the years called HITSVILLE - I think? - but it was the interviews that made this set so Special and the opening the cuts of music and that deep voice - MOTOWN - This is the motown Sound.

Wow! if I have such memoeries and such enjoyment from MOTOWN what was it like working for them, gee!

Thanks John

John Barry Sheffield,

If you use the SEARCH FORUM function, with the search term being posts by M.McLeanTech, you will find a vast number of posts that I have put up in the past.

By the time you are finished spending six hours reading all of this material, you should have an answer to your question:
"....what was it like working for them, gee!"

Ritchie and guys,

There's an interesting cd on ebay at the moment called 'In The Snakepit' and, as you can guess, is a collection of Motown instrumentals. Has anyone heard of it?
