Hey All...
I took the bus to New York from Toronto this weekend, as I had an audition for theatre school. As soon as I walked out of the audition, I heard this tinny guitar and this earthy, down home voice singing "Kansas City". Well..I thought I would go and listen to a little bit of the song and leave...and I actually ended up staying for about 4 hours!! We were singing the Temps, the Tops, Sam Cooke, Moonglows....everyone.
The man who was playing the guitar was named Johnny, and he was saying that he wrote some songs back in the day for Ike and Tina, and some also for The Staple Singers. However, the guy that I most enjoyed singing with was B.J. Jones, who was a member of Rick Shephard's Drifters, and also sang on some albums with the Persuasions. He is currently with a group called the Doves. This man is a true BASS....and we loved singing with each other...
Here I was, a skinny little white boy, at least 40 years younger than most of the cats sitting there, and we were singing and playing together as if we had just come out of high school together....it was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had, and I went back the next day as well and there was more of the same.
Anyone know or heard of B.J. Jones? He's on the Zappa album the Persuasions did....
Peace...MichaelOH

Michael:
Ashford & Simpson's club the Sugah Bar serves chicken & waffles but I hear they charge at least twenty bucks (ouch!). We may want to hit Wells' Restaurant in Harlem (great food & affordable, too!).
Looking forward to your next visit!
