My appetite is whetted again for a book of
Motown and the main labels album covers.
I just checked out of the library a book of
45 rpm picture sleeves. It covers all genres of
music, including the picture sleeve for "My Girl"
with the Temptations looking so sharp. This book
could have front and back covers of the main,Motown,Tamla,Gordy,Soul & V.I.P.labels from
the first album recorded at Hitsville,to the last.
When I bought my first Motown LP's,I really enjoyed the inner sleeves, which displayed other
Lps out at that time.I would certainly lay down some $$$$ for a book like this.I know this has been discussed before, but I'm anxious.

THAT WOULD BE COOL,I HAVE SEEN MOTOWN LABELS IN OTHER BOOKS BUT NOT ONE EXCLUSIVELY FOR MOTOWN ITSELF,THERE ARE ALBUM JACKETS THAT I HAVEN'T SEEN IN YEAR PLUS ALOT THAT I'VE NEVER SEEN,A BOOK COVERING THAT WOULD BE GREAT!

Surely we can do it ourselves on soulful detroit...

All we need is a scanner and a knowledge of how to "Get Fancy"

It would also be great to have them on-line. Sometimes I need an album cover to upload on the site Rate Your Music - http://www.rateyourmusic.com. - and it's so hard to find some covers. Recently I searched and searched but could not find Stevie Wonder's "Tribute to Uncle Ray" and "Stevie At the Beach", not to mention Rose Banks' "Rose". Sometimes scans are posted on Ebay, but the quality is less than poor.
And a book would be just heaven.

Hello everyone,

I agree that there should be a book on Motown LP covers. Some of them were really nice, others were like "what was the artist department thinking". That would be interesting to read the concepts behind creating these covers.

Peace!

This is something I have wanted to do a long time. About ten years ago I was in contact with a publisher here in Sweden about a project like this. The idea was to publish my Motown/Detroit discography with a lot of pictures of all the different types of 45 sleeves, LP inner sleeves and album covers. That never happened. They were not interested enough. I have got hundreds, thousands of nice stuff to put in a book!

For instance this is an album that was not released in the US

JRW.jpg

it was supposed to be Soul S6-742. It was released in a few European countries 1974. Clarence Paul produced the album and wrote tree songs on it. Stevie Wonder is playing harmonica solos on two tracks.

and heres another nice picture sleeve of a very young Eddie Holland

Lars,
Once again, you amaze me with your collection. Please don't let me near your house - you'll need an order of protection to keep me away from your collection! :)

Common:
Eddie Holland was marketed as Motown's answer to Jackie Wilson because his range and style was similar to Mr. Excitement's (as well as his good looks & wardrobe!). His big hits were "Jamie" and "Leaving Here."
However, it was stage fright that kept Eddie from being a live performer so he, along with his brother Brian and best friend Lamont Dozier settled into songwriting and production.
The rest is history.

I hear you loud and clear KevGo!! LOL!! I have a nifty collection but that just takes the cake right there..Between LG and my good friend George who showed me a Carl Anderson album produced by Stevie Wonder...I have seen some good stuff this week. That Jr. Walker lp is pretty sweet too...what album is that? is that a uk/japan release?

Motown covers are awesome period, there should be a book on just the covers alone..especially the Stevie Wonder albums..The Temptations lp's in the early days are soooo clean.. Those cats were really decked out,esp with my main man David Ruffin with a cape and top hat!! Classic!!

KevGo: Now that I think about it, it was Nelson's book. I don't have BG's yet but trying to get his book, maybe through some used bookstores in the city. Sometimes, ebay can be an expensive alternative.

Vickie: I love looking at the old LPs as well.

My favorite ones are Marvin & Tammi's "United"(of course!), Jimmmy & David's "I Am My Brother's Keeper"(both of them were such cute kids!), The Temptations Sing Smokey, Marvin's "I Want You", etc. I also enjoy looking at the inner sleeves to see the different Motown LP covers on the various labels. Very smart promotional tool by Motown I'd say.

Peace!

Many thanks my friends for all kind words,

If you look close on this release from September 1979 youll see an album name and number

Ego.jpg

the "Love Man" album T8-369M1 by Marvin Gaye was supposed to be released late 1979. It was canned! Worldwide. Some of the tracks were later remixed, renamed and released on his last Tamla album "In Our Lifetime". This is the UK Tamla-Motown STML 12126 back cover I got from Gordon Frewin, he was then Motown Label Manager at EMI in London (the US cover I got from Motown US is on the wall in my working room at the radio station, in a nice frame!)

I even heard some of the album tracks outside the Wembley Arena late a dark autumn evening in London when I was there the same year for a radio interview with Stevie Wonder. Some Marvin Gaye hangarounds/managers took me inside a limousine and played songs from the soon to be released Love Man album but the atmosphere became a bit to scary for me so I left. Took a cab to the city. They still owe me £20 I paid for that Marvin Gaye interview I never saw them again but it was very close I met Marvin!

I'm enjoying this thread immensely! keep the images coming.

The timeline history of Motown that frustrates me the most is the period when Andre Harrell was in charge. So many singles came out with albums to follow that never materialized. Valerie George, The Whitehead Brothers, LaDae, and Jason Weaver were but a few of many. The album covers were published in Billboard but the albums(CD's)never came out.

The Sophisticated Soul LP did have a great cover and the Marvelettes were always my favorite Motown group.

My favorite cover was the "Playboy" album cover. That was the ONLY cover that ever depicted all five Marvelettes. They were upstairs in little windows looking down a slick looking guy standing at a door which had a sign, "Marvelettes Not Home" hanging on the door knob with a piece of string. Classic!

Choker Campbell, Hits of the Sixties. The best ever. I also recall a great one from a German compilation, it had a map of SE Michigan on the front, this was 25 years ago however and John Lester bought it.....do you still have it old timer? Keith

-Choker Campbell "Hits of the Sixties" (Cool mixed media collage)
-The Supremes "Sing HDH" (Diana pouts!)
-I hear a Symphony (This one's kinda dreamy)
-Marvelettes' "Sophisticated Soul" and "The
Marvelettes (1967) (Great individual pics)
-Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta ('74)
-Diana Ross (1970, she looks like a waif on the front and looks glamorous on the back.)
-Diana Ross "Touch Me in The Morning" (Ross was pregant, and the overexposure of her in the pool made her look radiant.)
-Jackson Five "ABC" (For its collage), "Goin' Back To Indiana" (very cartoony & fun)
Motown Photographer Jim Britt shot some great LP covers in the 70's.
-Marvin Gaye "What's Goin' On?" (He looks so pensive in the rain.)
-Marvin Gaye "I Want You" (Great Ernie Barnes painting also used in opening theme for "Good Times TV sitcom.)

There's so many, I could be late for work, yikess!

Great thread! Hi WonderB, glad to see you here in soulfuldetroit! I had no idea about a J5 lp recorded in Japan! A couple of years ago I bought 'Stand', a Pickwick reissue of 'Going Back To Indianna' (thanks soulfuldetroiters who told me this at the time!)- anyhow, I once heard a great & really raw sounding live J5 lp in a record store but I didn't see the cover... I thought I'd found it but the song I thought I heard was a bass-heavy live version of ABC not on the 'Going Back To Indianna' so maybe this finally answers this question...
As for fave Motown covers, I want to mention 2 of mine I was surprised not to have seen mentioned in this thread- the Live In Paris lp (the lettering, the pics, etc) and the lp 'That Motown Sound' (which I was thrilled to have found recently for a fifth of what the boot cd cost me a while ago). I love 'em both & if I had a scanner I'd upload the 'Motown Sound' cover to this thread so we could all enjoy it...
A book of Motown covers would be great, I've see plenty of books of other lp covers. Is permission required to publish photos of lp covers? Is there a time limit on the neccessity of said permission? I'd be surprised, given the esoteric content of some of these books and the surely difficult process of finding applicable parties to authorize such releases. One could round out the book with foreign pressings (with significantly different covers) and the like.
Finally, I took a peek at a book I have called 'The Motown Album' (1990, St Martin's Press)- and there are very few album covers in there at all! Go figure...

Wonder B,

Here's a short scanning lesson for you to upload pictures on SD.

1. Scan.
2. Reduce the size of the image to 550 pixels or less. I use a program called ACDSee to do this.
3. Use the brightness/contrast/gamma section to make the picture as clear as possible.
4. Use sharpness if necessary.
5. Check out so the picture is smaller than 50k. (This is the hardest part!)
6. Read more in the Get fancy section.
7. Upload

Here are some different designs of Motown 45 sleeves

Tamla had a special design:

TamCov.jpg

Motown also had a special design in the same style:

MotCov.jpg

This Motown sleeve was also made in blue
the below design is the most common and was used for many years. It was made in many different colors and many different albums were displayed:

The Motown Story was also promoted for many years:

I see Harry wanted to contact LG, I hope Harry can do something with this idea. I'm sure there is a market for Motown Album covers. I would also like to see, the various labels from around the world. In Canada, for a while, motown was released on the label Tamla Motown, which was white with a black top with some blue and red. I always really liked that label, but was amazed when I actually saw "Motown" actually had a motown label, a Gordy labe, and Soul label etc.

Likewise, it's strange for us who grew up in the States to see the foreign-issue labels. The Motown, Tamla, Gordy, Soul and VIP label designs are part of our collective memory. Who doesn't remember repeatedly coming across those labels as we thumbed through the 45s in the record stores? Seems like the stores always mostly carried Motown products! And, I must have thrown away dozens of those printed 45 sleeves when I was a kid. All I wanted was the wax.

The first time I saw the Tamla Motown logo was over 30 years ago - my neighbor had a UK copy of the Supremes Live On The Talk Of The Town album. The label (black background with the Tamla Motown logo in silver)looked like it was a classical album, not an R&B record. The label was definitely unique in its way.

As for the colorful labels we had in the USA, my friend Fury 13 said it best - they have become part of our collective memory.

Hey, Fury - I've got some old Motown sleeves if you want any.... :)

Heres another slightly different single sleeve design from 1971

In the UK and Sweden this was the Tamla-Motown sleeve design for many years! In later years the color changed to gray/green, but it was the same layout.

and also, many of the single releases had pic sleeves in the UK and Sweden but not in the USA. This is the Mary Wells Atco single with picture sleeve. It was released on Atlantic in Sweden.

Here is a sleeve for a 45 that I thought was super hot at the time it was released. Berry seemed to be going off into a very different direction then he had been going with things like "Buy, buy Baby" with Mary Wells.

Never heard of Debbie Dean before... info on her, please. What kind of material did she sing?

I am no expert, but I would describe it as a woman with a sex-kitten white voice (a little like Ann-Margaret) singing material written by the regular Motown songwriters and played by the Funk Brothers.

Only thing I know is that she wrote songs with Deke Richards ("I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing", for example.) There is another photo of Debbie with Deke and Martha, I think. Look for Deke's threads.

I know you mean well Edgar but info from other sites should only come in thru links.

I will ask Ralph to delete this as we have had difficulties with this guy before (AH and other aliases).

Please type in the link Edgar as it is worth reading.

Thanks
David

This one's becoming a bit of a handful to scroll thru - I'll set up Motown LP covers 2 as the
continuation thread
