Let's continue this conversation over here. I'm sure this topic will not end for quite some time.

Thank you, Kev. The C-64 was having trouble loading the thread.

I asked earlier, and I'm going to re-phrase my question. What are the legal implications of Mary's owning the name "Supremes"? This appears to be a major part of her arguement, the "preserving" of the Supreme's legesy.

Douglasm:

I believe that if Mary gets the right to the name she will be able to fight what she considers to be the counterfeit groups and assure that when you go to see "The Supremes" you are getting members. Motown has been lax in stopping the groups and the burden has fallen to Mary to do it over the years. Unfortunately, when this discussion topic comes up it is assumed that Mary is only fighting Scherrie & Lynda with FLOS or Kaaren Ragland's group Sounds of the Supremes and the conversation gets circular and heated. I was told by someone who works with Mary that at one point in the mid 90's there were 11 different female groups throughout the world using the Supremes!!! This certainly dilutes the name.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Shawn1b (171.75.238.203) on Friday, June 06, 2003 - 11:23 pm:

I think Mary should have the rights to the name The Supremes! I also think Scherrie and Lynda should only be able to call themselves Former Laides Of The Suprmese because sometimes they are billed Supremes and I don't think that is right .The only people I feel that should be alble to call themeselves The Supremes would be Diana are Mary.Shawn

Top of pageBottom of page   By Vandelron (24.44.20.172) on Saturday, June 07, 2003 - 06:34 am:

Also the Former Ladies of the Supremes cds almost always say The Supremes which obviously is a distortion/deception.

Top of pageBottom of page   By ..... (207.241.96.10) on Saturday, June 07, 2003 - 09:22 am:

Ewwwww.....Diana always finds some way to hurt Mary. Let Diana get her own name!
No Mary Wilson, No Supremes!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Marv (64.12.97.7) on Saturday, June 07, 2003 - 10:17 am:

Well what Diana does to spite Mary Wilson always seems to backfire. Such is a thing called KARMA!!

Top of pageBottom of page   By ANDREW (195.93.50.10) on Saturday, June 07, 2003 - 11:54 am:

Yes we all now about the laws of KARMA, what you give out negatively to other people. YOU GET BACK IN ABUNDANCE IN A BAD WAY.What goes around comes around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. But hey lets not go down that road of Playing Mary off against Diana and Diana off against Mary. We don't need to go there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Why because it will destroy this message board. People will begin to get heated and nasty over the issues with regards to the history and legacy of the Supremes, Mary Wilson and Diana and Co. If that happens I'm not even going to bother tapping in to this board. The same thing that happened on the Yahoo site can easily happen here!!!!! Yes I understand that there are people out there who are passionate about the Supremes Cause, Legacy, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross and Co. But right now we should be using our creativity, and fighting power as Consumers to help Mary Wilson in the Fight For The Supremes Name.I guess if Erin Brockervich could take on a multi-million dollar corporation and successfully win, even though the subject matter was entirely different. What is to stop us as buying consumers of the record industry from the doing the same to help the cause. We should be looking at solutions and ways to do this. NOT
MUD SLINGING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone is entitled to thier own opinions. Freedom of Expression and all that, but please don't destroy this board for the sake of NEGATIVITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All I can say in response to the last two messages posted on this board from an objective point of view. NOT NEGATIVITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED THAT IT IS QUITE POSSIBLE THAT Diana never really had any real Emotional Connection to The Supremes? Nuff said. Think about it?

In the next couple of days I will write something on this board which will blow your mind away!!!!!!. It's something I found on another message board and is Supremely positive. No negativity at all. Once you read it you'll begin to realise that if things were different between Mary Wilson and Diana Ross, Diana Ross and Mary Wilson, then may be there is hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anything is possible!!!!!!!!!!

I read Mary Wilson's Statement, and I can see where she is coming from.Even though I love the 70's Supremes as far as Mary,Jean and Cindy are concerned because of thier new and strong musical style./THE MICROPHONES ON MARY AND CINDY AND CO WERE TURNED UP, SO YOU COULD REALLY HERE THIER VOCALS.So I will just have to be content with listening to "Right On", "High ENERGY"
"Mary,Susaye and Scherrie" The Supremes 1975 album and also the one produced by Jimmy Webb, which I happened to find in my music collection the other day.Their my stress busters. The music is so good. But don't get me wrong the 60's stuff is also good.

There can be no reunion and until Mary, Diana and Cindy get it together.I accept that now.The underlyning reasons for this are many, varied and quite obvious. They represented the sound of the sixties and shaped a whole musical generation.

So for all you Supreme fans, and if Mary Wilson is out there.WATCH THIS SPACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will give you something to think about!

Andrew,
Thank you for your concern regarding the health and well being of the Soulful Detroit forum. Although it is just under two years of age, many topics have been discussed here. Yes it is true there are times that serious disagreements resulted in some of these discussions. There have even been times when a forum member chose for whatever reason to temporarily leave here. However, we are a unique group of individuauls who, when all is said in done, have the deepest respect for one another. As moderator of the forum it is left up to my discretion to see that things run smoothly. It's a great job because I rarely have to do anything. We will all be looking forward to what you have to offer in your posts, but rest assured you're in a completely different sort of forum here at Soulful Detroit.com.

Hi Ralph thanks for your reassurance. I will touch
base with this message board soon!

Yes, I've considered Diana's non-emotionalism to the group. :)
To be positive and humorous.....Why give Diana rights to the name, considering all the stunts she has from the tour bus days to RTL?
hehehehehehehehe
:)

Ralph--I must say u do a great job. The feelings here are so good. I got knocked only once here for saying I thought Chris Clark's record was not typical Motown and was told I was ignorant,in so many words. It upset me a bit cause Ive never seen any of that here and none since. This is the best.

As someone who posts quite frequently on the Forum, you have my assurance that no matter how heated & non-objective folks can be, we all have one common bond - we love the music of Detroit (and other cities)and have a healthy respect for those who created this music.

Like Ralph & Stephanie, I look forward to whatever information you contribute to this Forum.

Like KevGo, Ralph, and Stephanie, I also look forward to what you have to say. I once left the forum for a bit because of some negativity, but know that most people on this forum engage in intelliegent, informed discussion and allow people to have their opinions without ugliness or attack. This is a great place!

Sounds Like... There have been groups playing in my city at our auditorium (to full houses)...Sounds like the Bee Gees; Sounds like Neil Diamond. There must be some legal loop hole to allow these people to use these singers names. It also seems that people will pay money even though they know these aren't the originals.

Top of pageBottom of page   By stephanie (64.63.221.201) on Thursday, June 12, 2003 - 04:00 pm:

drlorne,
Are you serious? What are the groups like the Bee Gees and Neil Diamond calling themselves? Im not disputing what you are saying but some of these people the general public knows and I dont see how some of them can be playing to full houses
Thanks
Stephanie

Thanks again Ralph.

You do a great job.

We have learned a lot on SD over the last 21 months regarding how to manage people's opinions.

I'm pleased to say we have taken a major step forward since last September.

We can look objectively at people's opinions, not get upset at trivia.

Again I thank everyone for taking us on to a new level. I have made mistakes in the past but I am open minded and am willing to change.

SD will survive because of it's positive postings. The rest are for the trash can.

Thanks to everyone
David

I have no confirmation of this but it was just posted on another board that Mary has gotten the rights to the name Supremes and Universal/Motown will be announcing it soon. There may also be provision that Diana will share in said rights.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Marv (64.12.97.7) on Saturday, June 21, 2003 - 08:06 pm:

I read /heard this too yesterday. I am very ,very extremely happy for Mary!!!! I wonder if Universal will be picking up Mary's new CD slated for a Fall release?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Michael/cleoharvey (160.79.83.208) on Monday, June 23, 2003 - 10:45 am:

Can anyone tell me where they read this? I have also heard this rumor and even commented on it but I cannot seem to get confirmation from anyone. I talked to someone close to Mary and they seemed to not know much about it (possibly they were being protective) but I have seen no "media" confirmation of this story. I would love to see an article on the subject. Because of the great emotion the Supremes still engender (I find it totally amazing!!!), sometimes stories arise of out of wishful thinking and not the truth. 50% of the stories that I read during the Return To Love Disaster were the fabrications of inventive minds that loved one side or the other.

Top of pageBottom of page   By can can (137.186.199.102) on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 - 06:09 pm:

It's not a full, clear confirmation. But Mary updated her "Happenings" statement from her website on June 12th.. One of the things she added was a sentence pointing out that Her and Universal have "Come together".. so that's at least encouraging.. So at last some confirmation from Mary herself

One more thing I must get off my chest in defense of Mary.. after visiting the FLOS club on Yahoo! and seeing all of a certain D. Kramlick's gripes about Mary (aka "THAT WOMAN") and all the "awful things she's done to these ladies" and certain people how they could "never support her" (and that's fine, everyone's entitled to their opinion). I find it quite interesting to note that Kramlick and co. have alluded to some things in the past, specifically with regards to Mary's actions in "Mary vs The FLOS" (msgs 2682, 2639 just for a couple of examples)...but have yet to come out with a full, clear explanation to the fans about specifically and exactly where they stand and why they do on those issues. Mary has stayed mostly silent on those same issues, but at least has come out recently and stated, quite bluntly and fairly about where she stands and why she feels the way she does...
I don't know if it's because of legal restrictions, but if Mary can, then why can't they?

They seem to attack Mary using "Supremes" in her billing a lot.. As far as I am concerned, Mary has earned the right to call herself "Supremes starring.." or Supremes whatever... I wish she didn't have to do that, but if she does, that's fine because she's an original and was the only original member who stayed during the full tenure.. I don't they can say the same thing for Lynda, unfortunately..

anyways that was my little "release" =)
