Ritchie:
For the exception of the Isley Brothers (whose cover tunes sometime surpass the originals), I haven't been too impressed either with current covers of old tunes. The last one I really enjoyed was Mary J. Blige's version of "Misty Blue".

Anybody remember an artist by the name of Nick Scotti. He recorded a version of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes "Wake Up Everybody" Strong baritone voice and did an equally good job on the song as the original. Nick used to play Tony on the "Young and the Restless" TV Show. Hard to beleive it's the same person with that voice.
Also I like Major Harris'rendition of "Side Show".
Regina Belle did a good job with "Just Don't want to Be Lonely"
"Working My Way Back to You" by the Spinners was better than the Frankie Valli version. (John Edwards is a stellar vocalist)
Did someone mention R.Kelly's "Sadie" Good Job!
"Love we had Stays on My Mind" Dru Hill

Hey Girl-Freddy Scott/George Kerr.
By Eli (141.151.1.101) on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 10:22 pm: |
Hi Fayete,
That depends.
Technicaly, Luther sold way more units.
The song appeared on FOUR Luther multi platinum album and the Live at Wembley video which went quadruple platinum so I would have to say Luther, although it was never a single.
Majors single version sold 21/2 million which was respectable for 1975 but the album basically stiffed although it is a collectors item.
Go figure!!.

Kev-Go; Okay thanks! Out of all, as great as Freddy Scott's original version is and I love that version, I think I like George Kerr's "Öne Minute To Hey Girl" just slightly better.

By RD (63.188.32.39) on Thursday, June 05, 2003 - 10:44 pm: |
That's "Three Minutes to Hey Girl" Soul Sister. George actually begs for three full minutes before he sings one note. I remember one of the DJ's at WJMO saying after he played the song: "I didn't know George could sing." Kerr tried the same thing on "Me and Mrs. Jones" but it flopped.
By Soul Sister (65.43.150.250) on Thursday, June 05, 2003 - 11:08 pm: |
RD; Its been awhile since I listened to that song, I have it on a rare soul CD, but I could of sworn it was One-minute, could there be a shorter version, I'd need to make a phone call on that, as my stash is buried deep in storage.
Your probably right it was a long intro from what I remember. Yes George definately can sing.
Thanks S.S.
By RD (63.188.32.39) on Thursday, June 05, 2003 - 11:20 pm: |
He can sing but not that well, at least not on the records I have by him. I have two of his albums, including the extremely rare one title Love, Love, Love with "Me and Mrs. Jones." P-Vine Records out of Japan has issued all of Kerr's All Platinum albums.
By Soul Sister (65.43.150.250) on Friday, June 06, 2003 - 10:18 am: |
RD; I didn't even know George had a full album out on himself, I knew some of the 45s, also when he was with The Serenaders, & backed on one of The Manhattans Deluxe sides. George can talk better than he can sing (those that know him here will know what I'm talking about(Hey Mike!).He-He...
Japan has their hands in everything , wow, they thoroughly follow are artists closely. They know everything about Jimmy even posted web-sites on him, have every record there that you can"t get here, he's been number 1 male jazz vocalist there for the past 3 years straight, we're doing a tour there next month, hope I can squeeze some time in to go record hunting but its gonna be a tight schedule. Thanks for talking about the rare album, even tho'some records aren't that great for other reasons collectors just got to have them! S.S.

Lady Marmalade--I thought Labelle blew Pink et al out of the park. Nona Hendryx tactfully said the modern version was "busier"--the whole passion and flair of the song were missing in my opinion in the recent hit-a bunch of wanna be divas trying to top each other and then dancing in their underwear. What do u all think??
By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Friday, June 06, 2003 - 07:18 pm: |
Vandelron:
The difference between Labelle's "Lady Marmalade" & Pink/Christina Aguilera/Mya/L'il Kim's version is that the original was sung by WOMEN and the cover was sung by girls.
