HEY GANG,I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS BUT LONG INTRODUCTIONS TO SONGS DRIVE ME NUTS..MASTERPIECE,THE TEMPS..MOSTLY ANYTHING BY FRANKY BEVERLY AND MAZE[DON'T GET ME WRONG,I LOVE HIS SONGS,BUT BY THE TIME HE STARTS SINGING I'M HALF ASLEEP]INTRODUCTIONS ARE IMPORTANT,BUT UNLESS THE SONG IS AN INSTRUMENTAL,LET'S GET TO THE SINGIN!LET ME HEAR FROM YOU ALL ON THIS.

OK R&B: GOT TO AGREE WITH YOU TO A LARGE EXTENT...HOWEVER...DISC JOCKEY'S AROUND THE COUNTRY *LOVE* THOSE LONG INTROS!!!...WHEN THEY SEE 45 SECONDS COUNTING DOWN ON THEIR TIMER...THEY CAN DO ALL KINDS OF STUFF...AND YAP THEIR HEADS OFF!!!...SOMETIMES...HOWEVER...LONG INTRO'S FIT THE BILL!!!...ONE EXAMPLE I WOULD GIVE IS BARRY WHITES..."FIRST...LAST...EVERYTHING"!!!...IN TYPICAL BARRY WHITE FASHION...THE TRACK BUILDS...WITH BARRYS LITTLE RAP BASED WITH A HEAVY RHYTHM INFLUENCE...THEN...WHEN THE STRINGS COME IN...THE WHOLE SONG JUST BUILDS INTO WHAT EVENTUALLY BECOMES A MASTERFUL PRODUCTION!!!...INTRO'S LIKE THAT...I COULD LISTEN TO ALL DAY LONG!!!...STU

R&B:
How do you think the Tempts felt when they were cutting "Papa Was A Rolling Stone," "Smiling Faces Sometimes" and "Masterpiece"? And Norman Whitfield would cut the tracks live (as opposed to pre-taping and just advancing the reel to where the singers would start).

Anyway, my list would include the following:
"Joy & Pain" - Maze (sorry, Frankie - but get to the point!)
"It May Be Winter Outside.." - Love Unlimited (I love Glodean, but damn....)
"Sunset Grill" - Don Henley
"Don't Come Around Here No More" - Tom Petty (thank God for single edits!)
"Happiness Is Just Around The Bend" - Main Ingredient (then again, the record was made for the dance floor...)_

That's it for now...

How about Isaac Hayes, "By the Time I get to Phoenix", Or Bobby Womack's Facts of Life?

Sometimes monologues can be at the end of the singer's song like Laura Lee's "Rip Off" & Millie Jackson's "Keep the Home Fires Burnin'".

How many rap intros can we name?

Like Linda Jones, Laura Lee, The Manhattans, etc..

I think the line during the Papa Was A Rolling Stone session was, "When do I come in...?"

On the other side of the coin,
one of my favorite short and to the point intros is Love Child.

When I was a kid, hearing the Love Child intro, I thought the b/g were singing "Ten months long..." They were actually saying "Tenament slum..." I guess this phrase was used in the intro to set up the situation to the listener before the first verse.

Do the intro talking parts on What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted and I've Passed This Way before count as rap intros!

Rap intro also on The Day I Found Myself from Edna (Honey Cone, Date With Soul, Sandy Wynns) Wright

KevGo....Happiness Is Around The Bend...I got my first UK version without that long intro - I soon got shot of version and replaced with that long intro on a US 45 - sheer delight.

Short intro's....Kim Weston on Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me For A Little While). When she performed it at the Manchester Ritz, Kim had to ask the crowd to stop raving so that she could hear the initial drum beat to commence her vocal.

Short intros..Aint to proud to beg
When somethings wrong with my baby
When we get maried

There's a very long intro to "Why Can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas. It's a ramshackle, one man show, almost amateurish arrangement that somehow mesmerizes me every time.

REGARDING THIS TOPIC!!!...KEEP IN MIND THAT DURING THE 60'S "SOUL" ERA...THE PRODUCTIONS WERE STILL LARGELY TIED INTO AM RADIO...AND YOU WEREN'T GOING TO GET MUCH AIRPLAY ON THOSE EXTENDED 3-MINUTE PLUS SONGS (GET IN AND GET OUT WAS THE RULE OF THE DAY)!!!...THE REAL ADVENT TO THE LONG INTRO...WAS A BYPRODUCT...LARGELY...OF THE "AOR" (ALBUM ORIENTED ROCK) FORMAT OF THE 70'S AND 80'S...WHEN FM RADIO...WITHOUT THE SAME TIME CONSTRAINTS AS THE AM FORMATS BEGAN TO GAIN IN POPULARITY!!!...WHILE THERE WERE CERTAIN EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE BACK IN THE 60'S AND EARLY 70'S...THEY WERE THE EXCEPTION AND CERTAINLY NOT THE RULE!!!...SO WE CAN THANK...OR BLAME...OUR "ROCKER" FRIENDS FOR THE ADVENT OF THE LONG...LONG...INTROS AND SOLO'S TO EMERGE OUT OF THE 70'S!!!...STUBASS

AND BY THE WAY...WHO'S GOING TO "BITCH" ABOUT SUCH CLASSIC INTRO'S AS CARLOS SANTANA'S "BLACK MAGIC WOMAN"!!!...YOU KEEP ON "PICKIN" CARLOS..AND WE'LL PATIENTLY WAIT FOR THE VOCALS TO BEGIN!!!...STUBASS
