Oh, yeah, maybe Eli can answer this. On The Jacksons (CBS), was it the original MFSB backing them up (Baker, Harris & Young), or was it the next crew (Dennis Harris, Sugar Bear and Charles Collins)?

In "Looking Through The Windows", arent they using "Shaft" cord changes? Check the vamp at the beginning.
That's not the only song to use them. How 'bout Ashford and Simpson's "Top Of The Stars"?
Fmaj7//Em????
Correct me if I'm wrong. Peace.

"Looking Through The Windows" stood out because of its "cinematic" arrangement and funky groove.
In other words, who DIDN'T borrow from the Shaft AND Superfly soundtracks during that time?
Let's see....O'Jays "Back Stabbers", Harold Melvin's "I Miss You" (intro kinda sounds like Isaac's "Ellie's Love Theme")...the Chi-lites' version of "Inner City Blues" from the Lonely Man album...the list goes on..

KevGo..."Shaft" was borrowed from then and is still borrowed (or stolen) from ! My nephew (a "turntablist" and up & coming musician/writer)recently showed me the "short list" of how much "Shaft" had been sampled by rappers and it was amazing !! A snippet here or a snippet there...sped up or slowed down and the title track, "Cafe' Regios", and " Ellie's Love Theme" have almost never really left the charts since the LP dropped. (I hope "Black Moses" is gettin' his ducats !!)

Thank God for college radio! This guy who does a blues/rap/soul radio show on Fridays here in Cleveland played "One More Chance" a few times on his show. I was so impressed, I had to comb around and find a 45 copy of the song! It just blows the "A" side of the single away (considering that the "A" is the original "I'll Be There", that's a hard thing to do!).
I'm partial to some of the more ignored singles:
"Looking Through the Windows"
"Mama's Pearl"
"Maybe Tomorrow"
"Whatever You Got, I Want"
as well as "Dancing Machine" and "The Love You Save"...but it's all good!
Best,

Hey did you know Tito had an album that was never released, (only kidding, dont go salivating folks).
KevGo: The Jackie album wasnt that bad as I thought it would be..its pretty happening.
Common: Blame It On The Boogie!!! That is still a great record!! I have the video to that song.
By Common (209.2.55.168) on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 03:04 pm: |
KevGo: I didn't even know that Jackie had one! Now I'm really embarassed! :o( Was this released in the 80's? How could I have missed that?
Slyfan: Isn't it a great record? Do you remember, I think it was the midnight special or Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, they used to show video clips of various artists who didn't or couldn't appear live? If I remember the Jackson clip correctly, aren't they dressed in white suits with their trademark afros. Is that the one you speak of?
Peace!

Common:
The Jackie Jackson solo album was released on Motown in 1973 or 1974. I remember distinctly him doing a cover of the Delfonics "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time" on the LP. It's been out of print for over 25 years.

Common: Good memory or do you work for Vh1 (jes' kidding..) but yes it was on the Midnite Special and they did perform live after the video..amazing how far videos go back...
It was a great performance too..
Midnite Special and Rock Concert were really great and underrated shows.. I have an episode with Chic, Rick James and Sylvester on the Midnite Special...CLASSIC!! Rick singing off key and forgetting his word and all!!
By Common (209.2.55.169) on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 03:38 pm: |
KevGo: Hmmmmm, that's why I never heard of it. Will have to scrounge around in some used record shops when I have the time, to see if I can come up with that one too. So many records, but so litte time!
Slyfan: LOL! Okay, so my memory isn't failing me after all! I think the video also had some effects where the Jacksons looked like they "multiplied" ever time they danced.
Man, I do recall seeing Rick when he performed "Big Time" & "Mary Go Round" on the show. I might have seen the Chic performance but I probably passed out since it came on at midnight & that was passed my bedtime. LOL! I always tried to take a nap just so I wouldn't miss the Midnight special. I like the Midnight special more than Don's Rock Concert. I think one time, they did a tribute to Rod Stewart(???) and show clips of "Hot Legs" & "Tonight's The Night".
Peace!

Jackie Jackson's solo album shows up on ebay relatively frequently, so it's not too hard to find. I really like a track on it called "Do I Owe" -- it's a song by The Corporation, with great J5 backing vocals. No singles were pulled from Jackie's album in the U.S. but there was one issued in Brazil on the Tapecar label.
As for Tito's album, he apparently did work on an instrumental album. I've seen a couple of references to it in interviews that were done around 1973, particularly in the British press. I think he siad it was a blues guitar album. I have footage from a 1975 Mexico City J5 concert where Tito actually plays a blues guitar solo while his brothers are off taking a break in the middle of the concert. Very different from the typical J5 fare.
From about 1972 on, the Jackson 5 were always talking about writing and recording their own stuff in their own home studio. I would love to hear some of those tracks sometimes. Does anyone know if the J5 were credible songwriters in the early 70s, before the move to Epic?
By Greg C. (207.103.134.223) on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 10:14 pm: |
Jackie's first solo album did come out in the fall of 1973. It was a decent release but Motown didn't really get behind it. My favorites on it were "Love Don't Want To Leave" and "Is It Him Or Me?" He had a second album release in 1989 called "Be The One" on the Polydor label. Not a very memorable release. The material and arrangements were weak.
The Jackson Five produced a girl group in 1974. They were a family of four sisters from Ohio called MDLT (Maxine, Diane, Laverne, Tina) Willis. They had one release on Joe Jackson's Ivory Tower International Records label called "What's Your Game." I liked the song and the Jackson Five wrote and produced the track but could never find it at retail. That was about the only thing they did at the time until they left Motown in 1975 for Epic.
By Sly fan (64.169.106.177) on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 10:19 pm: |
Greg C: I have that song on 45 (as a promo), I have a video of them doing that song on Soul Train. They were hot ta trot, if I was some years older then...
That song should've been a hit. Good call.

"Mama's Pearl"
( I wonder why these 2 which are so popular with others on this board never were bigger hits like "I'll Be There" ? )
