I would say that all of them were born in the south and that their families made the migration north to find better job opportunities.

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN MASON DIXON-AND THE CONCEPT OF THIS TOPIC...PROBABLY (JUST A ROUGH GUESS) ABOUT 50-PERCENT PLUS... OF THE MOTOWN ARTISTS MIGRATED FROM THE SOUTH...MANY...AT A VERY YOUNG AGE WITH THEIR FAMILIES...SOME...AS THE GOT OLDER...POSSIBLY ON THEIR OWN!!!...OTHERS...HOWEVER...WERE BORN AND RAISED IN DETROIT...OR OTHER SUCH NORTHERN CITIES AND MOVED TO DETROIT...SEEKING OUT THIS NEW OPPORTUNITY TO RECORD THAT THEY'D HEARD ABOUT!!!...OTHERS...HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO "FLAP THEIR WINGS" AND JUST HEAD NORTH!!!...FAYETTE...IS THERE POSSIBLY A QUESTION HERE AS TO WHETHER THE SINGING STYLE OF THE "NATIVE DETROITERS" WAS DIFFERENT THAN THOSE WITH A HEAVIER SOUTHERN INFLUENCE???...HUH???...STUBASS

GC Cameron--McCalls Creek, Mississippi--

STUBASS--an interesting aside to ponder.A nice piece in Tuesday's NYTimes by Elvis Mitchell, a native Detroiter, touches on the Detroit/Memphis nexus of soul music. To me it all goes back to gospel music and the blend that Ray Charles and Sam Cooke pioneered. you could sweeten it or keep it raw--Mitchell mentions Sam's "Live at the Copa," and "Live at the Harlem Club, 1963," as two great examples.

INTERESTING TAKE DIEGO!!!...I'VE ALWAYS FOUND THAT DETROIT/MEMPHIS CONNECTION (OR LACK THEREOF) QUITE INTERESTING...IN AS MUCH AS THE DIRECTION OF THEIR RESPECTIVE STYLES AND HOW THEY ARRIVED AT THEM!!!...AS FOR SAM COOKE AND RAY CHARLES...TRUE ENOUGH REGARDING THE HEAVY GOSPEL INFLUENCE (AS WAS TRUE WITH MANY "SOUL" SINGERS OF THAT ERA!!!...THE SAM COOKE CONNECTION IS ESPECIALLY INTERESTING...IN THAT...HAVING MIGRATED TO CHICAGO FROM MISSISSIPPI...THE COOK (THE "E" CAME LATER) FAMILY ENCOURAGED SAM IN THE DIRECTION OF GOSPEL...WITH SAM COOKE EVEN HAVING TO CHANGE HIS NAME TO RECORD SOME OF HIS EARLY "SOUL" MATERIAL...AS NOT TO OFFEND HIS GOSPEL COLLABORATORS!!!...ALSO INTERESTING...IS THE FACT THAT HIS EARLY MANAGEMENT SAW SAM COOKE AS MORE OF A NIGHTCLUB SINGER...IN THE TRADITION OF NAT COLE OR SAMMY DAVIS JR...AND COOKE HAD TO BREAK FREE OF THAT INFLUENCE TO RECORD THE MATERIAL THAT HE WANTED WHICH WAS MORE R&B BASED!!!...AS FOR RAY!!!...RAY IS JUST RAY...AND CARVED HIS OWN STYLE WHICH INFLUENCED THE ENTIRE GENRE TO A GREAT EXTENT!!!...THANKS FOR THAT...STUBASS

stubass i think you're question to me is
whether a northern sings better than a southern.
i don't think there's a difference actually,
if they were from the south and moved up
north their sound went with them.
