Does anyone have details on either of these record labels? I'd like to know who the producer, arranger and songwriters were. Is there an address on the label?
To my knowledge each label only released one 45, both by Emanuel Taylor.

Hi Graham,

I don't have much info. but here it is -

Bern 077 (1977?) Emanuel Taylor
"You're The One For Me"
"Remember Me Always"

Bernard 1-1-78 (1978?) Emanuel Taylor
"You've Really Got A Hold On Me" (E Taylor)
?
Prod. Emanuel Taylor arr - Travis Biggs

The Bernard single shows this address -
Bernard Record Sales,
PO BOx 04069, Detroit

It also says that "You've .." was from an album
"Emanuel Taylor" (Bernard 01178) - as far as I know the album never appeared.

Thanks Davie
Where did you get this info' from?
I spoke to Emanuel last year, but he couldn't remember much about these two recordings.
Did you know he also had a 45 on the Music Now label?

Davie - I'm sure "Remember Me Always" was also recorded by Emanuel Laskey (Stag label)... I'll dig it out and check who the writer is.
I think the flip side of the Bernard disc is called "Society." The number I have noted down is slightly different - #778. But I haven't seen or heard these 45s.

Davie and Graham,

I have the Emanuel Laskey record on the Stag label. I'll have a look when I get back home later today. I also have another couple of singles on the label. Both 45 tracks are called 'Slowly But Surely', one is by Society Train and the other by a chap whose name I've forgotten, Johnny ???. I think the title of the latter is misspelt.

Top of pageBottom of page   By acooolcat (61.58.181.126) on Monday, June 02, 2003 - 09:39 am:

Ian,
I've just checked my copy of the Stag 45, and "Remember Me Always" is credited to Dennis Talley and Willie Hampton. Maybe Emanuel's song is a different one - or the writers' names are miscredited. Emanuel told me he wrote it.
I thought I had the Society Train 45 too, but I can't find it.
Here's what I have listed for the Stag label;

10008 - Emanuel Laskey - Remember Me Always (1 & 2)
10024 - The Branding Iron - I'm A Soul Lover / I Don't Know Why ( I Love You So)
0003 - Society Train - Slowly But Surely / Inst.

That's it - none by Johnny what's-is-name.

Cheers,
Graham

Hi Graham,

Sorry for the delay - I didn't spot your post on
Friday.

The Bernard details are from a scan of the 45
in an old issue of "Voices From The Shadows"

Can't remember where the Bern single info. came
from.

I've seen that Music Now single listed as by
both Emanuel Taylor and Emanuel Laskey - I've
never been sure which is right.

I'll see what other info. I have on Stag releases later.

Davie and Graham,

The one I couldn't remember is:

Johnny Gay - 'Slowly But Surly' voc. & instr. - ST 0002.

I don't have the Branding iron track but the other 3 records all have different label designs. Here's the Society Train label from t'internet.

Stag

Thanks for the additional Stag info' Ian. Please let me have the serial/master number too... it might be have the prefix "PL" - or simply say "Side 1."

Davie - Emanuel Laskey also had a 45 on the Music Now label called "Just The Way (I Want Her To Be). But I guess you know that already.

Writers are as ST 0003 but ST 0002 is produced by Fleming and Clarke Productions. Bottom of label has 'Stag Records, Div. of Accurate Scraping & Machine Co'. Inscribed on runout groove is ST-002-A2 then 95 then (possibly) AL. B side has ST-0002-2 then 95 then GM DET then MGB. Hope this helps!

As Doc Kyle crops up on above 45s, does the De-To record exist that I have listed:

De-To DS2878 - Doc Kyle Orchestra - Sitting In My Class (Instr)/Jealous Heart (Instr).

'Stag Records, Div. of Accurate Scraping & Machine Co'. - love it !

Are there any early heavy metal bands on the label ?

Davie, LOL! I'm sure Ritchie would know! Perhaps the Bronzettes? I bet there were a lot of forgeries!

Top of pageBottom of page   By acooolcat (61.58.181.126) on Thursday, June 05, 2003 - 05:14 am:

Ian - I'm sure De-To 2878 does exist - but I don't have a copy, and haven't seen one either.
The Music Now label was part of De-To, aka Detroit Sound.

Does anyone know if the Branding Iron group on Stag is the same as the one who had a 45 on Volt?
Graham
PS; Ian, I've been told that the instumental of "Sitting In My Class" was included on a Goldmine CD.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Davie Gordon (193.122.21.42) on Friday, June 06, 2003 - 04:40 pm:

Graham, I'll check later but I think the Branding Iron group on Volt are a different outfit.

Davie

Top of pageBottom of page   By Davie Gordon (193.122.21.42) on Sunday, June 08, 2003 - 04:02 pm:

Graham,
I've yet to see a line-up for Branding Iron but there's enough circumstantial clues to make me think there's a link.

The Volt singles were

4043 (6/70)
Right, Tight And Out Of Sight (Willie Dixon)
Slave For Love (J B Lenoir)
Prod. : Soul Sound Productions

4059 (4/71)
Born Too Late (Willie Dixon)
IF I Could See (Alonzo Tucker, Trudy Berly)
Prod. Soul Sound Productions arr - Gene Barge

It looks to me as if these are Chicago recordings
picked up by by Stax, possibly via Pervis Staples
of the Staple Singers who'd earlier recorded one of Leroy Crume's songs on their first Stax album.

The Crume Brothers, I believe, started out as gospel singers (they were members of the Soul Stirrers) but they'd occasionally make secular records and had at least three singles as the Crume Brothers during the sixties. They had releases on Peacock, Atco and Chess so it looks as if they moved around a fair bit. It's possible when the Volt deal finished the Branding Iron did a one-off session in Detroit which Stag released.

Thanks Davie,
The notes to the Stax-Volt box set say they were from Chicago and Rob Bowman names Calvin April and Lee Crume as the two members.
Cheers to Bosko for the info'.

Graham, for some reason I thought details of
the Branding Iron single on Stag had already been mentioned - my post will make a bit more sense
if you take these details into account

Stag 10024 BRANDING IRON (1974)
I'm A Soul Lover (Leroy Crume)
I Don't Know Why (Leroy Crume)
Prod / Arr : Dillard Crume

There's a few titles registered with BMI as
written by Leroy Crume and Calvin April

"ALL These Things Just For you"
"I Can't Wait"
"We've Got To Have Love"
I've been unable to find any sign of these being issued.

"Lee Crume" as mentioned in the Stax box-set booklet looks like either a simple error or a
thinly disguised version of Leroy's real name
- some further research shows that he joined the Soul Stirrers back in '55 as their guitarist, wrote quite a few of their SAR tracks and was
still with the group in the nineties.
