Does anyone in Detroit remember hearing a song called "Please Mr. Foreman... slow down the assembly line"
It was recorded by Joe L. Carter, and released on a Detroit label called Clissac around 1967. I've been told that the UAW adopted it and had it played on TV, presumedly for their commercials.
I also think Martha Jean played it a lot on the radio.
Can anyone comment?

TIA, Graham

Graham,
personally,
I much prefer the other side
"(I'm notGonna Be)Worried"

if your talking about the Clissac(no.3001).

This was played around the mid-80's to late-80's at the various all-nighters.
Thats when I remember it,
as I liked it the first time I heard it.

My mate had a batch of them
and after a fairly good response,so-so on the dancefloor,
to my knowledge it just seemed to fade away.

mel.(never worried)

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.
I interviewed the owner of the Rambrock record company last year and he told me about the deal with the UAW, which Mike Hanks negotiated. I just wonder if anyone in Detroit remembers hearing this song on local TV or radio.
Mel - like you, I prefer the flip side.
Davie - "It's Love Baby" was also released on the Boss label - number 103 - in November '68.
Thanks again,
Graham

Davie - here's another 45 from Joe L. Carter;

Audrey #112
My Life Story / Don't Cry Baby

Cheers,
Graham

Hi Graham,

I had the Boss 103 listed but thought it was a
mistake - I had another listing for Boss 103 as
a Johnny Dixon.

So there's two different (?) Boss labels in Detroit that both used # 103 - jeez - do these people have no consideration for us poor
discographers LOL !

Thanks for the info. on the Audrey single.
That ties up with one of the titles on his BMI
listing - "Don't Cry Baby" was self-penned.

The remaining title on the BMI list is
"Love Like I Never Had" (Cody Black,Grant Burton,
Joe L Carter,Rudy Robinson,Brenda Showers)
- looks like a Rambrock vintage song.

Hi Davie ,

Cody Black recorded "Love Like I Never Loved Before" on Rambrock 2004. Perhaps that's it? It was released in August, 1968.

Yes, there were two Boss labels in Detroit, and I have this Joe L 45 - so it's not a mistake.

Cheers, Graham

Hi folks!

The Joe L. saga continues Here are some scans to clear things up and to confuse even more

The first BOSS 103 scan is from the Super Sonic Sound Production. They also had SIR RAH and the SPORT label.

Boss.jpg

The other BOSS label was a subsidiary to VALTONE.

Boss3.jpg

This record is identical to the VALTONE 103 release. I dont know what record was released first.

Valtone.jpg

The Audrey 45 is kind of strange because the A-side, My Life Story, written by E.Jones, is instrumental. The B-side has the voice of Johnnie Mae!

AudreyB.jpg

I don't know much about Joe L. Was he a guitar player too?

Lars, my copy of 112 is different from yours in several ways--the label is maroon and silver, there is no mention of distribution by Instant Sales, the time is different by a couple seconds, Johnnie Mae does not receive artist credit, and My Life Story is a vocal, not an instrumental. Weird.

Top of pageBottom of page   By LG Nilsson (213.89.29.129) on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 - 03:43 pm:

Joe,

I just checked the writing in the run out of the record: ST 112 A on the A-side and ST 112 B on the B-side. That looks OK. This is the only yellow Audrey I have got. Others are dark red, light red, maroon, dark blue and light blue... almost all have different graphics... The time on my "My Life Story" is 2.59 produced by J.M. Matthews... as you say... Weird!

I have the exact same Clissac and Valtone 45's that NL Nilsson showed up above. I also have a live version of "Please Mr.Foreman" from the 1973 Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival on Total Energy Records. Joe L also does "In The Evening" on that disc, which was culled from John Sinclair's collection. Joe L was BAD! Johnnie Bassett told me that Joe L only sings in the church these days. -RJ

I never noticed the Ram Brock affiliation on that record! I have a Cody Black or two on that label.Cody is alive and well and still singing great.

Thanks for the input - "It's A Mess I Tell Ya"
as somebody once sang !

It was bad enough enough having two Boss 103's
now we have two Audrey 112's - no wonder nobody's
tried to do a full listing of all of Johnnie Mae's
labels it looks as if it'll be even more confusing
than J&S / Zell's.

Thanks for the scans Lars.
Joe - does your copy of the Audrey 45 also have Johnnie Mae singing? Or is it a "vocal" duet?
Graham
PS - I still don't have an answer to my original question - but that's okay.

The A-side of the Audrey 45 looks like this. It is an instrumental blues with guitar solo.

I wonder if the R.Robinson was the late Rudy Robinson on the first scan? I see Johnny Allne did some arranging on one the 45's. He is still around and playing great piano, as Jim G will testify.

Yes, It's Rudy - he was deeply involved with the RamBrock label.

Joe L's `Foreman` track is probably my favourite Detroit side but I've always pondered why such a Bluesy recording was put out in the 2nd half of the 60s, at a time when Funk was shaping up? Keith

HEY KEITH,have to agree with you there, but to the funk sound,I think the answer song to PLEASE MR. FORMAN was the ROUGE PLANT BLUES by STIX and STONED,a blues title with a funk sound.
Building kars while seeing stars,
I kall it the rouge plant blues.

... never look too deep into the 45 boxes you have. I was just looking for some singles by the Dynamics and also found this... the third Boss label! Funny thing that R. Robinson's name is on the label too! ... but this must be another guy... or? I don't think Ray Charles (Robinson) produced this uptempo Doo-Wop song:

Boss2117.jpg

It sounds like late 50's, early 60's. I don't know from what city this record is.

R.C Robinson is Ray Charles. RC was what Ray's family & friends called him when he was growing up. It could be him. His full name is Ray Charles Robinson. Can't say for sure tho'.

Lars, that Boss is out of early-'60s Chicago. There were at least half a dozen releases on the label, including Perk Lee's rare Northern side, The Docks

Top of pageBottom of page   By MEL&THEN SOME9 (212.159.52.148) on Sunday, June 15, 2003 - 08:35 pm:

Perk Lee was recorded twice,
The Docks/Peanut butter sandwich
on as you say above
Boss Records(no.2125)

and the exact same two sides
were also released on the
USA Label(no.748).

the Boss cut valued at around the 2 ton mark or thereabouts with the USA cut not far under at around a ton fifty to a ton seventy five.

Was Joe L Carter of Audrey, Valtone , Clissac fame the same person who was Joe Carter in Dave Hamilton's Peppers? Keith
