The O'Jays recorded a live version of "Stand In For Love" at Leo's Casino prior to Imperial Records releasing the studio version. I know cause I happened to be at the show. I saw a promo copy of the live version but don't know if it was ever officially released.

"I'll Be Sweeter" was the bomb but so was "Look Over Your Shoulder," its follow up.

"Lost Inside of You" by Al Hudson & the Soul Partners is a favorite of mine too.

Others:

"The Only One I Love" and "I Can't Believe"--the Miracles

You're the Best Thing Since Candy - The O'Jays

"Minstrel and Queen" - The Impressions

"Can I" and "When We Were Made As One" - the Manhattans

"Then" - the Four Tops

"Your Heart Belongs To Me" - the Supremes

"What Ever Hurts You" - the Mad Lads

RD; Beautiful, love your list! Yes, the live version of "Stand-in For Love" was released on what I don't know but can find out tonight as DJ Feilix Hernandez plays it from time to time on his Rhythm Revue radio program. Come to think of it I think I have it too, can't remember if mine is a tape copy or the CD(?) You see All of my vast collection is packed away in storage boxes as Jimmy & I are anticipating a move to LA,we'll see, I hope so. I miss not being able to refer to or listen to MY music,(Smile). I'm listening to Felix's show right now he's playing Cool Jerk by the Capitols! Love it!!! S.S.

RD; Man all your songs are mine too, WOW! When We Are Made As One written by Smitty was "His & My" song when we lived together. It brings back alot of sweet memories for me. S.S.

Top of pageBottom of page   By RD (63.188.33.205) on Saturday, May 24, 2003 - 05:15 pm:

Ron McCoy was in the studio watching when Smitty and the Manhattans recorded "We Were Made As One," and said Smitty's vocal blew him away.

The O'Jays and the Temptations use to have some fierce battle of the groups at Leo's Casino. "Stand In For Love" was the O'Jays' showstopper and "Don't Look Back" was the Temptations' ace in the hole.

I only recently heard Linda Jones' rendition of "I Do"; it's on a double CD All Platinum Records collection and is listed incorrectly as "For Your Precious Love." Imagine my shock when I heard her belting out "I Do."

Some more favs:

That's Not Part of the Show - the Manhattans
Spell - Blue Magic
Not On the Outside - the Moments/Eddie Kendricks
Slow Down Heart - the Temptations
Farewell My Love - the Temptations
You're Not an Ordinary Girl - the Temptations
You're the One - the Marvelettes
Bound - the Ponderosa Twins Plus One
Trying to Get to You - the Imperial Wonders
That's When I'll Stop Loving You - Linda Jones
I Love You More - Lee Williams & the Cymbals
Girl, I'm Gonna Miss You - the Moments
Friends by Day (Lovers by Night) - the Whatnauts
He Don't Really Love You - the Delfonics
The Birds the Word/Papa Oom Mow Mow/Little Sally Walker - the Rivingtons

RD;
Thanks for relaying the studio story, hearing "Smitty"in person was the best way to hear him, it was a moving experience.
O'Jays & Temps, both great songs but I think "Stand In For Love"was the best of any & all the rest! Eddie has the deepest feeling in his voice more than most lead singers.
"I Do" by Linda is my favorite by her, 2nd. favorite "Thats When I'll Stop Loving You", AWESOME!!!
"Thats Not Part Of The Show" also one I favored by Gerald & Manhattans, I understood,yeah...knowing what was going on in different situations at the time, it was so relevent.
RD, YOU have awesome taste, I can dig it!

Top of pageBottom of page   By DIEGO (205.188.209.109) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 11:20 am:

RD, that's a cooking list! "Look Over Your Shoulder," is definitely an all-time fave of mine, and your Four Tops song reminded me of another Tops favorite "Just Ask The Lonely," but take this big high-five for the Mad Lads' "Whatever Hurts You." Hadn't known of the live version of "Stand in For Love," S.S., if you find out where it can be had, please, please, please pass it on. Hey, and Smitty was your guy? Wasn't that him leading on "Follow Your Heart?"

Top of pageBottom of page   By RD (63.188.33.7) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 01:13 pm:

"Follow Your Heart" was the jam. It was a cool song to hand dance to. And yea, that's Smitty singing lead.

A lot of recordings that became popular northern soul plays never made it here when released because you couldn't dance to them and look cool at the same time. In another thread somebody mentioned Eddie Holland's "Leaving Here" in the dance tune category. Can somebody please tell me what dance you could do to "Leaving Here" and look even halfway cool doing so?

In the '60s it was all about being cool. Men wore dress pants with sharp creases, hi boy shirts or banlons, spit shined dress shoes (lizard and snakes) and sported conks. Jeans (we called them blue jeans) were wore to do yard work or play sports, and tennis shoes were the cheapest kind of shoes you could buy.

"Whatever Hurts You" is the Mad Lads' finest recording, not their most successful, but their finest by far. Stax blew it though. The song was promoted poorly. I live in Cleveland, a break out city for records back in the day and it was never played here--and we had two soul stations. I first heard of the record from a girl who had just moved here from Memphis. I brought the Mad Lads up in conversation and told her I liked "I Want a Girl," and thought it was their finest and she told me about "Whatever Hurts You" and how popular the song was in Memphis.

To my knowledge the Mad Lads never appeared live in Cleveland. I saw the junior Mad Lads (the Newcomers) on a show with the Barkays at Leo's Casino and they were baddddd. Very professional and very slick. They all wore super cool beige Stetson hats that matched their outfits.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Soul Sister (65.43.150.250) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 01:46 pm:

Diego; You have impeccable taste too. RD is correct on the Smitty question, he knows his stuff.
RD; I second that emotion on Whatever Hurts You.
I saw The Madlads, Barkays, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Deon Jackson (I was his guest at the time), The Capitols, & Barbara Lewis all on the same show (not possitive but trying to remember if Carla Thomas & Otis Redding were on that one, they were on another show with The Manhattans , Jive Five etc..that may be what I was thinking of, that one was at the Brooklyn Paramount in early 1968) The first show I was referring to was early spring 1966 at the Bradford Theater in Newark, N.J.
Diego & RD; The LIVE version of "Stand In For Love" was out only on a 45 on the Imperial label, actually was a re-issue on 45. I could probably get you a tape down the road, but the hard to find 45 you'll have to hunt for at record fairs, if lucky at an oldies store.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Soul Sister (65.43.150.250) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 02:05 pm:

RD; Maybe a little before your time we called jeans "dungerees", Levy & Lee & Wrangler were the favorite brands back then.
I remember them shoes white bucks, allegator, croccodile, & snakeskin for the guys, the gals had saddle shoes in the 50s, go-go boots in the 60s, everyone had penny loafers in the 50s. Guys also had engineer(or motorcycle) boots in the 50s, girls had poodle skirts sweater sets & shift dresses in the 50s. We had hip huggers & halter or midriff blouses in the 60s & of cource bellbottoms. The sneaker of choice(tennis shoes today) were PF Flyers and Keds in the 50s. Silly trivia. But for cool clothes it was what the R&B groups & Soul Singers were wearing, I don't care what anyone says I loved the conks, headrags for keeping the "do"was essential. And the best barber shops to go to in N.Y. was Shalimar & Playboy uptown in Harlem.

"I beleive in you and me" - The Four Tops. This is handsdown the best, no other song comes close. Next question?

Top of pageBottom of page   By RD (63.188.33.7) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 02:33 pm:

Doorags were cool. There were many barbershops to get conked in, in C-Town. But nothing like Detroit, which had a barbershop that stayed open all night.

Top of pageBottom of page   By MEL&THEN SOME9 (217.14.178.86) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 03:05 pm:

RD,
The dance that we do
whilst 'Leaving Here" is spun
is a fast and frantic
100mph frantic shuffle.

We would look cool going into the club,
Blazers, various no.of buttons up the sleeve, pressed trousers,a pair of Loafers or como Brouge shoes,a black glove on the right hand,a smooth sharp shirt and looking smart yet as cool as hell.
Once inside the all-nighter
a change of clothes and into sensible yet still looking cool as hell various clothing that was suitable for hitting the floor to uptempo and fast and furious dancers like Eddie Holland's
'Leaving Here'.
You can still look the part no matter what your doing.
You've either got it,
or not.
Mel(now Leaving here)

Top of pageBottom of page   By RD (63.188.33.7) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 03:23 pm:

If you say so Mel but we didn't dance frantic (or Hokey) here in the '60s, not in Soulsville anyway; fast, but not frantic. Another one we couldn't dance to was the Supremes' "Run, Run, Run." Another example is most of the tunes on the Hesitations' first Kapp album; other than a few jams it was not well liked in their hometown Cleveland. "I'm Not Built That Way" is a northern soul fav but the beat was way too herky-jerky (for lack of a better word) for us.

I guess teens and young adults worldwide dressed nice in the '60s. These days it's all about comfort. I wouldn't think of going to the shopping mall in anything other than my Iversons or Air Jordan athletic shoes. Dress shoes--you got to be kidding.

Okay, SoulSister., I'm gonna try REALLY REALLY hard to maintain composure here... but did I just read this >??? That's just awesome. FYI - Deon Jackson just happens to be one of my favorite singers ever, but I know nearly nothing about him or whether he still performs (if he does, it's one of my BIG DREAMS to see him perform). Do you know ANYthing about him now? Anything? :-) BTW, I totally agree with you on the process. David Ruffin's process is one of the greatest I've ever seen!

These clothing descriptions you guys are putting down are making me insanely jealous. Thank God for vintage clothing stores! Those styles still look great.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Soul Sister (65.43.150.250) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 11:28 pm:

Nish;
I last talked with"De"a few years ago, he lives in a suburb of Chicago, is on his second family, his son Deon, Jr. from his first marriage, he tells me looks just like him only in a lighter version as he is bi-racial, I think he was going to be a television director. "De"is originally from Ann Arbor, MI.
He's 57 years old this year, tho'I haven't seen him since the 60s I'm sure he still looks beautiful. Girl..you know what I mean! I have quite a few photos of him from back in the day.
As far as his job, I thought he said he was in marketing, though someone recently told me he was performing in small clubs in Chicago(?) if thats true, I wish he'd take his show on the road...but I seriosly doubt it cause when I last talked with him his children with his 2nd. relationship were still pretty young. I wish he would take his show on the road, it would be fantastic to see him out there again!
Oh! By the way Nish he was a sweet person when I knew him at the tender age of 19, unlike lots of other entertainers who were ego tripping. He was a bit of a teaser too, used to kid me saying he had a twin brother named Leon & I wouldn't be able to tell them apart, of course there is only one with those good looks! Except maybe his sons as he said.
S.S.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Nish (66.119.33.135) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 11:47 pm:

GEEE, S.S. Finally! As long as we know our favorite Ann Arbor soulcat is doing well, I can rest easy. You don't understand - he and Patti Drew and my complete lack of information about either one of them has haunted me since I was 12(not that I need to know everything, just that they are okay!). That's 10 years, man!

As if I haven't done it enough ad nauseum on this board, I have to brag on Deon, because he's one of the greatest soul voices ever. His "Hard To Get A Thing Called Love" is one of my favorite tunes. I think I'll spin a little Deon right now! Well, thanks so much, S.S. The way I'm smiling right now, you'd think I just passed the bar 2 years early! Happiness is knowing your favorite soul music greats are happy. You deserve a huge hug. :-)

Who knows, maybe if we talk it up enough, there will be news emanating from Chicago that Deon Jackson has decided to embark upon a tour... and wouldn't you know, he decides to hit Pittsburgh first! I hope he realizes there are still people out here who really appreciate his music and think well of him. :-)
