Stu,
I believe the album was part of a divorce settlement.

Yes, the album was part of his divorce settlement for his wife Anna. The title was meant to be a bit sarcastic.

I loved that album. The material was highly personal and was quite profound. As a substance abuse social worker, listening in depth to the the content of that record spoke volumes! It was way over a lot of folks heads at the time it was released. I can understand why it was a commercial failure.

Greg C. is right about "Here My Dear" - the album (a 2-record set) was ahead of the curve because there weren't many (if any)artists who were dealing with the issues of divorce and separation. When Marvin recorded the album, he was not a happy camper to hand over the royalties from the record to his ex-wife Anna but he had no choice - the man was not wealthy by any means and could not bear to see whatever royalties he was getting from his other recordings at the time to go toward Anna (especially since he wanted to marry Janis Hunter, the mother of his children Nona & Frankie).

Greg & Kevgo, I'm right with you on that. I had at least two friends who were going through divorces at the time and to sit and listen to it in its entirety is something to behold. There were some profound statements made on that lp including: You don't have the right to use a son of mine to keep me in line. She got to keep on living the way she 'customed to. That young girl(JAnis) is going to cost you. You used to say I was one georgous hunk of man but that didn't help me baby when I was on the stand. And my favorite: I been racing against time. Trying my best to find my way. Blowing coke all up my nose. Getting in and out my clothes. Running round wit midnight hoes. Another chapter in my life goes. If you want to undersatnd Anger, listen to Marvin's song. It may not have been the type of MArvin lp you were expecting but it was still a classic if you ask me.
I recently re-purchased it on cd because it was that good. And yes I think the lp generated only about 365,000$ in revenue towards the divorce settlement and as one poster said Marvin thought he was going to make an lp that didn't sell to be used for that purpose and the next one would be the bomb.

I understand what you all are saying but I just couldnt get into that album maybe you had to be a man or something and the song that really turned me off was Funky Space Reincarnation!!!! Oh well

Stephanie:
I'll put it to you this way - my two older brothers both went through divorces at the same time (early 1980's). Guess which album helped them through their rough times (and guess who loaned both of them his copy of "Here My Dear").

hi Stephanie......i know you think it was wrong for Marvin to air his dirty laundry on his lp and you were one of many who felt that same way. The Space song was not the best song on the lp and you are probably right about it being a man thing. How many times do we get to vent our frustrations in that way? No matter how he did it the bottom line was he still had to pay through the nose to get divorced. And Anna was too old for him anyway! LOL It was a departure form his routine but when you look at it it wasn't. He was not adverse to saying anything he wanted on his songs....this was no different other than it was personal.
