but also cut a version of
Don Davis's&his Groovers record

I am pretty sure that the Magnifiecnt (7) on lemco are not to be mixed up with the Magnificents on thelma as they are white. I have a copy waiting for a new home, if you are looking for one.

I had a single on Capitol label by the Magnificent
Seven and it was called "Sweet Soul Medley". I
was always told they were white. It was "Sweet
Soul Music" with bits a pieces of "OOO Baby, Baby", "People Get Ready", etc. It was recorded
live, or at least had a "live" effect with screams
and applause.

Randy, you might be confusing that with the Magnificent Men...I thought that was the name of the guys on Capital.

Maybe so.

Randy:
The "Sweet Soul Medley" was recorded by the Magnificent Men. Released on Capitol Records in 1967, the single peaked at #90 on the Hot 100.

Their MAGNIFICENT MEN LIVE! album - which contained the "Medley" - fared better on the R&B album charts (peaked at #18). They did a high-octane version of Jackie Wilson's "Whispers (Getting Louder)" where they incorporated the chorus from Fred Hughes' "Ooo Wee Baby, I Love You". Smokin' live album, which is sadly out of print.

Their studio album was reissued on Collectables Records along with the "Sweet Soul Medley" as a bonus track.

The M.M. were known for their ballad "Peace Of Mind" (arranged by Horace Ott). They later recorded a few singles that were arranged by Detroit/Chicago legend Sonny Sanders (and produced by Carl Davis).

Daryl Hall once said in a interview that the M.M. blew away all competitors whenever there was a "battle of the bands" in Philadelphia.

Mel,

The group on Lemco and Dial are a different outfit
- their lead singer was Archie Himons who also recorded solo (for Dial) as Little Archie.

The group on Capitol (and Mercury) were the
Magnificent Men, a blue-eyed soul group from
Pennyslvania.

Who were Don Davis' Magnificent Men ? - probably
session men.

Here's the writer credits for the Thelma single

"The Groove" (Don Davis,Eli Fountain,James Jamerson)
"Leap Frog" (Don Davis,Joe Hunter)

I'll leave you to draw your conclusions about
who probably plays on the record.

Dave,
I have an issue of 'never will I make my baby cry'
had it now for over 17 years.
great vocals.
Okeh Dave,
as were both on the same level regards the sounds,
can you(or anybody)put me out of my misery once and for all.

In around 1977
a big rarity on the scene was a stompin'45 (as far as I recall, its a lot of years now)by
Lesley Gore
called
'Cant get enough'
and to my knowledge was either a cover/up or was her on the Label
Caprice.
Now I have it on tape somewhere but just cant find it,it is another version to the Apollo's great track titled
'Just cant get enough of you'
Now was the Caprice Label a boot-leg?
if not
where does it originate from?
And I have what I thought was a complete discography of Lesley Gores material, but if so,
then this track is not featured.

All I remember of the record was the 100mph beat, and with an outrageous and superb snake like sax break in the middle,(think of Timothy Wilsons snakey sax on Loves like an itching)totally outasite.

So can you Dave
or somebody shed any light regards this track.
I am pretty sure it was definatley a boot-leg but then again what do I know.

Many thanks Dave
and anyone else.

Magic Stuff Dave,
I owe you a bevvie mate.
The 45 I saw or heard about must obviously be a boot-leg.
That bloody 45 has been eating away at me for that long.
I bet it sounds awful now?
catch ya later Dave
mel.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Davie Gordon (193.122.21.42) on Saturday, May 17, 2003 - 09:01 am:

Mel, if that Lesley Gore track was on Caprice
it's definitely a bootleg - she only recorded
for Mercury, Crewe, Mowest and A&M. The track was
album only - it was never on a Mercury single.

There were two legitimate Caprice labels - an
early sixties one from New York which issued some singles by girl group The Angels and an early
seventies one from Nashville which had Clifford
Curry among their artists.

Most definatly a boot-leg Davie.
just good to get that finally sorted out.
cheers
mel.
