Hey All..

I just found this sound file on a newsgroup, and I was wondering if anyone knew if this was Tammi singing, or Valerie Simpson...I think I'm leaning towards the latter!

If anyone wants this, or has webspace to post it up, let me know...it's a short file...!

I have the commercial on a music file. The voice-over identified her as Tammi. I'm not sure when the commercial was aired, but it was probably around 1968. The composer was Joey Levine, a prolific session singer best known for fronting the Ohio Express ("Yummy, Yummy, Yummy"). Whether or not he produced the session, I don't know. If he did, the session was likely done at Allegro Sound Studios in NYC.

Vickie,

As you are the resident Tammi expert, I am hesitant to disagree...but, there are some moments in the solo spots of her voice that sound like Valerie to me....

Speaking of Valerie/Tammi...does anyone know exactly what songs Valerie sang on? I've read before that she sang on "You're All I Need To Get By"...but, that to me, is definitely Tammi's voice.

Hello everyone,

MichaelOH: I've discussed this very subject with other Tammi fans & for some reason, especially towards the fade at the end, sounds alot like Valerie. Most of the song sounds like Tammi but the ending sounds suspiciously like Valerie. Maybe Vicki would know the answer to this one?

Peace!

Michael OH:
Maybe Harry Weinger can answer that question as to which Marvin/Tammi songs were actually Marvin/Valerie.

There are only two that I know of - "Good Lovin' Ain't Easy To Come By" and "The Onion Song."

Well, folks - I can't help wondering exactly what satisfaction will be gained when every syllable on a Marvin-Tammi duet has been correctly assigned to Val or Tammi. "You're All I Need To Get By" is a beautiful record, regardless of whether it is a patchwork vocal track or not. It would be nice to think it's all Tammi, but Harry has suggested that parts may be Val.

Whether we 'approve' of the subterfuge or not, it's a done deal - like it or lump it. Personally, I'd rather admire Tammi for her courage in attempting to continue as a singer, under very difficult circumstances, than agonise over which 'bits' Val might have dubbed in to finish the performance.

Ritchie hit the nail on the head.

Thank you Ritchie..
I love that response..

I Ditto it :)

Ritchie: I think we are just asking out of curiousity, in no shape or form are we trying to disparge Tammi's contributions. It doesn't bother me one iota whether Val dubbed in for Tammi or not. I understand what the circumstances were & I admire Val for doing what she did. I agree that "You're All I Need" is a beautiful song. Just wondering whether Val contributed to it or not. No harm is or was intended.

Peace!

I've been researching singer / writer Beatrice
Verdi and came across something rather interesting.

BMI lists a song called "Meet Miss Terrell"
written by Beatrice Verdi and Ellene Levenson,
published by Stone Agate, one of Motown's
publishing divisions.

Beatrice was one of the writers of "Can't Help But
Love You" which was recorded by Marvin and Tammi
- so the obvious question is, was "Meet Miss
Terrell" ever recorded ? I haven't been able to trace anything.

Wow Dave, that's pretty cool..
hopefully it's about Tammi..
Could be about Jean perhaps...
With the help of some forum members we found songs registered with BMI that Tammi wrote but thus far have not found the lyrics..
DOn't think she recorded them, the leads have not yeilded any lyrics yet...
The titles of the songs are intriging..
She wrote them under her name "Montgomery"

Hi, interesting topic here! The coca-cola commercial sounds like purely Tammi singing on it. To me it doesn't sound like Valerie.(of course this is just my opinion and watch it turns out that Val did sing partially on it hehe!) Who knows? Unfortunately for me i only have it downloaded on my computer and lots of times when Im trying to distinguish the Valerie/Tammi songs I will listen to it on tape/cd and put my headphones on to listen more clearly so I can't do that with this. But anyways, i think its Tammi.

Pretty interesting news about BMI having Tammi's songs registered without the lyrics. What exactly does that mean? That sounds confusing. Is it like Tammi had the titles to songs and *just* the titles were published and she hadn't written the lyrics yet? Im just wondering, thanks:)

Ditto, Thommygirl. As a song is always sung, would a song be a song without some lyrics?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Vickie (198.81.26.231) on Monday, May 19, 2003 - 04:08 am:

I believe ther must be lyrics somewhere...
BMI does not have them...I have checked and looked.
Library of Congress is where I am going to look next...As of now I just have the song titles, no lyrics...

Ah, interesting, Vickie. There could be melodies with those titles. Certainly you can register a tune at BMI without lyrics, right? I hadn't thought of this before my previous posting.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Vickie (198.81.26.231) on Monday, May 19, 2003 - 12:32 pm:

Hey Uptight,
I just hope I find them...
I have tried everything...
She co-wrote them with someone, I can't find that person either or the music company..
I am tireless and won't give up...
I mention it to everyone hoping it rings a bell..one day it will..
