Just caught that info.... :

Hendrix Bassist Noel Redding Dead At 57

Rock musician Noel Redding, best known for his stint as the bass player with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, died yesterday (May 11) in Ireland of unknown causes.
He was 57.

The coldness of these news agencies bulletins is just frightening...

I was a fan of Jimi Hendrix from way back when he was stil alive (that says a bit about my age LOL) and now the only original member still alive is Mitch Mitchell...
I'm going to play me some Axis Bold As Love today....

Noel pretty much got ripped off in the financial area of the overall scenario. In an interview, he stated he only got paid $200.00 for the Monterey festival. He was definetly part of a one in a life time musical situation which helped influence the shape of things to come. A sad loss. Rest In Peace Noel.

R.I.P. Noel, you may not have received the material rewards you deserved here on earth; but in the great realm of beyond you will receive your due.

Condolences to his family, and Thanks for the contribution he made to great music.

It's almost hard to believe that this man was barely 19 years old when he teamed up with James Marshall Hendricks (later Hendrix) and Mitch Mitchell to form probably one of THE most influencial bands in rock history.

While Hendrix took this guitar work into the stratosphere, Noel provided the foundation with his bass playing. When I listen to tracks like "Fire" and "Wind Cries Mary", Noel's playing was fat and full, melodic and bouncy at the same time.

Right now, he & Jimi are probably having a hell of a jam session (and comparing financial notes!).

Rest in peace, Noel.

An article in todays Seattle P-I noted that Redding had recently sued Experience Hendrix, the owners and managers of the Hendrix catalogue, for back royalties......

More bad news. I remember watching the Experience on TV when they first started and I was still at school. They were unlike anything before or since and Noel and Mitch provided a brilliant bottom for Jimi's work. IMHO much more so than the Buddy Miles tracks. Buddy was solid but not so responsive to JH. The news that he was ripped off financially makes it worse, but he left some great work that will live forever.

RIP Noel Redding

I saw the Jimi Hendrix Experience in Glasgow in 1967.

They were electrifying.

Axis: Bold As Love is a great record, good call Wonder B. Im puttin it on as well. Noels playing on If 6 was 9 really stands out with me, specially the section after the lyric
Im gonna wave my freak flag high. All that chromatic shit hes playing. Its like Charlie Parker or any musician who has the courage to take the leap. Truly a unique and difficult passage and his playing is very much like McCartney in that its appropriate, fresh and never boring. Like Jamerson or any musician whos in the moment drawing from an emotion or even a distant memory. It doesnt sound rehearsed because its not, its of the moment. Thats what I dig about Noels playing.

Fender honored Noel with his own signature Jazz Bass modeled after a 65 Jazz. You can find them on Ebay once in a while. Theyre MIJ, but, real solid. Great value for $500-600.

...And anyone interested in hearing Noel's guitar playing should attempt to throw on the JHE show from the Olympia in Paris January '68 (28th?- I have forgotten a few dates!)... he plays on 'Red House'.

Noel's signature on the bass Larry described above looks like this:

Fender Noel Redding signature Jazz bass

Last November while browsing around the Guitar Center in Roseville, MI I heard this bass calling out from behind a stack of bass heads.

Looking around behind the stack I found it sitting back there in a stand. On taking a closer look it became immediately obvious this bass deserved a lot better treatment than the previous owner was willing to give it.. so I proceeded to grind 'em down (GC's term) to $350, put it in the special '65-type Fender case they had also acquired with it and transported number 0124 to the safety of the Radio Ranch.

Though it is MIJ, this is one fine machine..

Bob,

Noel Redding is credited as the bass player "If 6 Was 9" on the "Experience Hendrix" compilation. The CD booklet credits seems pretty complete and gives Hendrix bass credits elsewhere such as on "All Along The Watchtower" and "Bold As Love", but not on "If 6 Was 9".

Kim,
Nice pic. Nice purchase. I'm jealous.

Bob and John,
I never got into any of the bands session notes and for some reason never thought of Jimi playing bass. Thx for the info.
