Mel; Jimmy & I feel the same way about Big Maybelle, one of our most favorites! Way back in the day she & Jimmy use to trade off songs on different nights on stage. I personally feel she is the only one who comes close to phrasing like Jimmy. S.S.

Soulsister,
that is pure magic,
I am afraid that I am not very well up on Jimmy's material(yet)
Anyone that has traded of songs with Maybelle says it all.
I am looking into the works of Mr.Scott and cannot wait until I finally have the honour and pleasure to hear his music.
As I stated before,
I thought this was the same Mr.Scott that recorded on the Giant Label.
And am really looking forward to his material.
By the way Soulsister did you ever dig out Maybelle's stunning vocal's on her version of 'Black is Black'?
Along with Maybelle,
I really am into (Little)Esther Philips and the outstanding Bessie Smith.
Many thanks for the great info you have given Soulsister.
Appreciated.
MEL.

Mel'Yes, I agree! I'm getting a new scanner, hopefully I'll have time this week to get out, once I do I'll scan you the discography list. In the meantime If I may make a suggestion for an age span on CD I would reccomend the following:
Everybodys Somebodys Fool-Decca-1950&52.
Savoy boxed-set(with 9 Royal Roost cuts)1951-1976.
Falling In Love Is Wonderful (blocked masterpiece on Ray Charles label for 40 years)now out on Rhino & Warner Jazz. Critics feel this is his best.1962.
Lost and Found-Atlantic/Rhino 1969&72. I personally feel this is his best, voice & emotions at full peak.
All The Way-Sire/Warner 1992, his comeback grammy nominated album. To me the best of his comeback years.
But Beautiful-Milestone/Fantasy 2001.
Europeans & youger folks like the CD with songs written by Rock Artists that Jimmy interpited in his own unique laid-back behind the beat style entitled Holding Back The Years-Artists Only!Records 1998. Gotta go pick the dog up at the vet, we board her there when we're on the road.
Take Care, S.S.

Soulsister,
a few facts etc that I have dug out about Mr.Jimmy Scott,
please rectify any errors and apologies if any.
with thanks to my good buddy Frankiej.
The Legendary Little Jimmy Scott.
Worked with Lionel Hampton.
First hit was 'everybody's somebody's fool' for (NOT SURE OF LABEL)was it Universal Records?
Recorded for SAVOY recrds
hence the Big Maybelle Connection.
Worked with Charlie'Bird'Parker.
Cut the record 'falling in love is wonderful'for Ray Charles Tangerine Label.
Recorded 2 albums for Atlantic Records.
Doc Pomus wrote an open letter to a well known music paper stating how disgusted that a singer of Mr.Scotts talents was being widely ignored(at that time).
Mr.Scott sang at Doc Pomus's funeral.
Cut an album called 'all the way'.
Sang John Lennon's 'starting over' in the Ethan Hawks movie, and big fans include Madonna,Bruce Springsteen and Lou Reed and also appeared in Twin Peaks.
Big Maybelle learned a lot from Mr.Scott.
Well Soulsister,
that is just after a day of research, thanks to my good buddy Frankiej.
Once more ,
Apologies for any errors,
I am now about to listen to the following tracks,
'when did you leave heaven'
and
'I'll be seeing you'.
Regards
mel(andthensome).

Mel; In answer to to corected info: Universal in Chicago in the 40s deal never materialized. Jimmy's first recording with Lionel Hampton's Orchestra was"Ëverybodys Somebodys Fool"was on Decca-1949.
Doc Pomus'letter was to Billboard Nov.1987, Doc came to see Jimmy perform at The Baby Grand in NYC in 1945 and they became good friends from then on, aside from Big Joe Turner, Jimmy was Doc's favorite singer. We just did a documentry about Doc's life with Lou Reed. & Joel Dorn that Doc's daughter Sharon Felder put together at her loft in NYC last Oct. Sharon called me yesterday, she's a wonderful person & good friend, she also shot the photos for the "Äll The Way"CD jacket. Jimmy sang a haunting version of Doc's (& my) favorite song "Someone To Watch Over Me" at Doc's funeral, Seymore Stein was so overcome with Jimmy's voice that he practically signed him on the spot! What Doc couldn't get the industry to do in life (during the late 80s) He accomplished in his transition on the road to heaven.
In Ethan's directoral debut in movie "Chelsea Walls", Jimmy sang "Jealous Guy". Ethan was worried Oko Yono would want a million dollars for the use of the song but when she found out Jimmy was the one singing it, she said Oh, he can have the song John always loved Jimmy's singing! There's also some confusion about whether or not John Lennon was at Jimmy's recording session in 1969 when Jimmy recorded "Long and Winding Road"(?)..Jimmy says yes John & another guy were inconspicuosly in the backroom, Joel says no, he didn't see him, so who knows? Anyway "Jealous Guy"on Jimmy's "Holding Back The Years"CD is one of the most requested live in Europe & South America, they love it here too, Jimmy does a duet with piano live version, its quite moving to experience
Twin Peaks: Jimmy was the singing ghost in the final episode "Fire Walk With Me", he sang "Sicamore Trees".
Joe Pesci (who I might add is a great singer and a very close friend of ours) paterned his style after Jimmy. Joe & Frankie Valli (while in The 4 Lovers before 4 Seasons & during) use to follow Jimmy to his "gigs"in Newark,N.J. and visit Jimmy at his home to pick his brain about singing Jimmy was & still is their idol. Joe loves Jimmy alot, he's always been a loyal friend thru the years. Joe can sing his butt off too! He'll often show up at Jimmy's gigs with a bunch of celebrities in tow.
Don't know which version of "When Did You Leave Heaven"your listening to but I think the Savoy track is the best. Hope you enjoy listening. Thanks for your support, Jimmy appreciates every individual who supports him, at his age (77) he's grateful to still be here still singing & touring the world, so many of the artists are not around anymore or not able to work anymore and thats sad.
I'll also scan photos when I get my scanner tho'not sure how that will work, I have so many personal photos from back in the day of alot of artists as well as promo shots and recent photos of some too not to mention all of Jimmy's pics! SMILE... Signing off for now, S.S.

Soulsister,
wow(andthensome)
just shows you my ignorance with not being into the jazz scene. The things I am missing here.
I was told that about the John and yoko thing but didnt want to mention it in case it was very personal etc.
Know wonder Mr.Scott is such a Legend,
he has certainly been there with the best and thats no doubt.
And still going strong at 77,fantastic!!!
Doc pomus, big maybelle,Lionel Hamptonthe list is full of so many great great artists.
And wham, you hit me with yet another of my big big favourite singers,
Big Joe Turner.(flip flop and fly, corrina, corrina, chicken&the hawk, shake rattle etc and Pete Johnson on the ol'Joanna,)
This is just too much.
After hearing those tracks I mentioned then I now know why Mr.Scott is the Legend he is.
I for one have now been turned on to his marvellous material and please relay my best wishes to him.
Well Soulsister,
I will let you be(for now)
and will be eagerly awaiting anything more you may pass on regards the works and life of a truly remarkable man.
Regards
mel.

p.s.
also regards to your soulful hound,
'lil'pooch'.

Mel ; Jimmy says thanks for all the nice comments. Lil'Pooch's name is actually "Princess"and beleive me she is truly Jimmy's spoiled little princess! She's a Pug dog purchased for Jimmy by Melodie MacDonald the director & good friend of Madonna, she directed Bravo Profiles: Jazz Masters The Life Of Little Jimmy Scott in 1998. I personally prefer the big dogs, I used to have a kennel with a wolf pack, also raised & trained German Shepherds, Akitas, & Alaskan Malamutes for exhibition shows, trials,& theatrical work, but thats another story, another one of my many lifetimes. Got run Jimmy is buggin'me to go to the store. Be back later (smile)!

Mel: back! Hey I'm no jazz expert either with the exception of Jimmy, he & some of the media call me the walking encyclepedia of Jimmy Scott. I guess thats because sometimes Jimmy forgets dates & things and have to refer to me, I probably truly know him in everyway better than anyone else in this world.
I'm a lightweight student when it comes to jazz tho'. I first became aware of who Jimmy was, in the 60s but that was thru the R&B scene, lots of Jimmy's songs have been catagorized as blues, r&b, and soul, Jimmy himself always said he was a jazz singer, thats more clear today than it was in the 50s or 60s. S.S.

Many thanks Soulsister,
thats good to hear regards you heard of Jimmy through the RnB Scene.
Although I am not to well up on RnB Either,
at least its a start for me.
I have a few reading items from eras like the 20's to the present day.
And as Rare/Northern Soul is my ultimate true passion I just know that I have over looked Mr.Scotts work from the various times I have read the books etc.
Because I just know that some of the earlier books etc are going to just hit me right on the kisser when I next dig them out.
Apologies,
also the present day books as well.
Have just dug out
Doc Pomus and his 'Too much boogie'

I also have a compilation of the Blues etc from its origins to present day,
which all are in Magazine and Compact Disc form.
A collection of info and music of over 120 mags and cds.
So Apart from all other material I have,
I shall be closely looking through these plus the small amount of Jazz info I have.

But I have a good and wide selection of RnB Which shall be closely eyed.
As always
my thanks for your time.
mel.
p.s.
the version I heard of 'when did you leave heaven'
was the Savoy cut.
