Guess who emailed me? Jerry Corbetta the lead singer of Sugarloaf!!!!! I told him how much I loved the song Green Eyed Lady do you all remember that? It had one of the greatest guitar lines I ever heard!!!! I have seen him twice and he is great. He filled in as a Four Season for a while in the 80s and Bob Crewe was the best man at his wedding....One thing I didnt know is that he was one of the musicians on Get Dancin by our dear friend Monti Rock (Disco Tex and the SexOlettes).....we discussed that song on another thread as I remember. That was one of my favorite records of all time!!!! Here are some of the best 70s bands in my opinion...

Atlanta Rhythm Section
Sugarloaf
Ambrosia
KC and the Sunshine Band
Aerosmith
Led Zepplin
I HATE EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER!!!
and my favorite of all time is the Moody Blues!!

Steph,
Did Jerry mention that he is now playing with The Rock And Roll All Stars along with Peter Rivera formerly of Rare Earth? As part of their act they do a Four Seasons song. Jerry sounds better than Frankie.I try and get together with these guys once or twice a year. If they ever come into your area by all means go see them.

I have a picture of Jerry, Russ, Pete and me taken last June. It was sent to me as a ZIP file and David wasn't able to do anything with it so I haven't a clue how I could post it here.

Sugarloaf had a very good, hook laden single in '75, "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" that should of charted better than it did. Big regional hit around Denver, where, I think, the band was based.

Let's toss into the mix...
The Allman Brothers Band
Pink Floyd

The '70's were a trying time for music. The decline of Top 40 radio I grew up with, and the almost complete collpase of the inventive side of "progressive" rock.....

Doug,
" Don't Call Us " is also part of the All Stars show.

Ralph....
....they got this summer's tour schedule out yet? They were out this way a couple years ago, and I missed them.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Davie Gordon (193.122.21.26) on Sunday, May 11, 2003 - 02:15 pm:

Douglas,

You're right, Sugarloaf were from Denver.

I used to have all their albums - excellent stuff
especially the first one and the "Don't Call Us.."
album.

Ralph,
If you unzip the file then send it as an e-mail
attachment it should get through to David OK.
What he does with it then I have absolutely no
idea :-)

Is Mike Pinera still with the All Stars ? I saw
him when he was in Iron Butterfly, the first
big name US band I saw, more years ago than I
care to think about.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ralph (209.240.198.62) on Sunday, May 11, 2003 - 02:23 pm:

Doug,
I'm not sure what the band's schedule is for the Summer. When I was in L. A for the Brother's concert I was supposed to get together with Pete but then we had to leave town a day early so I missed him.

Davie,
I sent the entire e-mail to David but for some reason he couldn't open the file.
Yes, Mike Pinera is still with the band. It's a great show and if they come to your area I recommend seeing them.

A dino-rock thread & still no mention of Led Zeppelin... how about that? I used to really like 'em, than I started listening (well, over hearing, perhaps) Zep all day, every day on Q-One-Oh-Zeppelin (Q107), now I'm sort of sick of 'em... the last rock n roll things I've been playing have been Lou Reed's Rock n Roll Animal, Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid' and a live Guess Who tape...

Led Zep have this fantastic 2 DVD set coming out at the end of the month. I saw Jimmy Page yesterday evening live on a french show to promote this thing and the live clip of Kashmir just blew my mind... this song just transcends musical barriers...

My subjective take on classic rock circa early 70's was Led Zep, Rolling Stones, Spirit, Deep Purple, Creedence, a couple of early Alice Cooper("Love It To Death" and "Killer"), the Who. My tastes then took a debatable turn toward Anglo-centric stuff: David Bowie, Roxy Music, T. Rex, and a host of prog rockers that I'm way too ashamed to admit here. Around '76, I got back on track with more eclectic fare (read:less commercial). Roots and r&b lovin Brits like Graham Parker, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Elvis Costello helped usher in the best of punk like the Ramones and the Clash. In fact it was through Dave Edmunds that I was inspired to go out and purchase Elvis's "Sun Sessions", which started a whole 'nother personal revolution in music for me. Can't forget to mention American acts like Talking Heads,Dwight Twilley, and Blondie. Again, subjectively speaking, the last great rock and roll band from the true classic rock era was the Pretenders.

What they are calling classic rock radio today is primarily those eight minute, draggy ass, no hook Pink Floyd songs and the now totally crisp Led Zepplin non-flippin stop. How did the best of that era of rock come to be dominated by the mediorce likes of Styx, Journey, and their lame 80's brethren like Rush and Metallica? Classic Rock radio has mutated inro Mullet Rock radio. People that actually had good taste in music during that era are certainly out of luck as a listener now. But, come to think of it, not listening to too much radio even back then and plotting my own course helped give me better taste in music anyway, IMHO.
Peace y'all.
John

I dont really hate ELandPalmer like I said they are just too pretentious for me if you are going to be pretentious get it right like Procol Harum and the Moody Blues..

John.....
.....I wonder if '70's rock hit its peak in the late '60's, when the 3 minute form was still big, and bands like the Blues Magoos, Smith, Sly and the Family Stone and Fever Tree were hitting the charts with really inventive stuff. I dusted off my LP of the Airplane's "Surrelistic Pillow" from '67. Out of the 11 cuts, only one is over 5 minutes, none other over 3:39, with "White Rabbit" clocking in at all of 2:27. This stuff has gotten lost. Too old (or in many cases obscure) for "Classic Rock", too new (or hard) for Oldies radio.

Tongue In Cheek by Sugarloaf was the last "45" I purchased.

Best of the 70's for me - Radio City by Big Star.

Most Fun 70's Band - Slade

ErikT.O.- Yes - the guitars of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter Rock!

Any Brits out there know of an band called Eddie And The Hot Rods? I really liked them but can't find any CD reissues. They did Get Out Of Denver twice as fast as Seger.

Top of pageBottom of page   By john dixon (64.12.97.7) on Monday, May 12, 2003 - 03:57 pm:

doug, good point re: the death of the three minute single as an artform although punk and new wave did shorten those song lengths again for awhile. As Nick Lowe said of his label bosses at Stiff on "I Love My Label": "They always ask for lots of songs/but no more than 2:50 long/so I write 'em some." I had that Fever Tree LP too but can't remember much about it, sadly; was there a hit on it?

john c, thanks for reminding me of Big Star. I loved "Number 1 Record" and "Radio City". I think Big Star's more straight ahead Beatle-esque material was a precursor to Dwight Twilley and, a little later, Marshall Crenshaw. I still have this new wave sampler that contains Eddie & the Hot Rods' "Do Anything You Wanna Do" that was quite the anthem at the time. I never heard their version of Seger's "Get Out Of Denver" but wonder if it was as fast as Dave Edmunds' jet propelled cover.

Talk about rock and roll anthems for the ages, does anyone remember Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers "Roadrunner"? ("Driving faster miles an hour") Great big ole singalong dumb fun...

John....
....."Out there it's Summertime, Milk and honey days....."
"San Francisco Girls (Return Of The Native)"--Fever Tree.
Wildly creative for its time. Fuzz guitar emulating a sitar, hard and soft passages, flute lead. Could detect elements of the 13th Floor Elevators in it..both Texas bands.
To illustrate my point, when was the last time you heard "Riki-Tiki-Tavi" or "Barabajackel" on the radio?

John ;
I fondly remember "Roadrunner"...and 'Pablo Picasso', Girlfriend (G-i-r-l-f-r-e-n) and the rest. I got a refresher course a couple years back when my son was 18 or so. He got into a SERIOUS Modern Lovers thing for awhile.

Ya know, that's just another way I've been so fortunate in my life. I can't imagine what torture it must be for parents who have kids (or vice versa)whose taste in music sickens them. My music-headed son has tastes so similar to mine; the only real differences are in level of affection (I like the Clash - he LOVES 'em)....

SteveK,
So your son is into the Modern Lovers AND the Clash and still more that don't make you want to retch? Well, you're pretty blessed as far as music that you have to tolerate goes...

John;
Yeah, it's wild - his mainstays are Beatles, Sly , Hendrix, Stones , Sonny Sharrock (!), Camper Van Beethoven, P Funk, Velvet Underground.. and now the SITSOM soundtrack...and REALLY into the Spirit "Family that Plays Together" lp. Digs vinyl , too , not just a digital head.....very tolerable.

I remember hearing "Green Eyed Lady" all over the radio in Rochester NY when I was younger - it was a #1 record in Upstate NY.

The single and Sugarloaf's debut album were two of the last records released under the Liberty Records banner - before the label was folded into United Artists.
I prefer hearing the album version with Corbetta's great organ solo (and the sucker clocked in at 6:49!).
