I seem to keep coming back to this one.....
.....The Buckinghams. Nice, snappy, tight arranging. I wonder if Chicago used them for a model?

To bring myself back towards the "soulful" end of the spectrum.....
....whoever did the arranging on James Cotton's first 2 Verve LP's in '68 deserves some points, especially for the way they augment Luther Tucker's wonderful guitar work.

Lars beat me to it but I was going to mention "Vehicle" by the Ides Of March as a dramatic brass opening. Also "Soulfinger" by the Barkays and Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music". The horn arrangement for Otis Redding's "I Can't Turn You Loose" became the theme song, of sorts, for the Blues Brothers Band.

Stu, would this also include any songs with 'non-descript' brass?
I think one of the most beautiful arrangements with horns I've ever likened in one particular (R&B) song, well... it would have to be Lionel Ritchie's 1977 'Motown' hit titled... "Zoom."
The brass arrangement can be heard along with the accompanied beautiful 'strings'... heard all thruout the entire 8 minute song, those horns, and the lyrics are simply (to me) an 'inspiration' to listen to, it puts one in a 'positive' and 'pensive' mood (at least it does me) every time I hear it... as only Lionel Ritchie could have only sang it-- as he did.
Whatever the 'mood' it sets me in, and for whatever obvious personal reason that it does... if there is one song that I can really, really get into, it has to be this one... "Zoom", by Lionel Ritchie.

WE COULD MAKE AN EXCEPTION FOR YOU JIM!!!...BY NON-DESCRIPT...DO YOU MEAN FRENCH HORNS...TROMBONES...ETC???...I'LL HAVE TO CHECK THAT ONE OUT...AS I DON'T RECALL THE TUNE OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD!!!...STU

Not really... it just the horns arrangement in Ritchie's "Zoom" is, how can I describe this... the 'brass' heard is intensely 'soft', 'mellow', and, they just don't "scream" at all.
