Funkyone, so far I think everyone mentioned has been somewhat of a stretch. All due respect to Ms. Parton however who is, in my opinion, a total pro.

How about the Jackson Five, "I want You Back", I know they recorded for Steeltown records out of Gary Indiana before Motown ,but their song Big Boy was a regional hit only and I dont remember them having an album, but of course I could be wrong.

Correction on Helen Reddy: she did have a decent-sized hit before "I Am Woman" with her rendition of "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from "Jesus Christ, Superstar" (though she actually split a hit on that one with the competing version from Yvonne Elliman).
In defense of Stella Parton--I thought her songs were fantastic! I remember hearing them on country radio when they came out. Of course, Dolly is the more musically talented sister, but I always dug Stella's music.
Best,
Mark
