I recently got their cd and a lot of the songs are great. They are proably most know for their remake of the Temprees song "Come And Get Your Love". The group is also Native American which ads a unique flavor to their songs.

I haven't got one of their collections but you've given me the idea that I should; I always thought that Pat and Lolly Vegas were fine songwriters and very soulful singers. My favorite Redbone song is "Maggie" but "Witch Queen Of New Orleans" is good too. Dave Edmunds used to do a great version of their song, "JuJu Man". They deserved much more commercial success than they actually got. Think I'll peruse the used CD online shopping spots(half.com, secondspin.com, are there any others?)and find the best deal I can for a Redbone anthology; thanks for giving me the idea MotownMan!

Motownman,

It's the other way around, the Temprees is the later version, the song's a Redbone original.

Redbone were a great band - there have been a few compilations of their work but all off them seem to miss some of my favourite tracks. I see that
Sony issued a comp. last year but haven't seen it as yet - I guess its chances of getting a UK
release are remote.

I'd love to see a detailed interview with the Vegas brothers, they've been around since the
early sixties and must have some interesting stories to tell as they were, as far as I know,
the first Native Americans to have much success
in the pop / rock field.

Stephanie,

I hadn't actually forgotten Buffy - it's just I tend to think of her as a folkie rather than a
pop/rock artist. Still, credit to a pioneer.

Brothers Patrick & Lolly Vegas had been in the music business since the early 1960s.

They were in the house band on ABC-TV's Shindig! along with pianist Leon Russell and organist Billy Preston. The Vegas Brothers also had a guest shot in the film "It's A Bikini World."

In 1967, their composition "Niki Hokey" was recorded by P.J. Proby and released on Imperial - it charted at #23 on the Hot 100.

By 1970, they formed Redbone and were signed to Epic Records. "Maggie" & "The Witch Queen of New Orleans" were their first few hits.

"Come & Get Your Love" was their biggest smash (#5 Pop, #75 R&B)

Collectables Records issued a Redbone Golden Classics which contains their Epic/Sony masters (although I would be careful about the mastering quality). There is a three-disc Rock Artifact collection Sony Music issued that contains the three singles I mentioned

Thanks for sharing Mark's insightful write-up on Redbone.
When I was younger, I remember seeing Redbone on American Bandstand (when Dick Clark showed off their Gold Record for "Come & Get Your Love")and the Midnight Special. Pat, Lolly, Butch & Joe were very proud of their Native American roots and it showed from their clothing to their music.
I still have the "Wovoka" album my family bought and it's among my favorite records of all time.

Here's a good Redbone fansite - it's from Denmark
but fortunately it's in English.

One of the reasons why "Come and Get Your Love" is such a great sounding record is because it's got the Gold Star echo chamber on it..
