Alrighty Gang here we go again!
If I were chosen as a Goddess of Music, I believe I would change a lot of uneccessary(?)"NOISE" that a lot of people CALL Music.
I just may B a bit like Simon on U know that show about--Idols? LOL-If a person couldn't carry a tune from here 2 there, they wouldn't get behind a Mic.
If a person couldn't handle & play an instrument N a decent form or fashion, they would have 2 keep their fingers, hands and lips 2 themselves instead of torchering a guitar, drums, horns etc. and using it 4 a noise box. At one time, musicians respected Music & the Instruments that were used 2 make the sounds of Music. Some Musicians even loved their Instrument so much, they gave it a name: Ex-"Lucille is BB Kings' Guitar...But with all this Pro Tools & modern technology stuff, I guess just maybe Instruments R obselete..is that so..tell me it isn't so.
We do still have some REAL Musicians out there don't we?????? uh oh!

Sure ,there are lot's of fantastic musicians out there in all genres of music. However good luck forcing your, mine or anyone else's taste on the general public, especially kids. You just aren't going to see what you think is talent in,videos,on the radio or at the next big stadium tour. You have to work to seek it out and then support the hell out of it.None of the true artists are going to make millions anymore and the true artists don't care. Most can do quite well in a smaller market and stay truer to the game in the process.Go out and see them live EVERY time them play a bar our club in your area, buy their CD's even if they charge more than a major label release.Buy extras to give as gifts.Start promoting them yourself by mentioning them in every e-mail(don't spam, just when you are talking to someone).Today's major label music wasn't designed for our enjoyment,it was designed for our consumption and to have a limited life.Something you just had to have after hearing the single 40+ times a day on the radio and TV.High turnover and volume of units, not quality or artistry of music. It's the Music BUSINESS!Has been for a long time(pre-Motown)After a couple of months you see through the deception and they have already pre-programmed you for 20 more CD's you just have to have.I stopped listening to commercial radio and watching music videos and you would be shocked to see how much my spending has dropped over the past 5 years.I still check out new music, but listen to it as many times as.> I <want without being brainwashed by radio or TV.Sure there is still the occasional commercial that sucks me in through repetition, but I am no longer having my mind made up for me.I don't dismiss everything just because it's new, different, from a major label or the artist doesn't have the same caliber of talent as our legends.

I mentioned my favorite band from the first day I landed here, LMT CONNECTION featuring Leroy Emanuel of The (Fabulous) Counts www.lmtconnection.com
Their first CD was recorded and mixed at Studio A in Deeeee-troit.Full horn section and great music. The second is a live CD with covers and originals recorded in Niagara Falls,Canada. They have a new double CD that should be out shortly as well as a recently unearthed and restored Counts album.
Why do I go on and on about these guys?Yes I work with them on occasion, but don't work for them and have never been paid or compensated with anything but some great music and stories from them. That's what I'm talking about, adopt a group today.I know Lexuses77 has Lisa Gay & Thrill in L.A.,someone else waves the flag for Sonnyboy and Carlton J. Smith in NYC,Y'all here are making sure The Funks are never forgotten again,Rob Bowman's making sure of the same for Stax,Bobby Eli's got the Philly torch,Let's start hearing about some indie and forgotten artists who either have new product out or are coming to a town near you! These acts don't have billion dollar promotional budgets,so let's make sure everyone knows about them.

Respect to those who give it,

D.J. $ BILL

I know ...this topic is just something 2 keep the forum going..LMAO, I'm not that crazy, just something 2 talk about, that's all. It's fun just 2 C how everyone responds if they could change anything...believe it or not, yess, I do like a lot of the new stuff. LOL
(betcha didn't know that, did ya)?

I know ,I wasn't bashing your post by any means Medusa. It's just there is so much great music out there that we haven't heard about and to dismiss todays music just based on the mainsteam is unfair to the wealth of exellent new music ou there.I know you are just creating discussion, but it is so easy to focus on the negative aspects of todays music, that's been going on since the days of the classical masters.Thom(Bell?) I too gave up on Rap for a long while, but once again if you search for it there are some great positive Hip Hop acts out there some even being backed up by live talented musicians, there are others who are creativly using samples, properly crediting their sources and making sure the original artist is paid and given the exposure they deserve. When the current industry dies or wakes up,we will be able to decide on the merits of an artist without their multi million dollar promotions and payola practices. There are guys like Harry Weinger doing some great things, but if you think Universal shares his vision because they love the music...

I'll second that emotion.Same thing goes for classic artists that feel they need to have booty girls on stage to keep us entertained. If you can't hold your own,no amount of hot panted, high thong wearing hoochie coochie is going to change my opinion. That's just me though and we all know sex sells.

Dont get me started on this subject so I will keep it nice and to the point and with a degree of decorum.
First I would have a mass firing of all of the "a&r types" responsible for these signings and then I would hire a team of people to work with the companies to screen personnel with legitamite credentials who could be discerning and have enough musical taste and experience to
bring back great songs and great acts to the forefront.

I would have all of the luxury car dealerships run criminal background checks on people who wish to pay cash for their vehicles.

I would bring back the concept of "artist development"

I would make sure that individuality prevails and that singing in tune without artificial means must be evident.

I would "keep it real" by bringing back the concept of real musicians playing real music for real.

I would sign all of the classic artists who truly deserve to be heard once again by the masses and "make sure" that radio embraces them, capice???

I'd get rid of standardized format commercial radio. Go back to they days of local/regional programming and letting DJs play what they want and not what they are dictated to. Then you'd have an environment that would be more conducive to independent record companies having a chance at being successful and in turn promoting more artists.

Jim

Ahh yes Jim that would be great, however now that there are few independent radio stations, free thinking is discouraged and it's all about revenues. They don't care where those revenues come from, whether it's advertising or"independent" promoters offering cash for more spins. The glorious free spirited ,for the love of music days are gone and have been replace by a series of formulas. The only thing they can't calculate is true emotions, but they have certainly figured out how to elict false ones good enough to fool most.Meanwhile here I am with a name like D.J. Dollar Bill complaining about how some people gotta have it,cash money, dollar bill y'all. There's a reason and it's not because I have or desire a wealthy lifestyle.Another story ,another time

Top of pageBottom of page   By Kdubya (206.126.224.7) on Sunday, May 11, 2003 - 12:03 pm:

I would change the state of radio. I would open up playlists to include those artists (mainly indies) who deserve to be heard. One of the reasons that the so called rap/bling-bling music is so dominating is the way the companys "buy" and promote the artists themselves. I'd certainly find a purgatory for all those men and women. I agree with "Dunn". The DJ's of old were always in competiton, by trying to get us the listener to hear something "new" and when they were sucessful, it was more than enough reason to tune in to their show. There is not any compelling reason to listen to radio anymore. Its a dam shame.

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Monday, May 12, 2003 - 01:38 pm:

What would I do....first of all:
1) Form an allegance with Bobby Eli, John Dixon, Ralph Terrana, Clay McMurray, Deke Richards, Stu Miller (Stubass) and his brother, Harry Weinger & Scratcher to revamp the recording industry, instill quality control & artist development and hold sales/marketing accountable for selling the music (if the stuff is good and a sales person has a problem selling - then it ain't the talent's problem).
2) Take all the monopolizing radio conglomerates and blow 'em sky-high. Ditto Jim Dunn's comments.
3) Have a long, sitdown chat with MTV, VH1 and BET about programming.
4) Post this sign at all doors - NO JEANS, NO SNEAKERS, NO BOOTS, NO BAGGY CLOTHES AND NO HOOTCHIE-WEAR.
5) Create recording contracts that are fair to the artist and doesn't endenture them.

That's just for starters...if I keep going my phone bill will look crazy...

Hey Kevin,
I just had one of those wierd dreams again last night that I was re-opening Tera Shirma. That hasn't happened in a while. Anyway in this one there was some problem with the air conditioning and a couple of guys were up on a ladder doing some sort of complex looking repair involving much wiring. I decided to walk out to the lobby and passed several people I didn't know. I remember thinking that at least business was good.

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Monday, May 12, 2003 - 02:39 pm:

Hey Ralph:
Maybe it wasn't a dream...
I'm dead serious about forming this allegance. With all the talent we have from those who post on this website and how the music industry has gone to hell, I'm ready to pull the Generals & Lieutenants together. If we can focus on making quality pop/soul music and nuturing strong talented acts for an audience that wants it (and God knows we have that audience here on S.D.), the mediocrity that is out there would fall quicker than stones.

Yea Kev, we could send press releases to the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons)magazine and give seniors a 10 percent discount if they purchase on a Wednesday.

Don't laugh at the AARP idea. The magazine has the largest circulation of any in America (35 million). Jack Nicholson is on the cover this month. They (AARP) let people join in their forties now. I have no idea how they get your name and address but they're relentless; they mailed me twice a week before I gave in and became a member.

The label I started here in NYC is targeting listeners 28 to 54 - so your plan is a great one. I would have no problem doing some kind of advertising with AARP or sample mailing.

Stubass:
Geez..."ego control"...I may need your help and Jim Feliciano's as well on this one!
