Let me say hello to everyone. I am fairly new to the site, and I have enjoyed everything i've seen so far. This is truly a wonderful site. To my question, I remember a friend telling me that she read a southern soul book that had a quote from O.V. Wright saying something to the effect that he wished that he sang like James Carr. When she told me this I was in utter amazement. These men are two of the greatest soul singers ever and O.V. Wright wishes he sounded like James Carr. I would like to know what you guys think about this, if you have any opinions, I would really love to hear them.

Thanks Again
T.L.

What can you say? One listen to either of these
southern soul men and you know each is in a league
of his own. My absolute favorite by either would
have to be "Ace Of Spade" by O.V. The CD reissue
I've heard left the whole second verse out of
the song!!!!! How could they? Anyone know of an
O.V. Wright CD with the unedited original 45
version?

Randy,

Hadn't heard of the missing verse in "Ace Of Spades" before - I take it you have the comp.
CD that MCA put out about ten years ago ?

I've got a recent-ish UK comp called "O V Wright
: Giant of Southern Soul" which has more tracks than the US comp. I don't know the record well enough to know if there's a verse missing but if you tell me what the opening line of verse 2 is
I'll check it against my CD and let you know.

T L,
Welcome to Soulful Detroit. I think you probably realize by now that barely NO questions go unanswered here.

The 2nd verse: There are some men who call them-
selves a king, all they want out of life is
a Cadallac and a diamond ring. There are weaker
men who call themselves a jack, they fall in
love and like a fool they never get back---

Then it goes...From the 9 to the 10...

Which is there on the MCA release, but those
two lines about the king & the jack are missing!
We had the original 45 on Backbeat.

Randy,

Managed to find my O V Wright CD - the lines
missing from the MCA cd issue of "Ace of Spades"
are present on the Connoisseur Collection CD.

Whoever mastered the US CD either didn't listen to a playback or wasn't familiar with the track -
or both.

Thanks Davie, That missing verse of my favorite O.V. Wright song, just ruins that CD so I still have to play my 45.I'll see if I can find the other CD somewhere.
