Ralph.....the house looks good too!!!

How wonderful it must be to be able to just drive past Hitsville USA - it beats those old buildings that I have to pass everyday...Bank Of England, Tower Bridge, St Pauls Cathedral!!!

Seeing this really was uplifting.. Walked up to the house and stood there for a few seconds checking out the paint job up close.

These guys were doing a great job.. paying attention to details while moving right along.

The money they receive does seem to be going to good use. The inside is excellently maintained -just wish they'd let Mike and I make the studio work again..

That would be great if the "Snakepit" was operating again, just like we saw it in SITSOM.

Hi John Lester!
You stated, quote, "how wonderful it must be to be able to just drive past Hitsville USA..."....

You know, I happen to work for Lear Corporation in the city's north end near the Davison Exchange, and, I travel home every day on the southbound Lodge Freeway as I travel towards downtown Detroit.

But there had been many, many times I veered off the Lodge to get off the W. Grand Blvd. ramp there as you can see Detroit's Henry Ford Hospital at the corner, I then hang a right turn unto W. Grand, towards 12th. Street and just there, within eye distance you can see the historic 'Hitsville USA'... across the street off to the driver's side, as I head home, heading west towards W. Vernor Hwy., or, towards southbound I-75.

Yes, John... looking at it, it's just a wonderful feeling to be able to just drive past that house at 2648 W. Grand Blvd., at any given time, or at any given moment, whenever I want... and whenever I feel like it.

And I've done that so many times on my way home, just to take a glance at the house that made the 'sound', as it was then (in the 1960s), and, as it is now... a Detroit 'hit-making' legend.

I drive past Hitsville for inspiration a lot. When I stayed on The Boulevard and took my daily walk I'd go past Hitsville and down to the GM building and back (while listening to Motown or even Jackie Wilson on headphones). Great inspiration!

The recording console in the building now is not the one they actually used, is it?

Let's get the history of the recording consoles of Hitsville! I know we may have heard the stories before, but c'mon, tell us again!

Jim

I might even think about learning to drive again. I don't use my car in London these days cos it takes me too long to find somewhere to park!

At least you and Julian appreciate how lucky you both are!

the first recording equipment put in there came from B-B Productions which was owned by Bristoe Bryant(a DJ on radio station WJLB)Berry purchased his equipment around August 1959. The console was a 1939 Western Electric radio board Earlier that year the Falcon's cut "You're So Fine" on that same equipment at the B-B studio.

More, more! What came next?

Ron

Is that the one which is in the museum today?

I look at the old pics and wonder.

Top of pageBottom of page   By David Meikle (62.252.128.6) on Friday, May 09, 2003 - 04:03 pm:

Wrong question! Sorry Ron

Does anyone know if the console used in mid 65
is the one in the museum today?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ron Murphy (68.42.89.162) on Friday, May 09, 2003 - 05:48 pm:

The one there now is the old radio console with some add-ons. now the one you're refering to I believe is the one that was sold to Sound Inc. up in New Haven,Michigan. Now that place closed down in the 80's

Was the B-B studio on Forest?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ron Murphy (68.42.89.162) on Friday, May 09, 2003 - 08:37 pm:

Fury13: yes in the basement. I remember calling there to find out how much it was to cut a record whoever answered the phone said "sorry we sold our equipment to Motown ' Marv Johnson said he helped carry that stuff in at Hitsville around august of 1959
