I recently went to the Museum Of Television And
Radio and saw a L.A. dance show from 1967 called
" Shebang". The show was based on a tribute to
Motown and it's guest stars were, Brenda Holloway
singing, " When I'm Gone" and her new release,
"Just Look What You Have Done" (one of my favorites by her) and the Temptin' Temptations
performing, " My Girl", " Beauty Is Only Skin
Deep", and " Ain't Too Proud To Beg", doing
their amazing steps !!! Casey Kasem was the host
and the show also featured a dance contest.
I love it !!!!! I just wish the museum had more
episodes. Do any one on SD remember this particular show in the L.A area ?????

Chancellor:
"Shebang!" was a LA-based rock music show that came from the Dick Clark Productions stable. It aired from 1965 to 1968 (the show was also in limited syndication).

Casey Kasem was indeed the host, prior to his "American Top 40" years.

"Shebang!" was also credited for its exposure of the West Coast music scene, especially the artists born & raised in East Los Angeles. Cannibal & the Headhunters and Thee Midnighters were "semi-regulars" on the show.

This was also around the time that Dick Clark
was producing quite a few shows like, "Where The
Action Is", and so forth. When the credits
appeared at the end of the show, Dick Clark
productions did appear.

Hey, what can be said? Dick Clark was Music Television before there was an MTV.

TV shows he had at that time:
American Bandstand (obviously)
It's Happening (later called Happening '68)
Missing Links (game show)
The Dick Clark Saturday Night Beechnut Show (ended in 1960)
Where The Action Is
Action '73 & '74 (1970s version of the WTAI hosted by Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods)

Busy guy, wasn't he...

Dick Clark could make a new fortune by marketing the videos of "Where The Action Is" & "Shebang".I've never seen Shebang...this silly little market did not want to corrupt us kids with that I guess.I missed many a school bus cause this Orlando hick town would have "Action" on at 7:30AM then would try & say that the ratings weren't good!! I'd love to see Brenda Holloway doing "Just Look What You Done" which is one of my all time favorite recordings.

Really looking forward to this one.

Tony:
Orlando aired "Where The Action Is" at 7:30AM!!!
The show was aired 4:00-4:15pm EST in Rochester & Pittsburgh (this according to my older brothers & sisters). I guess it didn't fall under the ABC-TV "must-carry" rules.

At least you got to see the show when it was fresh & new. We young'uns are stuck with kineoscopes!

David:
Don't be surprised that "Shebang!" is in black & white - many ABC-TV and Dick Clark-related programs didn't go color until September 1967 (Dick even admitted in one of his Bandstand-related books that "American Bandstand" was one of the last TV shows on the network to switch from B&W to color and that was in the fall of 1967).

Who remembers "The Lloyd Thaxton Show" and the weekday broadcasts of American Bandstand"? Those in the Chicago area should remember the original "Soul Train" that broadcast from the penthouse of the Board Of Trade building for one season (1970) until Don Cornelius moved the show to L.A. Chicagoans should also remember "Red Hot & Blues" with Big Bill Hill from the late '60s. There was also a local show called "Kiddie A Go-Go" from the '60s. I think it aired on WGN and was hosted by a lady named Pandora Mulqueen. It was a kiddie version of American Bandstand. I remember seeing The Buckinghams and The New Colony Six on that show.

I remember Lloyd Thaxton....it was wierd that he would sometimes lipsynch songs...He loved doing Marvin Gaye! That was on for awhile on Saturday afternoons. When "Action" first came on it was during the summer & everyday in the afternoons then Orlando started airing it at 7:30 in the mornings....luckily the school bus stop was across the street & my Mom would start yelling when she saw the bus.

Virtually every large American city had copy cat American Bandstand type shows. The larger ones had both white and African-American telecasts. I would love to get some of the black dance shows on tape because a lot of obscure, one and local hit artists appeared on them.

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Wednesday, May 07, 2003 - 11:56 am:

Gang:
I remember seeing many of Lloyd Thaxton's clips at the Musuem of Television & Radio as well as cable TV specials on rock & roll.

Scratcher is right, though. For example, Rochester, NY had a Bandstand-type TV show that was hosted by Jack Palvino, who years later hired me for my first radio gig in 1983. Unfortunately, many of these local shows were erased because the TV stations would reuse the videotape stock for other programs.

Tony:
You had a great Mom - make sure you buy her a VHS or DVD of Shindig! or Hullaballoo for Mother's Day! :)

Hey DVD Mike, you are so right about Lloyd Thaxton, it was a great afternoon show, I always thought of him as a mellow Chuck Barris. As memory serves they looked like kinfolk. Yes the original Soul Train with guest MC Clinton Ghent, Hullabaloo, Shindig, Big Bill Hill were all remnents of my youth. Those were the days.....thanks for the wake up..........and lets not forget Mike Douglas, this guy would have the Tempts one week and Gladys Knight the next...but what really impressed me about Mike Douglas was that he interviewed the guests and they would just sit around shooting the sshhhhhh like it was old home week. By the way Soul Train and Big Bill Hills show were on the new UHF network( channel 26 )which only had these shows and an occaisional Karate movie.......:-)

We had an American Bandstand type show in Miami
called Saturday Hop. One of the disc jockeys
from the radio was host--in one show the guests
were the Miracles (Smokey, Claudette, Ronnie &
Bobby) and the Cookies. Miracles did "Mickey's
Monkey". They also had a few phony artists--
you know when new artists came out no one knew
what they looked like: Bobby Boris Pickett of
Monster Mash was on--he was a black guy!!!!!!
Wayne Newton was on---he was a girl!!!!!
Maybe a phony booking agent booked them. You know
Wayne Newton sounded so much like a female. But
usually they were the real artists because Miami
was a hot spot for entertainment.

Hey Kevin, I have the videos of Shindig & Hullaballoo that matter.Back then there were only a few shows that "our" artist could be on.I'd love to see the "To Tell The Truth" show that the panel had to guess who of the 3 were the real Berry Gordy & then the Supremes came out. That must be from '65.

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Wednesday, May 07, 2003 - 06:41 pm:

Tony:
I hear you...The clip of Gordy & the Supremes on "To Tell The Truth" was aired on the Motown 25 special.

Kdubya:
You are soooo right about Mike Douglas! He had all the righteous guests on his show - Aretha Franklin (singing "That's Life" with Frankie Valli!), Jackie Wilson (performing "Higher & Higher"), the Jacksons (1976 - "Enjoy Yourself") and the Main Ingredient (with the late Donald McPherson on lead, singing "Spinning Around (I Must Be Falling In Love)"). How about Dinah Shore's daily show - she had Teddy Pendergrass & the Blue Notes WITHOUT Harold Melvin (the story was Harold's plane was late and the group, egged on by Teddy, went on without him) - they were singing (of all things) "Bad Luck"! Merv Griffin's show was great, too - Whitney Houston made her debut on his show with Clive Davis and Cissy Houston introducing her to "the world".

We can go on & on about this...

hey randy r., I remember when Wayne Newton used to be on the Jackie Gleason tv show frequently and, you're absolutely right, at the time , his voice was disturbingly high. It was not pleasing to hear or watch; he couldn't have been less cool.

I just recently saw the Shindig tape featuring Jackie Wilson and was knocked out. His reworked, slinky version of "Danny Boy" had me grinning from ear to ear. So very charismatic; after seeing all that footage it's easy to understand the 'the black Elvis' tag you often heard in connection with Jackie. One thing's for sure, Elvis didn't have nuthin' on Jackie.

My favorite memory of Shindig is when the Rolling Stones had Howlin' Wolf on the program and they sat at his feet like disciples. I kept thinking at the time "who is this old gravelly-voiced black man that the Rolling Stones think is so cool?" Then the boys "Little Red Rooster" and it was downright creepy. Brian Jones' slide guitar sent chills up my neck and Mick singing about dogs barkin and hounds howlin; it shook me up and I went out the very next day and bought "The Rolling Stones Now" LP.

I have A DVD of Hullabaloo, that has the Supremes and Marvin Gaye. Marvin sings (lip synchs) "How Sweet It Is" to a new backing track cut by West Coast musicians. Quite honestly, it (the backing track) sounds a bit like Sam Cooke and very unlike Motown. Anyways Marvin sings and dances with all the Hullabaloo Dancers including my favorite - Lada Edmund Jr. Wow! Could she move!

DVDMIKE - Have you ever gone downtown(Chicago) to the Museum of Broadcast Communications? It's in the Chicago Cultural Center on Michigan avenue. Clinton's show stayed around for a few years. One of the more memorable shows that Ghent hosted featured The Ebonys perfoming "Making Love Ain't No Fun (Without The One You Love").
