Here's a question for all the musicians in the crowd. Do any of you suffer certain ailments as a result of what you do. I have a tricky back. After a rather long hiatus I finally got back into the studio over the weekend. After spending many hours hunched over keyboards and the console I'm hurting. I forgot to stretch periodically. ( I know, I know Dar...I'll take something today ) Anyway...do any of you deal with studio or work related problems?

I know that I used to suffer from bad throat ailments and my ears would ring terribly after playing drums live and being responsible for set up and tear down of the drum equipment as well as playing a show.
But, now I take a multi-vitamin and I stop and get a good hot meal before playing. I have also been drinking a "Red Bull" sports drink or Power Ade and it helps tremendously. (NO ALCOHOL!!
I also sweat a lot and have found that putting a towel over my head and around my neck to keep the heat in helps as well.
I also use headphones when I play live and I have a submix sent to me so I dont have the ringing in my ears anymore. I also use a "bass shaker" that is attached to my drum throne so I dont have to "clobber" the drums like I used to!!
Anyway that is my thing...

HEY RALPH,the number one hazard we musicians have all encountered was, social disease's.YAA MAN,we were young and kool and dug playing in a band in the local toilets(BARS)night clubs, dances, where ever, and even on the road and always had the girls,RIGHT?.I became a regular kustomer with penicilin. But what bothers me today is,everywhere all us musicians, singers, etc.played at, whether they were bars, niteklubs, banquetes, parties, etc.the places were always smoked filled, and I have never heard of any entertainer or musician dying or getting cancer from second hand smoke, and we did it for years, day after day.But today, smoking isnt allowed, even in a tabacco store.People are hollering they'll get lung cancer(oh my god second hand smoke)well,as you know I am a cancer surviver,2wo straight years of chemo, and more recently,I'am burning one right now(not a twisted one, never have)but I dont have lung cancer, and I've painted for over 30 years and still do without a mask, and still do a lost art,LEAD WORK on kars and dont wear a mask, and thank GOD,my lungs are clean as a whistle.Oh well, just my smokers rights 2wo cents worth.Hey,old age gets us all,but all here have a great heart and soul for those who have passed as our soulful heros,so continue to do what you enjoy and we will all live a long and rockin life together.
PEACE BE WITH YOU,cause they're aint enough to go around.

I have a problem maybe someone could help me with. I'm primarily a bass player but I would also like to sing. I don't have a great voice, but I can sing background and can harmonize which I did do in my younger days. Here's my problem: About 20 years ago, I started getting these coughs that would not go away for months. That pretty much stopped me from singing. After seeing several doctors, the diagnosis is an allergy related asthma. I take an inhaler which allows me to be cough free about 50% of the time. I also run a lot as this seems to help. This is still not good enough to commit singing vocals. Anyone have any remedies? Anything I can do right before a vocal gig?

HEY RALPH: I JUST ASKED BABBITT ABOUT THIS ON ANOTHER THREAD!!!...AN AILMENT...COMMON TO BASSISTS...IS SORE FINGERS...PARTICULARLY THE RIGHT HAND PLUCKING FINGERS...UNTIL YOU DEVELOP THOSE "ALL WEATHER" CALLOUSES...BUT LIKE ANY MUSCLE...YOU MUST USE THEM OR LOSE THEM...AND START ALL OVER WITH THE SORE...BURNING...AND THROBBING FINGERS!!!...ALSO...I WONDER WHAT EFFECT KEYBOARD PLAYING HAD ON EARL VAN DYKE'S CARPEL-TUNNELL SYNDROME...PROBABLY A SIGNIFICANT ONE IN MY OPINION!!!...STUBASS

Yeah Stu. The callus thing always impressed me regarding guitar and bass players. As a keyboard player I wasn't faced with that problem. I was know to,from time to time, leave the stage with a bloody rght hand because I would rip open a few cuticles during the heat of battle. I never really minded because of the attention this incurred from the sympathetic ladies in the crowd. Hell, in those days I would play any card for it's full value.
Regarding Earl. I'm sure Carpel Tunnel had it's effect but most wouldn't know it.

HEY RALPH...I WAS REALLY TALKING ABOUT EARL'S PLAYING BEING THE CAUSE OF HIS CARPEL-TUNNELL...NOT HIS CARPAL-TUNNELL'S EFFECT ON HIS PLAYING!!!...STU

Ralph,
The majority of my suffering both physically and mentally was the result of other players with shitty time that could catch a groove. That'll take it's toll on ya..!
John C,
Try hot herbal ginger tea with approx. 1/2 tsp. of fresh ground ginger well mixed. I have seen it revive a throat from the larengitis stage. Also, I would recommend investigating the level of mold content within your daily surroundings. You would not believe the havok it can reek on your system. Good Luck.
